#123: Fallen: Fire and Redemption - Living is Betrayal

Violet

I slept like a rock. Just blacked out. After so long without truly closing my eyes, it felt like falling into a bottomless pit. Strange, considering how on edge my body still was. The adrenaline was still humming through everything. I stared at the ceiling for a while, listening to Julian's breathing, trying to make sense of what had just happened — and why it hit me so hard.

It still felt like my skin remembered everything on its own. Like it had recorded every touch. As if my body didn’t want to leave that moment. Like reliving it was a physical need. An echo that hadn’t faded, even after sleep.

How could something feel that good?

So... unlike anything else?

Being with Julian knocked me off balance. Scrambled me. And not in a romantic, poetic way. It broke me open. And somehow, that rebuilt me. That thing I always thought was bullshit in romance novels — the whole "connection" talk, the overflowing — it happened. And that’s what scared me. Not the intensity. But the fact that it was real. I felt it. And I don’t know how to handle real.

I fell asleep smiling. Woke up with my face hurting because of it. I can’t even remember the last time that happened. And as dramatic as it sounds, it wasn’t just sex. There was something else in it. Another layer. Like, for a few hours, nothing inside me was broken.

And that’s where the danger lives.

It felt so good, it scared me.

When I opened my eyes again, it was nearly afternoon. He was still there. Sleeping like the world didn’t exist. Slow breathing, his broad back half-covered by the crumpled sheets. I just stared for a while. Reached over and brushed the hair off his forehead. His calmness clashed so violently with the mess inside me.

I got up, still naked, without rush. Walked to the bathroom. Ran a hot bath. Picked whatever smelled nice — some random mix that, surprisingly, worked. I sank into the water like I was trying to scrub the night off my skin. But it was useless. It wasn’t just on my skin. It was in me.

I knew that wasn’t an ending. It was the beginning of something. And that alone made my chest tighten. Because I don’t trust beginnings. I’ve always believed that sooner or later, something breaks. And once it breaks, there’s no fixing it.

But what scared me most was something else.

It was in that water, my fingers wrinkled and the sweet scent rising in the steam, that I thought of Ethan. For the first time in days. And it hit like a punch. I hadn’t gone that long without thinking about him. The guilt slapped me clean across the face.

Grief is weird. It shows up just when you think you're finally learning how to keep going. Then it reminds you that the world wasn’t supposed to continue without that person. That it’s unfair to smile while someone you love is gone. Like living is betrayal.

And now I was that person. The one who keeps going. Who touches another body, smells another scent, builds another life. The kind of person I used to silently judge. And that tore me up. Because I still loved Ethan. But not in the way that froze me anymore.

When I felt the water starting to cool, part of me wished it would just swallow me whole. Just to quiet the noise a little. That’s when I heard two soft knocks at the door.

“Good morning, my love.” Julian’s voice, low and warm, that lazy smile always in his tone. He was wearing just black briefs. Looking at me with something that wasn’t just desire. It was rawer than that. It was care.

“Morning, sleepyhead,” I said back. But my voice came out smaller than I meant.

He noticed right away. Julian always notices. I hated that about him. But maybe it was also what kept me close.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, stepping into the tub without hesitation, dropping the briefs to the floor.

Our bodies touched naturally. He pulled me gently toward him, like he already knew what I needed. And I let myself go, because hiding anything from him felt pointless.

“Do you think it’s wrong for me to move on?” I blurted, unfiltered. And instantly regretted it. It sounded dumb out loud.

“You already know the answer,” he said without missing a beat. Took my foot in his hands and started washing it, slowly, focused. “You don’t deserve to stay stuck. No one does. Life’s already chaos. Doesn’t make sense to bury yourself too.”

I nodded, silent. Maybe that’s why he pulled me even closer.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and started kissing his face, little thank-you kisses. Thank you for not letting me be alone. For being someone I could bleed next to without needing to explain every drop.

“It’s time to shave this beard,” I muttered, feeling his stubble scratch against my skin. It was a little irritating. But I liked it. I liked it even more when he gave me that horrified look he always did whenever I suggested shaving it all off.

He laughed, didn’t answer. Just held me tighter. And there, on his lap, floating in scented water, I felt that weird chill again. That stupid flutter in my stomach. Teenage nerves. A little warning: you’re alive.

The guilt was still there. But lighter. I knew it would pass. Slowly, it would become just a memory. And for the first time, I thought — that’s okay.

I deserve to feel this.

Even if fear still whispers in the background.
