Chapter 45 The Aftercare
Chapter 45 The Aftercare
The morning after the full moon ritual dawned soft and golden over the lakeside estate, but the grand master bedroom remained a sanctuary of quietude, bathed in the diffused warmth of the rising sun. The air was thick with the remnants of the night, the scent of sex, blood, incense, and sweat mingling with the fresh morning breeze that whispered through the tall, partly open windows.
The massive bed at the room's center was a tableau of spent passion: black silk sheets stained and rumpled, bearing the evidence of the intense ritual that had bound the four crowns and their queen completely. Scattered candles had burned down to stubs, their wax pooled on silver holders. A wine glass lay overturned on the nightstand, a dark stain spreading across the wood. Torn fabric from discarded clothing littered the floor, and the silken ropes that had bound her lay discarded like shed skin.
Selene lay in the center of it all, her body a canvas of their devotion. Deep bite marks adorned her neck, breasts, and inner thighs, some merely bruised, others broken skin that had crusted over. Bruises shaped as possessive hands bloomed on her hips and waist, on her upper arms, along her ribs. Trails of dried cum clung to her skin in places, marking where each man had claimed her. Her silver-streaked hair was a messy, damp tangle spread across the pillow. Her silver eyes fluttered open, taking in the room with a gaze that was equal parts exhaustion and lingering pleasure. Every muscle ached, but it was a satisfying ache, a testament to the completeness of their claiming. She could feel dried sweat on her skin, its texture pulling slightly when she moved. The bite marks throbbed with her heartbeat, a dull, insistent reminder of the night.
The four kings surrounded her, their bodies bearing similar marks from the night, scratches on their backs, bite marks on their shoulders, shadows of exhaustion in their eyes. Yet, none of them withdrew. They remained close, a protective and devoted barrier between her and the world beyond the bed.
Enzo was the first to stir, his dark eyes softening as he took in Selene's form. He moved slowly, carefully gathering her into his arms and cradling her against his chest. His large hand stroked her back with a tenderness that belied his powerful frame, tracing the curve of her spine as if memorizing it.
"You were incredible last night," he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "You took all of us. You held us together. I love you, Selene. More than I ever thought I could love anyone." His eyes flicked to the bruise on her hip, the one shaped like his fingers, and he bent to press a soft kiss to it. "You are our heart, our center. Last night was... everything. When I watched you with Kael, then Damien, then Rafe... I felt no jealousy. Only grateful that you wanted us all."
Selene nuzzled into his neck, inhaling his scent, gunpowder, cologne, and the faint metallic trace of blood. "I love you too," she murmured. "Even when it hurts. Even when it terrifies me."
Kael shifted closer from behind, his warm body pressing against her back. His hand slid over her hip, gentle and protective. "You are my sister and my Luna," he said softly, his lips brushing her shoulder. "Last night... I felt something I never thought I'd feel. Peace. With all of them. With you. I love you, Selene. More than blood. More than a pack." He looked at Enzo, a nod of acknowledgment passing between them. "We are yours. All of us. When I entered you and felt Enzo still inside you... It should have felt wrong. But it felt right. Complete."
Damien knelt beside the bed, his cool fingers brushing her cheek. His eyes, ancient and filled with a love that spanned centuries, met hers. "You gave me light after centuries of darkness," he whispered. "I have never loved anyone the way I love you. You are my queen. My reason. My forever." He glanced at Kael and Enzo, a silent communication passing among the three, a recognition of their shared devotion. "Last night, when I fed from you while Rafe took you... the taste of your pleasure mixed with your blood... I have no words for what that meant to me."
Rafe, usually a whirlwind of chaos, was uncharacteristically quiet. He curled at her feet, his shadows gently wrapping around her ankles like a caress. His voice was rough with rare vulnerability as he spoke. "You make the chaos worth staying for," he said. "I love you, beautiful. I'd burn the world for you... But I'd rather build one with you." His eyes met Damien's, and there was a moment of understanding, a silent pact between the vampire and the shadow-weaver. "I've never wanted to stay anywhere. But here... with you... I want to stay forever."
