Chapter 17 RESCUE PARTY
Chapter 17 RESCUE PARTY
Seven days. It’s been seven days of cold, damp darkness, punctuated only by the hollow sound of dripping water and the desperate churning of my stomach. This room is a windowless cage in a vast, abandoned structure, I can smell the salt and rust of the docks. I haven't been fed properly; only meager crackers and water, just enough to keep me from fainting. The baby is a restless, heavy weight inside me, kicking with an urgency that matches my terror.
I should have talked to him. The thought is a brutal whip across my conscience. I let panic and pride rule me. I ran from Killian when he was trying to save me from an invisible enemy. I threw his genuine protection back in his face because of the sins of his dead father. Hysterical. I still hate that word, but maybe, just maybe, I was.
The heavy steel door scrapes open, shattering the silence. A sickly yellow light spills in, and a shadow fills the doorway.
"Look at you, Annabella," a voice drawls, one that sounds vaguely familiar, laced with a smug, self-satisfied cruelty. "The grand Astor Princess, looking like a drowned rat."
I squint against the sudden light, trying to place the face. He steps closer, a tall, thin man in a worn coat. The light hits him, and recognition slams into me with the force of a wrecking ball.
"Mr. Thorne?" My voice is weak, rasping. Richard Thorne. He was a minor executive who tried to challenge Killian’s leadership years ago and was quietly and ruthlessly destroyed.
Thorne smiles, a chilling expression that doesn't reach his cold eyes. "Finally, the recognition I deserve. 'Mr. Thorne.' You make it sound so polite, but I assure you, Annabella, there is nothing polite about this moment."
"Why, Richard? What do you want?" I try to push myself up against the damp wall, fear giving me a sudden surge of adrenaline.
"What do I want? I want Killian Astor to feel the same crushing despair he inflicted on me! He took my career, my reputation, my family's future. He left me with nothing but debt and a burning desire for justice." Thorne paces, gesticulating wildly. "And the beautiful symmetry? I use his father's sins, the murder of your worthless father, to lure him here, so I can take everything he cares about in one beautiful, fiery explosion."
My breath hitches. "An explosion? You have a bomb?"
"Oh, yes. A spectacular one," he says, chuckling, his voice vibrating with mania. "It's hidden right under the floorboards. The whole pier goes up. Killian, his prized file, the Astor name, the Astor heir, and of course, me. A grand finale for the history books."
I start sobbing, the tears mixing with the week-long dirt on my face. "Please, Richard, don't do this. I'm pregnant. You don't want a child's blood on your hands."
"A child I care nothing for! It is Astor blood, Annabella! It’s the next generation of the disease that destroyed me!" He stops, bending down to look me in the eye. "But you, my dear, you have a purpose. You’re the bait. You’re the reason he’ll walk right into the blast zone."
"I love him!" I cry out, the truth tearing its way out of my throat. "I love him, Richard! And Luciano! They're both coming! You can't kill them! Please, I beg you!"
Thorne laughs, a harsh, grating sound. "Luciano? Oh, that weak shadow. He doesn't stand a chance. And Killian? He'll be here soon. I sent him the address. He thinks he can outsmart me, the arrogant fool. But I have the perfect position, and the perfect weapon."
Just then, a low, echoing sound reaches us, a distant car engine, then silence. Thorne smiles, pulling a small, heavy pistol from his coat.
"Showtime," he whispers, moving to a small slit of a window. "Ah, there he is. Alone, like a good boy."
He watches for a tense moment, then stiffens. "Wait... there's a second one. Luciano. That bastard is always complicating things." Thorne raises the gun, aiming it at the door. "Doesn't matter. Two funerals are better than one."
The outer door creaks open. I hear Killian’s voice, sharp and commanding, cutting through the vast space.
"Thorne! I have the file! Let her go, and we can talk!"
Thorne shouts back, his voice echoing. "Drop the file and step into the light, Astor! I want to see your desperation!"
The massive figure of Killian steps into the broken light of the warehouse floor. He's covered in grime, his suit ripped, but his eyes, when they scan the darkness and lock onto mine, are molten gold, a pure concentration of fierce love and lethal intent.
"Annabella!" he roars, his voice breaking with relief and rage. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Killian! He has a bomb!" I sob, trying to warn him.
"Silence her!" Thorne snarls, pressing the muzzle of the gun against my temple.
"Don't you dare touch her, Thorne!" Killian takes a step forward. He throws the manila file onto the ground, where it slides across the concrete. "The file is yours! The truth is yours! Let her walk out, and I stay. I'm the one you want!"
