The First Hybrid

The First Hybrid

Elara's POV
The air crackled with power as I threw myself between the werewolves and the two hybrids. My hands glowed with blue fire that cast strange shadows across the square.
"Back away from them," I warned Thorne, my words echoing with magic.
Thorne's golden eyes widened. "The first hybrid," he whispered. "You've returned."
Behind me, I could feel the girl—Kira—staring at my back. She was the one Raven had raised. The one they were all looking for.
"Elara?" Kira's voice shook.
I didn't turn around. I couldn't afford to take my eyes off Thorne and his dogs. "Don't worry. I'm getting you both out of here."
The Creator—Raven—took a step closer, her star-filled eyes locked on me. "Well, well. My first victory returns to the fold. Have you come to help me finish what we started, Elara?"
"I never started anything with you," I spat. "You stole my blood and used it for your experiments."
Raven's smile was too wide, filled with teeth that sparkled like tiny diamonds. "And such wonderful trials they were. Look how you've all grown."
I raised my hands higher, blue flames getting brighter. "Nova, Kira, when I say run, head for the nearest shadow."
"How adorable," Raven laughed. "You think you can escape me? I made you, Elara. I know everything about you."
"Not everything," I whispered.
With a quick movement, I slammed my hands to the ground. Blue fire sped across the plaza in all directions. The werewolves jumped back, growling. Raven didn't move, but her smile faded as the flames reached her feet and split, circling around her.
"NOW!" I shouted.
I spun around, grabbing both Kira and Nova by their arms. We ran toward the closest shadow—a dark space between two buildings.
"This way!" Nova called, pulling us toward what looked like a solid wall.
But as we reached it, the wall rippled like water. We plunged through.
Cold darkness pressed against my skin for a moment before we fell out onto a wooden floor. We were in a dusty room with closed windows. The old clock tower.
"What was that?" Kira gasped, struggling to her feet. "How did we get here?"
"Shadow walking," Nova explained, brushing dust from her small form. "One of Elara's talents."
Kira turned to look at me properly for the first time. I saw myself mirrored in her eyes—tall, with midnight-black hair and eyes that glowed with an inner light. My skin was marked with faint silver lines that made patterns like constellations.
"You're the first hybrid," she said slowly. "The one Thorne mentioned."
I nodded. "I am. Though I didn't know there were others until recently."
"There are five of us now," Nova said. "Six, counting me."
"Six?" I frowned. "But the prophecy spoke of five."
Nova looked uncomfortable. "Things have changed. The Creator changed her plans."
Kira stepped between us. "I don't understand any of this. Raven raised me. She took care of me. How can she be The Creator? How can she be evil?"
I sighed, feeling the weight of truth on my shoulders. "She's not bad, exactly. Just... not human. Not anymore. And she has plans for all of us that we wouldn't agree to if we knew what they were."
"Which is what?" Kira demanded.
Before I could answer, heavy footsteps sounded on the stairs. I pushed Kira behind me and raised my hands, blue fire flickering at my fingers.
The door burst open. Kai and two other hybrids I didn't recognize rushed in.
"You made it!" Kai shouted, relief clear on his face. "We thought The Creator might have caught you."
"She nearly did," Nova said. "Thorne's werewolves intercepted us."
One of the other hybrids—a boy with scales along his arms—hissed. "Werewolves are the worst. Almost as bad as the Void Hunters."
"They're not our enemies right now," I said strongly. "We need to focus on The Creator and the Convergence."
I walked to the tower window and peered through a crack in the boards. From here, we could just make out the center plaza and the countdown clock on the statue.
"Two days," I said quietly. "We have two days to stop this."
Kira joined me at the window. "Stop what exactly? What is the Convergence?"
I turned to face the gathered mutants. They were so young, even Nova with her old eyes. None of them asked for this.
"The Convergence is when the five magical factions of Ravenshadow City are meant to unite," I explained. "It happens once every hundred years. The statue counts down to the moment when the barriers between areas weaken."
"That sounds... good?" Kira said uncertainly.
"It should be," I agreed. "But The Creator plans to use us—use our hybrid blood—to break the barriers totally. She wants to merge the groups into one power that she can control."
"And that's bad because...?" asked the scaled boy.
"Because it would kill thousands," Nova answered. "The magical reaction would destroy most of Ravenshadow City. Only those The Creator chooses would live."
"She can't do that," Kira argued. "Raven cares about people. She used to heal sick children!"
I put a hand on her shoulder. "The Raven you knew was a mask. The Creator has worn many faces over the ages. She finds people with potential—like us—and shapes them for her goals."
Kira shook off my hand. "You're wrong. There has to be another reason."
"There isn't," I said gently. "I know because I was her first. Twenty years ago, she found me—a baby abandoned at the edge of the Whispering Grove. I had natural magic, and she... enhanced it with blood from the other groups."
"Why would she do that?" Kira asked.
"To create the perfect key," Nova said. "A living key that could unlock the barriers between worlds."
Thunder roared outside, though the sky had been clear moments before. The air grew heavy with electricity.
"She's looking for us," I warned. "We need to move to the safe house."
"I thought this was the safe house," Kai said.
"No," I answered, moving toward a dusty mirror on the wall. "This is just the entrance."
I put my hand on the mirror's surface. Instead of hitting glass, my fingers sank through, causing ripples. The mirror's surface turned shiny.
"Everyone through," I ordered. "Quickly."
One by one, the hybrids stepped into the glass. Kira paused.
"Why should I trust you?" she asked. "I just met you."
"Because we're the same," I said simply. "Created by the same person, for the same reason. The difference is, I'm choosing my own way. You can too."
Kira stared at me for a long moment, then nodded once. She stepped through the mirror.
I was about to follow when the tower shook. Dust and debris rained from the roof. A terrible roar sounded outside—something huge and angry.
Through the cracked boards, I saw a monster rising above the buildings. It had Raven's face, but stretched and twisted, her body now a writhing mass of shadows and stars.
"Found you," her voice boomed across the city.
I dove for the mirror just as the tower walls began to fall. The silver surface swirled around me as I fell through— And landed in my safe house in the neutral zone. The other hybrids were there, looking around in wonder at the small apartment filled with books and magical objects.
"What was that noise?" Kira asked, helping me to my feet.
Before I could answer, the mirror behind me cracked from edge to edge. A starry hand pushed through the broken surface.
"Did you really think a simple mirror ward could keep me out, my dear Elara?" The Creator's words slithered through the cracks. "I made you. Everything you can do, I taught you."
"Run!" I yelled to the others. "The back door! NOW!"
As the hybrids scrambled for the escape, The Creator's face appeared in the shattered mirror—beautiful and terrible, human and alien all at once.
"They can run," she said softly. "But you know the truth, don't you, Elara? The Convergence cannot be stopped. And when it comes..."
She smiled her star-filled smile.
"Every
single hybrid will fulfill their purpose—whether they choose to or not."