The aftercare began slowly, tenderly, with no urgency at all.
Enzo didn't rush. He sat up in bed and looked at her for a long moment, his dark eyes tracing every mark on her body with something like reverence and regret mingled together. Then he leaned down and pressed the softest kiss to the bruise on her hip, the one shaped like his fingers.
"Stay still," he murmured, and his voice was different now, not the commanding Alpha, but something gentler. "Let me take care of you."
He gathered her into his arms with infinite care, cradling her against his chest like she weighed nothing and everything at once. She could feel his heartbeat against her cheek, steady and strong. He carried her through the suite, past the wreckage of the ritual, and into the marble bathroom.
The bath was already drawn, steam rising in lazy curls. Someone had prepared it: lavender and eucalyptus oils scenting the water, rose petals floating on the surface. The water was perfect, hot enough to soothe but not scald.
Enzo lowered her in slowly, inch by inch, watching her face for any sign of discomfort. The heat enveloped her sore muscles, and she couldn't help the moan that escaped her lips.
"Too hot?" he asked immediately.
"No," she whispered. "Perfect."
He knelt beside the tub, rolling up his sleeves, and began to wash her with methodical tenderness. He started with her hands, massaging each finger, working the soap into her palms. Then her arms, her shoulders, working the tension from muscles she hadn't realized were knotted tight. When he reached her breasts, he was gentle, washing away dried sweat and semen with careful strokes, pressing soft kisses to each bite mark.
"I'm sorry," he whispered against the dark bruise on her neck. "I was too rough."
"You weren't," she said, tilting her head to give him better access. "I wanted it. I wanted all of it."
He made a low sound in his throat and continued down her body, her stomach, her hips, between her legs. He was thorough but gentle, checking her for any real damage, any tears or abrasions that needed attention. When he was satisfied, he lifted her legs one at a time, massaging her calves, her feet, working out the soreness from hours of being claimed.
Kael appeared in the doorway, silent as always, carrying a tray. He set it down: warm towels, a hairbrush, oils. Then he moved to the other side of the tub and sank to his knees beside his brother.
"Let me," he said softly.
Enzo nodded and shifted, letting Kael take over.
Kael's hands were different, warmer, slightly rougher from years of training and combat. He started with her hair, working shampoo through the tangled silver strands with patient fingers. He massaged her scalp in slow circles, and she felt herself melting into the sensation, her eyes drifting shut.
"You carried so much last night," Kael murmured, his voice low and intimate. "You held us all together. You took everything we gave you and asked for more." His hands stilled in her hair. "I've never seen anything so beautiful. So strong."
He rinsed her hair carefully, tilting her head back, shielding her eyes from the water. Then he picked up a soft cloth and began washing her face, her neck, behind her ears, places no one had ever cared for with such attention.
"You don't have to be strong right now," he whispered. "Let us hold you. Let us take care of you."
Damien entered quietly, carrying a small wooden box. He set it on the edge of the tub and opened it. Inside were jars of salves, bandages, and healing herbs. He knelt beside Kael, his cool presence a contrast to the steam.
"Some of these need tending," he said, his voice clinical but his eyes warm. "The deeper bites. Let me."
He worked with vampire precision, examining each wound, applying cool salves that numbed and healed. Where Enzo had kissed her bruises, Damien traced them with his fingers, his touch light as a feather. He paid special attention to the bite marks on her inner thighs, the ones that had broken skin, cleaning them carefully and applying his own blood mixed with healing herbs, a thick, coppery paste that tingled and then soothed.
"Drink," he said, holding a crystal glass to her lips. The wine was cool, sweet, mixed with his blood. She tasted him in it, ancient, powerful, filled with centuries of love he was only now learning to give. She drank slowly, and he held the glass for her, watching her throat work, his eyes dark with something tender and possessive.
