Chapter 64 - Involve the Little One

She shoved his face against her neck, ignoring the sparks that didn't last at all as he yanked himself away from her.

“You are making it worse,” he snapped, taking a staggering step back, his shoulders stiff.

He gritted his teeth, and his eyes kept flashing between those two dangerous colors.

She bit her tongue, the consequences of her words turning to embers in her veins.

He would usually shift into his wolf, and he would chase her down. She didn't know when she suddenly had a calming effect on him but she honestly didn't care.

Nothing seemed to be working and he gritted a growl between his teeth.

In a flash, his nose was pressed against the crook of her neck. She dissolved into his touch against her better judgement and when his lips pulled against hers in reckless abandon, she could not find it in her to fight him. Not until his canines had nipped against her lips, his hand around her neck trembling with something he couldn't control. She shoved her hand against his chest, suppressing the spiralling desire in her veins as it collided with fear that was too much to be hers.

He pulled away sharply but he did not move, instead he rested his cheek against hers and that felt even more intimate.

“Well, I am thinking of him too.” His words were harsh, a whisper. “Of his beating heart in my claws. At least, when it comes to him, we both have something to think about.”

Her hands fisted against his chest. Not because of the meaning of the words, but how affected she was by his closeness.

Maybe he was affected too, or maybe he had sensed it, because he pulled away slightly enough for his gaze to hold her own.

His dark ones boring into brown eyes.

Their breath mingled, and for a moment, Aniya felt at peace, like everything had suddenly fallen into place.

The right place.

Just two creatures, sharing a moment, underneath her veil.

What?!

He was underneath her veil?!

That felt too close!

He must have sensed the shift in her emotions because he tried to pull away but she held unto him, before she could even find the reason for why she had done that.

“Why did you think he gave it to me?” The words slipped past her lips and something flashed in her eyes.

“Many want me dead.”

“Because you are the heir?”

“Because they are foolish! They think that my father cares enough that my death would matter to him. The throne would sooner go to Oana or a bastard that he has been hiding away somewhere, than to me. Not except I kill him.”

Tension shifted in the room and Aniya gulped.

“Regarding the intruder in your room, there are more guards in the pack house. Also, no one matches your description.” He pulled away from her completely then.

The veil cascaded over her face and whatever had felt right a moment ago, vanished.

He was staring at her now.

Differently.

As if he was accessing something. Calculating. Deciding.

“I must go and see.. the little one now.”

Aniya’s stomach dropped.

The little one?

He had called him little one.

Not our son.

Not Arlo.

By Ignas, of course. He would punish her for trying to kill him. Whatever desire he had for her had been satiated and now… now…

“Not him!” She grabbed his hand with both of hers. “Arlo did nothing. Please.”

He looked down at her with a concealed and cold gaze.

Something in the pit of her belly twisted as a realization dawned on her.

Tonight had been planned. Not just by her but by Ikrus. The separation of her and her son had been intentional, the toothache was just fate being on their side. If Oana had been in on it, she didn't know. All she knew was that the wicked priest had her son.

Ikrus had known about the poison. He had known about everything.

He was probably supposed to kill her with it. But he hadn't. So, she should have faith that he would do nothing to Arlo but there had been a strong shift in his eyes.

A moment earlier, he had changed his mind.

That shift promised nothing but danger.

To her. To Arlo.

Especially to her poor, defenceless son.

This was her fault.

She fell to her knees.

“Punish me, instead.” Tears glimmered in her eyes. “He didn't do anything!”

Ikrus pulled his hand away as if he had been burned, then he headed to the door with quick steps.

“Ikrus!” She raced after him; defeat consuming her voice. “What will you do to him?!”

“Whatever I please,” came his clipped tone.

The door slammed sh
ut before she could even reach it.
