Chapter 46 Fading Heartbeats
Chapter 46 Fading Heartbeats
The sensation grew stronger as the sun climbed higher.
Selene sat up in the center of the bed, clutching her chest, her breath coming in short, painful gasps. The aftercare, the warmth, the safety - it all faded as the foreign heartbeat slammed against her own like a second, dying drum.
Enzo was instantly alert, sitting up beside her, his hand covering hers over her heart. "Selene? Talk to me."
Kael shifted from behind her, his silver eyes sharp with concern. Damien and Rafe both sat up; the room's calm was shattered in seconds.
"I can feel him," she whispered, voice strained. "He's close. Closer than before. Young… maybe twenty. Male. He's bleeding out. Alone. Terrified. And he knows us. He knows what we did last night. The ritual… it woke something in him. Or connected him to us."
The bond between the five of them flared with shared alarm. Enzo's hand tightened on hers. "Can you see him? A face? A name?"
Selene closed her eyes, reaching deeper into the thread. The images came in fragments - flashes of pain and memory that weren't hers.
A young man with dark hair, matted with blood. A warehouse. Silver chains. A tattoo on his wrist - a serpent eating its own tail. A voice whispering in his mind: The Moon's Daughter has awakened. The crowns are bound. Find her… or die trying.
"He's one of us," Selene said, her voice breaking. "Not fully. But connected. He has shadow blood. Like Rafe. But weaker. Diluted. He was hidden. Raised in secret. Someone was protecting him from the old families. And now… the ritual called to him. It's killing him because he's not strong enough to handle the surge."
Rafe's shadows exploded around him, dark and agitated. "A shadow-kin? I have no siblings. No family. I was the last."
"Apparently not," Damien said quietly. "The old bloodlines hid many. Especially the ones with mixed heritage. He could be a cousin. Or a half-brother. The ritual would have awakened any dormant claim."
Kael stood, already reaching for his clothes. "We have to find him. If he's dying because of us, we can't leave him."
Enzo nodded, but his eyes were on Selene. "You're connected to him. Can you guide us?"
She closed her eyes again, focusing. The pain in her chest intensified, the dying man's fear flooding her. "South Side. An old warehouse near the river. He's chained. They left him there to die after the ritual surge hit him. He was trying to reach us. To warn us."
The group moved fast.
They left the lakeside estate in two armored SUVs, racing back toward Chicago. Enzo drove, his jaw tight, one hand on the wheel and one on Selene's knee - grounding her as she navigated by the thread's pull. In the back, Rafe's shadows writhed against the windows like living smoke, his black-fire eyes fixed on nothing, seeing through his half-brother's pain. Kael checked weapons with methodical precision, each magazine click loud in the silence. Damien said nothing, but his fangs were out, a low growl rumbling in his chest every time Selene winced.
"He's bait," Damien said finally. "You know this. They left him alive enough to call to her. They want her to come."
"Then they're stupid," Enzo said, "because we're all coming."
When they arrived at the warehouse, the scene was grim - and wrong.
The building was old and abandoned, half-collapsed. No guards. No trip wires. Just the stench of blood and ozone. Inside, chained to a support beam in a pool of his own blood, was a young man no older than twenty-two. Dark hair, pale skin, faint shadow tattoos on his arms that glowed weakly. His eyes - the same black-fire as Rafe's - fluttered open as they approached.
A phone lay crushed near his hand. The screen still flickered with a partial text: -she's coming. Move now. Don't be here when-
"You…" he rasped, blood bubbling from his lips. "The crowns… I felt you. All of you. The ritual… it woke me up. But it's too much. I'm not strong enough."
Rafe dropped to his knees beside him, shadows gently probing the wounds. "Who are you?"
The young man coughed, blood spraying. "Elias. Elias Draven. Your… half-brother. My mother hid me. She was human. She knew what you were. What I might become. She kept me away from the families." His eyes rolled, fighting unconsciousness. "But last night… the moon called me. The bonds… they pulled me in. And now I'm dying because of it."
Selene knelt beside him, taking his hand. The thread between them strengthened - not a full bond, not like the crowns, but a tether. A claim. A weaker fifth thread that wanted to anchor but lacked the strength.
"We're here," she said. "We won't let you die."
Elias looked at her, eyes wide with awe and pain. "The Moon's Daughter. I felt you most of all. You're the center. The heart." He gripped her hand with surprising force. "But the old families… they know now. They felt the surge. I heard them. On the phone. Before they smashed it and ran. They're gathering. New York. Los Angeles. Europe. They see you as a threat. Or a weapon. They won't stop until they have you… or destroy her."
Enzo's jaw clenched. "How many?"
"Too many," Elias whispered. "And they know about me now, too. They know the bloodline isn't dead."
Rafe's shadows wrapped around his half-brother, trying to stabilize him. "You're not dying today. Your family. You're shadow. You're one of us."
But when Damien moved to feed Elias his blood, Kael caught his wrist. "Wait. We don't know what shadow-kin blood does mixed with vampire. We could kill him faster."
"He's dying anyway," Damien said, voice flat.
"Then we do it together," Selene said. "All of us. Share the burden so no one strain overwhelms him."
They worked as one, but the tension remained.
Damien fed him blood first - just a few drops, watching for reaction. When Elias's breathing steadied, Kael added pack energy, a low hum of shifter healing. Enzo used his own blood - older, more potent - to seal the worst wounds. Rafe's shadows wove through it all, holding the threads together. Selene held Elias's hand, the fifth thread slowly strengthening as they fought to keep him alive, not fully bound but claimed. Protected.
By the time the sun was high, Elias was stable, though weak. He lay on a makeshift bed in the warehouse, breathing easier, his shadow tattoos glowing faintly.
"You saved me," he whispered, looking at Selene. "All of you. I thought I was alone. Now… I have a family."
Selene smiled through her tears. "You do. Welcome home."
But the warning hung over them like a shadow.
The old families were coming.
The real war was no longer just in Chicago.
It was coming for all of them.
And the Moon's Daughter and her growing circle - four crowns bound, one shadow-kin claimed - would have to face it together.
