The Conflict
Isabella's hands at her sides clench into fists. Her pulse is quickening, yet something icy is enveloping her, freezing the portions of her that may have previously been scared.
With a heavy breathing pattern and an angry rhythm of his chest rising and falling, Lucian turns his back on her. His voice is low and full of annoyance. "You think this is easy for me, Isabella?"
With defiance in her gaze, she raises her chin. "No, I think it's easy for you to think you're in control of everything."
His eyes are ferocious as he turns back to her. You believe you understand what it's like? To lose everything that you have? To have someone betray you—" With a flash of something nearly painful over his face, he interrupts. Beneath the surface, his rage simmers and boils.
She assertively asserts, "I didn't betray you," moving in closer. "You did that yourself." Lucian, you imprisoned me and kept me captive in your universe. I attempted to preserve myself, not to betray you."
His fists are clasped at his sides as he looks at her. "And now, who's going to save you? Isabella, what happens if you flee once more? Do you believe that the world will treat you with kindness?
Sharply, she responds, "I don't need kindness, Lucian," her voice piercing the tension. "I need freedom."
A sour smirk curls his lips. "Freedom? It will never be yours. I don't want you in my universe."
Isabella laughs, but it's sour and hollow. "Your world? You're referring to your jail.
Lucian steps forward, his eyes hard and dark. "And you believe that freedom will be found there? Only the same chains—possibly worse ones—will be present. For a little while, his voice becomes gentle, almost tender. "Isabella, I don’t want to see you hurt."
She can't conceal the pain that makes her eyes flutter. "You didn't give a damn about my suffering. just about possessing me."
"That’s not true," he yells, advancing one more step while searching her face with his gaze, seemingly pleading with her to see the truth in what he is saying.
Her eyes are raw when she looks at him. "Lucian, you can't control me. You no longer have that privilege.
There is an agonizing silence in the room, and neither of them wants to turn away.
The silence is finally broken by Lucian, who speaks softly. "You're free to go, Isabella. But be aware that there will be repercussions. "There are always."
She doesn't flinch even if her chest gets tighter. "I'll confront them. I always have.
The Destiny of Alessia
With her back straight and an unreadable look, Alessia stands. She senses the oppressive weight of her brother's rage in the air.
Lucian's anger is growing every second, and his hands are trembling at his sides. "You were aware. You were always aware of her significance to me.
Alessia confesses, "I knew," in a steady voice despite the stress. "But I also know that you’re losing yourself, Lucian."
His eyes light up with rage as he flips on her. "I'm taking care of my obligations. This family is staying together because of me."
"No," she responds icily, her tone piercing his rage like a blade. "You're destroying it. You've lost sight of the important things.
Emotion heaving in his chest, Lucian takes a step toward her. "You think you know better than me?"
She whispers, "I know you," her eyes briefly softening. Furthermore, I am aware that none of this is you. Not the man I knew before."
With a flare of frustration in his eyes, Lucian takes a step back. "This is what I'm doing for you. For everyone."
Alessia gives a headshake. "You're controlling yourself by doing this. You believe you will succeed if you put her in jail. However, Lucian, you're not winning anything. Simply put, you're losing more.
His hands clench into fists as he grits his teeth. "You're correct. I've lost. I've lost everything.
Alessia says, "Then maybe it’s time to let her go," in a tone that is full of finality. "Before you lose yourself completely."
Lucian's expression hardens. "She stays."
Alessia takes a step forward, her voice becoming more passionate and gentler. "And Lucian, what if she passes away as a result of your fixation with keeping her here? Then, will it be worthwhile?
For a brief minute, the weight of her remarks appears to loom over them both as the room is filled with quiet.
Lucian clenches his jaw and turns away. "I refuse to let her perish. I won't let her go."
With a mixture of grief and sympathy in her gaze, Alessia observes him. "But you already have."
A Quiet Conflict
With a finality that reverberates in the quiet, Lucian locks Isabella's room door and it smashes shut behind him. For a minute, he leans against the door and stands there, breathing in irregular, short gasps. He feels his heart thumping in his chest.
Isabella is seated with her back to him near the window. She has spent hours acting in this manner. silent, far away, and inaccessible.
He approaches her cautiously, as though he's scared to disturb the delicate silence that envelops her.
"Why do you make this so hard?" He whispers, his tone containing annoyance as well as something more profound.
Isabella remains silent. Like she's searching for anything outside of this room that will provide her with the answers she needs, she simply looks out the window with an unfocused glance.
Lucian's heart is pounding. He whispers, "Why don't you hate me?" "Why don’t you look at me the way you used to?"
Her eyes, tired and red-rimmed but still sharp, shift her head slightly. "Because hate doesn't make things better. It only exacerbates the situation.
With each inch he closes, Lucian's heart beats more quickly. "So, Isabella, what will make this better? What can I do for you?
Her expression is unreadable when she glances at him. "You must stop treating me as though I can be fixed by you. You must give up having complete control over my life.
His throat tightens every breath. His voice is tense as he says, "I'm not trying to control you."
She says, "But you are," and the words pierce him like a knife.
He is at a loss for words. Rather, he observes her silently while feeling as though something is shattering inside of him.
Her voice is hardly more than a whisper when she replies, "I loved you, Lucian," yet the words have a greater impact on him than anything else. "But love isn’t enough when you can’t trust the person you’re with."
When he says, "I never wanted you to lose trust in me," his voice breaks for the first time. "But I don’t know how to fix this." How am I going to do this?
There is a brief glimpse of something…softness, remorse, longing…in her eyes as she looks at him, but it stop before he can understand it.
"Maybe we were never meant to fix this," she murmurs.
Lucian takes a step closer and reaches for her, his hand shaking. The distance between them feels like miles as she pulls away.
He says, "I'm sorry, please forgive me " in an emotionally charged voice.
"I never wanted to hurt you." Softly, "But you did," she responds. "And now we’re both lost."