"Oh, I want you, Astor," Thorne cackles. "But I want the satisfaction of watching you lose her more! It’s about balance! You took my future; I take your heir!"
A shadow detaches itself from the far wall. Luciano emerges, his own weapon drawn, but he's too far.
"Richard, think this through!" Luciano calls out calmly. "You won't escape. There are police surrounding this area! You take the file, you walk out alive!"
"Lies! All lies!" Thorne screams, his finger tightening on the trigger pointed at my head. "The only way out is a memory! A flash of light!"
Killian lunges. He doesn't hesitate, doesn't even flinch. He covers the distance between us in two powerful strides. "She is untouchable!" he bellows, throwing his body over mine.
The gunshot is deafening. The impact is sickening, a wet, dull thud right where Killian's shoulder meets his chest. He gasps, his body going rigid over mine, sheltering me.
Thorne, shocked that his target moved, pivots the gun. "You idiot! You signed your death warrant!"
But before Thorne can fire again, three rapid, precise shots ring out from the darkness. Luciano. Thorne stumbles, collapsing with a grunt, the gun clattering uselessly away from his dead hand.
"Killian! No!" I scream, pushing him back. His white shirt is instantly soaked in a dark, rapidly expanding crimson stain. He winces, his eyes glazed with pain, but he forces a faint, relieved smile.
"You're safe," he whispers, his breath ragged.
"The bomb! It's under the floor!" I scream.
Luciano rushes towards us, his face pale with horror. He kicks Thorne's body and frantically scans the floor. "Annabella, you have to move! The timer! Where is it?"
I point toward the corner. "He said it was under the boards!"
Luciano pulls a tactical knife and rips up the planks near Thorne’s body. He finds a simple metal box. A red digital clock blinks: 02:15.
"We don't have time to disarm it! We move! Now!" Luciano shouts, his face grim. He holsters his weapon and lifts Killian, struggling under his dead weight. "Annabella, help me get him out!"
I try to move, to help, but a searing, agonizing pain rips through my lower back and abdomen, sharp and unfamiliar. I gasp, clutching my swollen belly.
"Annabella? What is it?" Killian whispers, trying to turn his head to look at me, his eyes clouded with pain.
"I… I can't," I choke out, gripping the side of a rusty support beam. Another wave of pain slams into me, stronger this time. "Luciano! I think… I think the baby is coming!"
Luciano freezes, Killian's arm thrown over his shoulder. He looks from the ticking clock (01:30) to my terrified face, then down at the spreading pool of water near my feet.
"Oh, God," Luciano mutters, forcing Killian forward. "We have to move faster! You're in labor, Annabella! Move!"
Killian struggles to stay conscious. "The… the car," he manages. "Get her to the car. Luciano, get her out!"
I cry out as a third, fierce contraction hits. Luciano pushes Killian out the door, then turns back for me.
"Hold on, Annabella! You have to hold on! I'll carry you!" Luciano scoops me up in his arms, his strong grip somehow comforting despite the chaos.
He bursts through the outer door just as the timer hits 00:45. The police perimeter, alerted by the gunfire, breaks formation. Headlights and sirens flood the dockyard. Medics, already staged, sprint toward us.
"Medic! We have a GSW! We have a woman in active labor!" Luciano shouts, laying Killian gently on the cracked asphalt.
I’m on the ground, the cold, wet air shocking my system. I don't care about the police, the flashing lights, or the screaming sirens. I can only focus on Killian, his face graying, and the unbearable pain of labor.
"Killian! Stay with me! Please! I love you!" I scream, reaching for his hand.
He squeezes my hand weakly, his eyes fixed on mine. "I… I love you too, Annabella. My love. You... you were never hysterical."
A colossal explosion rips through the air, shaking the ground beneath us. The Old Astor Shipyard, Pier 7, is consumed in a massive fireball that lights up the dawn. The shockwave rattles the remaining windows, but we are clear. We are alive.
A medic rushes to Killian, while another kneels beside me. I clutch the medic's arm, my focus entirely on the man who took a bullet for me.
"He's going to be fine, ma'am. He's stable," the medic assures me, but my next contraction cuts off any relief.
I throw my head back and scream, the sound lost in the renewed frenzy of sirens and shouting. Killian is being loaded onto a stretcher. I watch him go, tears of anguish, relief, and pure, raw pain mixing on my face.
"Killian!" I scream, reaching out.
Luciano grabs my hand, his face etched with worry. "I'm here, Annabella. I'm here. We're getting you both to the hospital now. It's time."
The last thing I register is the sound of the ambulance siren wailing, carrying us away from the wreckage and toward the terrifying, unpredictable moment of birth.
