Chapter 46

Chapter 46
The forest was quiet in the early morning, dew glistening on the leaves. Clara stood with Rowan at the edge of the trees, the boundary between her two worlds. The pack had tasks to attend to, rogue threats to monitor, and Rowan’s responsibilities as alpha kept him here.

“You don’t have to stay,” Clara said softly, her hand brushing against his. “I can manage things in town for a while.”

Rowan’s hazel eyes darkened, intent and possessive. “I know you can handle your shop. I know you can handle yourself… but leaving you is harder than I expected.”

Clara’s chest tightened. “I’ll be fine,” she whispered, leaning into him, wanting the warmth and strength she always found in his presence.

He cupped her face, thumb brushing her cheek. “You’re mine, Clara. And even when you’re in town, I’ll be thinking about you. Watching over you… in my way.”

She smiled, heart racing at the words. “And I’ll be thinking about you,” she admitted, voice soft. “Every day.”

Rowan’s hand lingered in hers, and for a moment, neither of them moved. The air between them was thick with desire, longing, and unspoken promises. He leaned down, brushing a lingering kiss over her lips, slow and deliberate. “I’ll be back before you know it,” he murmured, voice husky. “And when I return… we’ll finish what we started.”

Clara swallowed, heat pooling in her stomach. “I’ll hold you to that,” she whispered, fingers tangling in his.

Reluctantly, they broke apart. Rowan’s protective gaze lingered on her as she stepped toward the path leading back to town. Each step felt heavier without him at her side, but also filled with anticipation, excitement, and the knowledge that their bond had grown stronger through every fight, every kiss, every moment together.

Back in town, Clara returned to the coffee shop, the familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee and pastries surrounding her. She moved through her routine efficiently, yet her mind kept wandering back to Rowan—his touch, his gaze, the way he made her feel both protected and alive.

Elias stopped by, as he often did, smiling at her. “You’re holding up,” he remarked, leaning against the counter. “Rowan didn’t come with you?”

Clara shook her head. “No… he had to stay behind. Pack duties, threats, all that.” Her chest tightened at the thought of him in danger without her there.

Elias nodded knowingly. “He worries about you too, you know. Even when he’s not here, he’s thinking of your safety.”

Clara smiled softly, comforted. “I know. I feel it.”

As she served customers, her mind kept drifting back to the forest, to Rowan’s intensity and the heat of his kisses. The distance made the longing sharper, the anticipation of seeing him again almost unbearable. And yet, she knew—no matter where she was, no matter the danger—she and Rowan were tethered together, hearts and instincts intertwined.

That night, as Clara closed the shop, she pressed her hand to her chest, imagining his hand on hers, his lips brushing hers, the warmth of his body beside hers. “Come back soon,” she whispered to the stars, hope and desire mingling in her voice.

And somewhere in the forest, Rowan felt it too—her longing, her presence, even from miles away. His wolf stirred, restless and protective, aching to be near her, to claim her fully.

Distance could not break them. Danger could not sever the bond. Desire, trust, and love tethered them together—stronger than ever.