Rafe was last, appearing with shadows swirling around him like worried pets. He'd changed into soft clothes, cotton pants, and a loose shirt, and he looked younger, more vulnerable without his usual armor of chaos.
"I brought things," he said, almost shy, and set down a pile of fluffy towels, a soft robe, and warm socks. "For after. For when you're ready."
He didn't try to touch her yet, just sat on the edge of the tub and watched the others work, his shadows reaching out to brush against her skin like curious fingers.
When they finally lifted her from the bath, they dried her together, four sets of hands working in tandem. Enzo held her steady while Kael wrapped her hair in a towel. Damien dried her legs with careful strokes. Rafe wrapped her in the softest robe she'd ever felt, something that felt like clouds against her skin.
They carried her back to the bedroom, but the bed had been changed. Fresh sheets, soft blankets, pillows piled high. Someone had opened the windows, letting in the fresh morning air and the sound of birds. Someone else had lit candles, not the heavy ritual incense, but something light, vanilla and jasmine.
They settled her in the center and then climbed in around her, creating a nest of bodies and warmth.
"Talk to us," Enzo said, stroking her hair. "Tell us what you're feeling." And she did. The words came slowly at first, then faster, tumbling out of her, how overwhelmed she was, how terrified she was of losing them, how she didn't feel worthy of this much devotion, how she was afraid the peace wouldn't last.
They listened. They didn't interrupt, didn't try to fix it. They just held her and listened. Then they talked.
Enzo told her about his childhood, not the violence she'd heard about before, but the small moments of kindness. A nurse who'd snuck him sweets when his father wasn't looking. A stray dog he'd kept for three weeks before his father found out and had it taken away. The first time he'd shifted and felt free, truly free, running through the forest with no one to answer to
"I want to give you that," he said, his voice thick. "Freedom. Safety. A place where you never have to be afraid."
Kael shared memories she'd never heard, moments he'd watched her from afar when they were children, before the blood bond was sealed, how he'd seen her playing in the gardens and wanted to join her. How he'd stolen a flower once, the one she'd dropped, and kept it pressed in a book for years. "I loved you before I knew what love was," he said, pressing his forehead to hers. "I will love you until I don't exist anymore."
Damien spoke of his loneliness, centuries of it, stretching back so far he could barely remember what it felt like to be warm. He told her about the nights he'd spent in empty castles, the parties he'd attended surrounded by people and feeling completely alone. The time he'd watched a family from a rooftop, a mother tucking her children into bed, and felt something crack inside him that never healed. "You gave me back my heartbeat," he whispered. "Not the physical one, that never stopped. But the emotional one. The part of me that wanted to keep going."
Rafe was quiet for a long time, and they let him be. When he finally spoke, his voice was rough, uncertain. "I've never stayed anywhere," he said. "Never wanted to. The chaos... it was easier than feeling. Easier than caring. But you..." He took her hand, his fingers trembling. "You make me want to build something. Stay somewhere. Be someone worth staying for."
She cried then, not the harsh sobs of grief, but soft tears of release, of love, of finally feeling safe enough to let go. They held her through it, each of them touching her somehow, a hand on her back, fingers in her hair, a cool palm against her cheek, shadows wrapping around her ankles like a promise. You're allowed to be overwhelmed," Enzo whispered against her hair. "You're allowed to need us. We're here."
The lovemaking that followed was different from anything that had come before. Enzo took her first, but there was no urgency, no roughness. He moved above her slowly, deeply, his eyes locked with hers, an intensity that felt like worship. He whispered "I love you" with every thrust, but he also whispered other things, promises, apologies for past hurts, and dreams for their future. "I'll never hurt you again," he breathed, his forehead pressed to hers. "Not like before. Never like that."
She believed him.
