Rage.
It tumbled inside Ikrus, colliding with so many other feelings. Confusion tore at him and his heart pounded with more things that he couldn’t understand.
I don’t want it.
Her words played over and over again in his mind as he tore through the hall of the Temple.
Her first words to him after realizing what their intimacy had completed was that she didn’t want him, didn’t want this.
He could feel the pain throbbing in his chest even now.
That made him even angrier.
He shouldn’t be feeling these things. He shouldn’t feel this way! That was against the plan!
Everything that had happened tonight was against the plan!
He was supposed to let her die. Leave Arlo here then wait for his father to order him to the North Border.
But he had seen her on that table, gasping for breath… actually dying and…
He had not want it.
He gritted his teeth as his hand held the doorknob to Verona Quarters. The tension in his body making him halt for a moment as his memories replayed in his head.
He had not wanted her to die.
Not just that.
He had seen her in that state, and he just wanted her even more than he had ever felt since he had met her. The desire was so intense that his wolf had surged to the surface.., but not to kill.
He didn’t know when she had such calming effect on him. He had thought his wolf to be a strange one, especially when he started shifting and chasing her to kill just like he did everyone whatever that madness set in.
Truly, Veris had been giving him more concoctions to stay in control. But something had been different lately.
When his wolf surged to the surface, he no longer wanted to kill her. He just wanted her, as much as the other side of him did.
These things.., he couldn’t understand.
But there was one thing he was certain of.
This had changed everything for him. For her too.
His heart sank again as her words played in his mind. Those words cut through him like a dagger.
I don’t want this.
Changed for her because she had wanted to tumble in the sheets with him for her own survival but at the end of the day, she did not want him; not the matebond, not any part of this.
Yet she thought of the one who he had killed, the stranger that had her lips on hers and there had been hatred in her when she had thought of him.
He had felt everything. Her emotions washing over him constantly.
That, in itself was making him lose his mind.
This… everything… had changed.
Nothing could go back to the way they used to be or how he had planned they would be.
The pain coursed through him again. Hort breath of fury pressed out of his nose.
The door flew open under his grip. His red eyes combed the room for Veris but he wasn’t there. He could smell him though. Smell him and Oana.
So he followed the scent.
“Hand over the pup and I will go my way,” he heard Oana say impatiently as he moved further into the room.
“You can leave him with me. Ikrus will come and get the child himself,” Veris’ voice followed.
“What is this madness—- I don’t care.” Oana snapped. “I don’t have time for it. Just give me the child! I promised my friend that I will come back with Arlo, if I don’t she will rip my head off.”
Veris laughed, seeming to enjoy himself.
“She has no strength for that. She is just human—-“
Something snapped in Ikrus at that statement and he growled, alerting both of them of his presence.
Oana’s eyes lit up when she saw him. “There!” She looked back at Veris sharply. “You should have just given me Arlo, now you have to face angry him.”
She giggled, hurrying off and out of the temple.
Silence reigned.
The moon shone brightly in the middle of them, from the circular space in the roof, leaving each of them shrouded in darkness as tension settled in the hall.
Veris was the first to move, shifting
into the light with a smile.
“Tell me that she is dead.”
That was it.
He snapped.
