The Missing Pieces
The Missing Pieces
Kira's POV
"Get down!" Elara shouted, tackling me to the floor as a beam of starlight shot through the cracked mirror. It hit the wall where my head had been seconds ago, leaving a smoking hole.
I rolled away as another beam hit near my feet. Nova dove behind a cabinet while the other hybrids scattered. The Creator's laughter rang from the broken mirror, each sound like tiny bells made of ice.
"We need to seal it!" Elara yelled, her hands glowing blue. She pressed them against the floor, and silvery lines raced across the room toward the mirror.
A tall boy with flame-red hair raised his hands too. Fire and ice shot from his fingers, meeting Elara's magic. Together, they formed a barrier that covered the mirror like frost on a window.
The Creator's face twisted behind the magical ice. "Tick-tock, my children. Two days until you all come home to me." The mirror frosted over fully, silencing her voice.
My heart pounded in my chest as I got to my feet. "That was close."
"Too close," Elara agreed, looking tired. "She's getting stronger. The Convergence is giving her power."
The red-haired boy helped Nova up. "Is everyone okay?"
I looked around the room at the small group of people—people like me. Hybrids. The word still felt strange in my mind.
"Kira, Nova," Elara said, "meet the others. This is Kai."
The red-haired boy nodded. His eyes changed color as I watched—from green to gold to deep red. "Second mix. I'm part werewolf, part vampire, with some natural magic thrown in."
A girl stepped forward. She had dark skin and hair that seemed to shift between black and deep purple. "I'm Maya. Fourth hybrid. Witch, fae, and hybrid blood." As if to prove it, her fingers briefly changed into bird-like talons before returning to normal.
The last was a boy who looked about my age. He stood slightly apart from the others, his pale face serious. "Dominic. Fifth mix. Vampire, monster, and human."
I swallowed hard. "I'm Kira. Third mix, I guess? I don't even know what I am."
"Werewolf, witch, and fae," Nova provided. "With a dash of something else even I don't recognize."
"And you?" I asked Nova.
She smiled, looking both ancient and childish. "I'm the seventh. The last. I'm... complicated."
Elara moved to a table covered with maps and old books. "That's six of us. But we're still missing Lyra—the sixth mix."
"Where is she?" I asked.
Elara's face darkened. "We believe the Harbingers took her."
"Harbingers?" The word sent a chill down my spine.
"The Creator's enemies," Kai stated. "But that doesn't make them our friends. They want to stop the Convergence by killing all of us."
"Great," I grumbled. "So we have The Creator who wants to use us, and the Harbingers who want to kill us. Any good news?"
Maya smiled slightly. "Well, you found us. That's something."
I looked at Elara. "How did you find everyone?"
"I've been searching for years," she replied. "After I fled The Creator, I knew she would make more hybrids. Each of us has a unique special signature that I can track."
"Like a fingerprint?" I asked.
Elara nodded. "Exactly. I found Kai first, five years ago. He was living with a werewolf pack that didn't know what he really was. Then Maya, hiding in the Whispering Grove. Dominic was the hardest—he was living in the vampire area under Sebastian Devereux's protection."
"And me? Did you know about me?" I couldn't keep the hurt from my voice. If she'd known all along and left me with Raven...
"I felt your presence," Elara said softly. "But Raven—The Creator—had you hidden behind strong wards. I couldn't find you until recently, when your skills started to awaken."
"What about Lyra?" I asked.
"She was helping us," Dominic spoke up, his voice quiet but fierce. "She had joined the Harbingers to learn their plans. Then three days ago, she stopped speaking."
"We need to find her," Elara said strongly. "We need all seven hybrids to have any chance of stopping The Creator."
Nova pulled something from her pocket—a small rock that pulsed with purple light. "I can still feel Lyra. She's living, but her signal is weak."
Elara stood taller. "Then we have our mission. Find Lyra, free her from the Harbingers, and then figure out how to stop the Convergence."
"And how exactly do we do that?" I asked. "The Convergence is in two days."
"Each of us has powers The Creator built into us," Kai stated. "Powers meant to break down the barriers between the five districts during the Convergence."
Maya nodded. "But we can use those same powers to strengthen the barriers instead."
"If we're together," Dominic added.
I looked at each of them. "So what can everyone do? Besides being a weird magical mix."
Kai grinned, holding up his hand. Fire danced across his hand, then turned to ice, then lightning. "I control elements. All of them."
Maya's form blurred slightly. "I can change shape and see through lies. Nothing can hide from me."
"I can walk between worlds," Dominic said. "Slip through shadows from one place to another."
I turned to Elara. "And you?"
"I heal," she said simply. "And I can take away skills temporarily. It's how I've stayed hidden from The Creator for so long."
"What about me?" I asked. "What can I do?"
The room grew quiet. Everyone looked at me strangely.
"You don't know?" Elara asked.
I shook my head. "Raven—The Creator—never told me anything. My ring would glow sometimes, and I could do things with ice, but that's it."
Elara and Nova shared a look.
"What?" I asked. "What aren't you telling me?"
Elara took a deep breath. "Kira, you're the key. The most important piece. The Creator made you specifically to control the others."
My stomach dropped. "What does that mean?"
"It means," Nova said gently, "that you can increase or negate our powers. You're the lynchpin. Without you, the other hybrids are just powerful people. With you, we become something else entirely."
"A weapon," Dominic said simply.
"Or a shield," Elara replied. "It depends on how you use your power."
My head spun. All those years, Raven had raised me, taught me, loved me—all to turn me into some kind of magical controller? A master key for her plans?
Before I could process this, Nova's crystal flashed bright purple.
"It's Lyra!" she gasped. "She's reaching out!"
The crystal displayed a flickering image—a girl with silver hair and eyes like stormy skies. Blood dripped from a cut on her forehead.
"Elara," the picture whispered. "They know... about Kira. The seventh seal... is breaking. Don't—" Her voice cut off as the picture flickered.
"Where are you?" Elara asked.
"Old... stage... underground. Hurry. He's coming... He knows what Kira really is..." The picture faded.
"We have to go now," Elara said, grabbing a bag and stuffing it with strange items. "Nova, can you track her?"
Nova nodded, holding the crystal. "Barely, but yes."
"Wait," I said, fear making my voice shake. "What did she mean? What am I really?"
Elara looked at me, her eyes full of worry and something else—something like fear.
"The Creator didn't just make you to control our powers, Kira," she said slowly. "She made you as a vessel."
"A vessel for what?" I asked, though part of me didn't want to know.
Elara's voice dropped to a whisper. "For herself. You're not just the third mix. You're her new body. When the Convergence happens, she plans to take over your form permanently."
The room spun around me. I grabbed the edge of the table to steady myself.
"No," I whispered. "She wouldn't—"
A huge crash shook the building. Dust rained from the roof.
"They found us," Dominic hissed, moving to the window.
Outside, shadow animals prowled the street. Among them walked a figure I recognized—Sebastian Devereux, head of the Midnight Syndicate vampires. But his eyes glowed with starlight.
"The Creator can possess people," Elara explained grimly. "Temporarily, at least. Until she has you."
Nova grabbed my hand. "We need to go. Now."
As we rushed toward the back door, I couldn't help looking back at the window. Sebastian—or The Creator inside him—looked up directly at me. Those star-filled eyes met mine, and his mouth made words I could somehow hear inside my head: "Run all you want, my vessel. In the end, you will come home to me."