When they finished, he didn't pull away. He stayed inside her, holding her, kissing her eyelids, her cheeks, her mouth. He stayed until she was ready for the next.
Kael was gentler than she'd ever known him. He entered her slowly, watching her face for any sign of discomfort, adjusting his angle until she gasped with pleasure rather than soreness. He held her close, chest to chest, his heart beating against hers.
"Tell me if it's too much," he murmured, his voice ragged with restraint.
"It isn't," she whispered back. "I want to feel you. All of you."
He made love to her like she was sacred, like she was precious, his movements slow and deliberate. When she came, it was soft, rolling through her like waves, and he followed her, burying his face in her neck and whispering her name like a prayer.
Damien was cool and sensual, taking his time. He fed from her throat while moving inside her, but his bites were gentle, careful, giving as much as he took. His fingers traced patterns on her skin, mapping her body as if he were memorizing every inch.
"Beautiful," he whispered, his eyes glowing softly in the dimming light. "So beautiful. So mine. So ours."
Rafe was last, and he was the most surprising. He entered her slowly, his shadows caressing her everywhere his hands couldn't reach, her breasts, her hips, her throat. He moved with an almost hypnotic rhythm, his eyes never leaving hers.
"I love you," he said, and it sounded like wonder, like discovery. "I actually love you. How the fuck did that happen?" She laughed, and he smiled, and they moved together until the laughter turned to gasps and the gasps turned to soft cries of release. After, they didn't separate. They stayed tangled together, touching her constantly, a hand on her hip, fingers in her hair, a cool chest against her back, warm breath on her neck.
They fed her. Someone had brought a tray, fresh fruit, cheese, bread, and chocolate. They fed her with their fingers, laughing when she got crumbs on the sheets, kissing the juice from her lips when she bit into a strawberry. Enzo held grapes to her mouth; Kael broke off pieces of bread and cheese; Damien fed her chocolate, his cool fingers brushing her lips; Rafe made a game of it, trying to get her to laugh with ridiculous faces.
They massaged her again, her shoulders, her feet, her hands. They braided her hair and then unbraided it. They told her more stories and listened to hers. They planned ridiculous things for the future: a vacation to a beach where Rafe could learn to surf, a ridiculous party where Damien would have to dance, and a garden she wanted to plant with herbs and flowers.
By the time the sun began to set, painting the room in gold and rose, Selene felt whole again. She lay in the center of the bed, surrounded by her four kings, the aftercare having healed more than her body. It had strengthened their bonds. The rules were working.
Or so she thought.
It started as a whisper at the edge of her consciousness. A thread of sensation that didn't belong to her. She tried to ignore it, sinking deeper into the warmth of their bodies, but it grew stronger. Insistent.
Pain. Not her own.
Selene's eyes snapped open. She sat up abruptly, clutching her chest, her breath coming in sharp gasps.
"Selene?" Enzo was instantly alert, his hand on her shoulder. "What's wrong?"
"I can..." She pressed her palm over her heart, feeling the wrongness of it. The rhythm was off. Too fast. Too desperate. "I can feel him. Someone's dying."
Kael sat up, alert. "Who?"
"I don't know." She squeezed her eyes shut, reaching for the sensation. It was faint but unmistakable now, a thread connecting her to someone distant, someone in agony. The bond was new and raw, pulling at her with terrifying urgency. "But they're connected to us for what we did last night. I can feel them bleeding out."
Damien's face went pale. "The ritual. We bound the crowns, but we didn't close the circle. Anyone with a blood claim to the throne would have felt the surge of power. Felt you."
"Which means," Rafe said, shadows already swirling around him, tense and ready, "someone else knows what we are now. What she is."
Selene looked down at her hands. In the fading light, she could see it now-a faint silver glow beneath her skin, pulsing in time with that distant, dying heartbeat. The mark of the full moon ritual had done more than bind her to her kings.
It had made her a beacon. Something dark was already moving toward the light.
