The intersection

Isabella sat at the window's edge, staring into the blackness outside the glass, the night air heavy with anxiety. She gazed at the moon, her breath fogging the window. The silence was broken by a gentle knock on the door. She knew who it was without turning around. Even from the other side of the room, she sensed his presence.

Lucian.

Since he had locked her in her room earlier, he had not returned. Since their previous talk, Isabella's heart had stayed frozen. She was now held captive by something deeper than love. She detested the control he had over her. The disappointment and the rage blazed like a wildfire inside her.

There had once been love between them, and she couldn't ignore the fact that weighed heavily on her chest. Now, though? She was no longer aware of what it was.

It knocked again, more forcefully. Lucian's voice came over the other end, "Isabella." "Open the door."

She remained silent. Between them, there was a dense, oppressive quiet. What would change if she yelled at him and asked him why he continued to treat her like this? He would remain the same even if she cried, screamed, and pleaded for forgiveness. A man who believed that the solution was to control everything, including love.

Her nails dug into the wood as her fingers tightened on the window sill's edge. She had no intention of crying. Not right now. Not for him.

He cried out again, "Isabella," and this time there was a hint of something in his voice. Was there concern? Or was it just a man losing control of something he believed to be his, and his desperation?

She got up and moved slowly in the direction of the door. Before she pulled it open, her palm briefly hovered over the lock.

Lucian stood with an inscrutable expression. His eyes burned with something softer and rage at the same time, and his jaw tightened. She didn't want to acknowledge it to herself since it would only exacerbate the pain.

His voice was low as he said, "I came to talk."

Her chest constricted as she shook her head. "Speak? after all of your actions? What else can be said?

He scowled. "Isabella, you must comprehend..."

She yelled, "I don't have to comprehend anything." You've never paid attention to me, even if you claim I don't listen! Never once have you attempted to see things my way.

His presence was tremendous when he entered the room. Isabella, I tried. However, you— He stopped, looking into her eyes. "You push me away."

Refusing to back down, she swallowed hard. Because you didn't give me an option. Lucian, you made all the choices. I never took part in it. I simply was there.

"That's not true," he muttered hastily as he approached her. "I wanted to keep you safe. I desired to.

"Keep me safe?" She interrupted him with a sour laugh. "Do you think that keeping me in my room is protection? Do you think that regulating my every action is protection?

A glimmer of guilt appeared in his eyes as his expression softened. "I love you, which is why I did it."

She took a step back and slowly shook her head. "No. That isn't love. Ownership is that.

Like a dense fog, the words lingered in the air. She was aware that she had touched him, but he continued to stand there, unsure of what to say.

They looked at one another for a long time without saying anything. It seemed as though neither of them could bridge the gap in silence between them.

At last, Lucian murmured in a hushed tone, "I never wanted this to be the way it is." However, Isabella, you're failing to see the wider picture. There are factors at work here that you are unaware of.

Her face hardened as she crossed her arms. Then let me know. What are you withholding from me?

For a long moment, Lucian paused, his eyes flitting in doubt. Almost too quietly, he stated, "It's not just about us anymore." "I'm trying to shield you from a larger game that's going on."

Isabella felt her heart skip a beat. "What do you mean?"

After pacing for a while and running a hand through his hair, he turned to look at her. "I've been holding you here for a reason. And my emotions aren't the only reason. Something greater than us both poses a threat. Something hazardous.

His words felt like a stone pressing down on Isabella. A feeling of worry crept into her veins, causing her pulse to speed.

"A danger?" She muttered. "What are you discussing?"

Lucian's eyes became gloomy. "I'll go into detail, but not here. Not right now. With a tentative touch, his fingers brushed her arm as he extended his hand. Isabella, I need your trust. I'm taking this action to protect you.

Her heart thumping in her chest, she retreated from his contact. “Trust you?” she said astonishedly. "You said it was for my own good when you locked me up! How can I trust you at this point?

With a wounded voice, Lucian adamantly stated, "I never wanted to hurt you." However, I'll stop at nothing to protect you. even if it implies that you despise me.

The words hurt. Isabella wanted to shout at him to express how deeply he had wounded her. But she was stopped by something in his eyes. Perhaps it was the truth that seeped through the gaps in his armor, or perhaps it was the vulnerability he rarely displayed.

She hardly raised her voice above a whisper. "You believe that keeping me here will protect me? You believe everything would be alright if you just tell me you love me? Lucian, no. Something inside of me has been broken by you. Both of us have been transformed by you.

He simply remained there for a while, as though the force of her words had taken his breath away. Then, in a quiet voice, he spoke again. "I can never lose you, Isabella. Not right now.

Slowly, she shook her head. However, you have already done so.

He didn't dispute. At this moment, he had nothing further to say. Instead, he just stood there and stared at her, his heart divided between the terrible world he had dragged her into and the woman he still loved.

His voice was forceful as he continued, "I'll make it right." "I swear."

Isabella remained silent. She simply walked back to the window and turned aside, gazing into the darkness.

Lucian watched her from the doorway. Inside of him, his heart fought a war. He was aware of her correctness. He was aware that he had caused her irreparable harm. But he couldn't confront the darkness that hung over them both by himself.

He muttered, "Don't go," but Isabella didn't look back. She didn't respond.

Behind him, the door slowly closed.

She continued to stand there for a bit, tracing the shadows outside with her eyes. She had a feeling that this was not the end. Their conflict was only getting started.

Furthermore, she was unaware of how close the secrets he was keeping from her were—secrets that could endanger their relationship.

The window was suddenly knocked on. Isabella jumped and spun around in time to see a figure standing in the moonlight outside. Lucian wasn't the one.

Dante was the one. He waved, a sneer on his lips, and she felt her breath catch in her throat. He said, "Ready to finish what we started?"

Isabella's heart was racing. She wasn't sure whether she should confront him or flee. She was imprisoned, though, that much was certain.
