Chapter 76: A Prisoner

Chapter 76: A Prisoner
There was a person clad in a long, tattered black cloak with a hood over their head.

Aniya took a cautious step back, her heart suddenly racing in her chest as everything around her fell quiet.

The guard had a smirk on his face as he shoved the person inside the same dungeon with her. Aniya could hear the clanking of chains with each movement.

Chains?

How dangerous was this person if they had to be put in chains? She herself was, afterall, a suspected murderer, yet they had not put her in chains!

Her hands balled into fists at either side of her as she watched the guard shift his attention from the hooded person to her. His smile of mischief widened and she felt something come run down her back.

“Please,” she begged quietly, her voice more air than words, “tell your Gamma that I need to see him.”

She couldn’t tell if he understood her because nothing in his expression changed. Instead, that smile remained on his face. Like he wanted her attention to be drawn to something.

She frowned and looked at his hands that held the chains in them. There was a connecting loop welded to the wall. He raised his hand, as if to connect the chains to them but at the last moment, he tilted his head to the side and dropped the chains.

Then he said something quickly in the Lycan’s language as if it was something so humorous that his laughter couldn’t let him complete the sentence properly.

Was the prisoner even a person?

Or a werewolf?

Like them.

Something in her heart tightened.

The next thing she heard was her own voice. Shaky. Desperate. Begging the guard to chain down the prisoner.

But the guard only laughed harder, shoved the prisoner to the floor, pulled the bars shut and vanished into the dark hallway of the dungeon.

Till she couldn’t hear his laughter anymore.

He was gone.

Aniya gulped as she watched the prisoner who laid eerily still on the floor. The silence was deafening, she could hear herself breathe.

Couldn’t Ikrus feel her fear? Even as it was clogging her lungs and threatening to steal her breath from her?!

Was all he had said about their moon goddess and this connection of theirs fake?

With his proposal this morning, one would think he would be there for her no matter what.

By Ignas, she had to stop thinking about him and think about how she would get out of this. Alive. She had to get out of this place. Find her son.

She had to leave this place alive.

Her gaze fell upon the loose chains and in that moment a thought struck her.

Had they… no!

Had… NO!

Her breath hitched.

Had they, perhaps, sent this prisoner here to kill her?

She backed away slowly, her gaze not shifting from the prisoner now as many thoughts raced through her mind.

No. No. No.

They must have sent Ikrus away. He probably didn’t even know about this. If Ikrus wanted to kill her, he would have said it to her face and did it.

He had the chance last night.

But if they were trying to get rid of her like this, in this dungeon, without a fair trial and quickly too, then they must have sent Ikrus away.

By Ignas, that was why he wasn’t here.

They had sent him away and they planned that by the time he would return, she would be gone.

She gritted her teeth and as a thought wrapped around her like a coffin.

She was alone.

Then, for the first time, the prisoner moved.
