Chapter 63 - Worse and Worse

He took a step closer to her, his face twisted with concern but that only seemed to have made it worse.

She yelled at him to stop, to go back.

He took a hurried step back, his face filled with shock.

Then it fell quiet in her mind and suddenly, her head didn't feel like it would explode any more.

She dragged in a breath of relief and looked at him.

“What was that?” Somehow, it felt like he understood everything even if she had not explained it to him.

Something ticked in his jaws and he turned his back to her. She rose up to her feet immediately.

“Ikrus!”

His back stiffened and he turned to her, his eyes a storm of emotions.

“It is not supposed to happen to you,” he said, his voice cutting through the room.

“I don't understand.”

“I knew that the process would be complete. That we would be bonded for as long as we live after this—”

“Bonded for life.”

Had he— had he said something about that this afternoon? He must have. He had explained everything about the life span and—

Her thoughts were crashing against one another.

He must have. He had explained everything and still—

Aniya gulped.

This was different. Having it actually happen was different.

Confusion coursed through her, more than her own.

Her gaze jerked to Ikrus.

Ah, by Ignas, his confusion.

This was coming with more consequences than she had anticipated.

“I just didn't know humans could feel it too.”

Somehing in the air made her shiver and she brushed her hands over her shoulder.

She was naked. She knew that but she hardly cared.

“Can you feel my emotions?” That was stupid, he had said he could feel hers. Why was she asking him again.

But he nodded anyways.

“I don't want it,” she snapped and she felt a pain in her heart almost immediately. She groaned, clenching her fist against her chest.

It was gone, just as quickly.

She looked up at him and his face was cold.

“I apologize. It slipped.”

No. She didn't want any part of this. All she had wanted before was to get pregnant with his child and use that child as a protection for her and Arlo’s life.

This entanglement— this feeling each other's feelings– she did not want any part of it.

“Take it away.”

“Me es ve entun.”

“What does that mean?”

“Too late now.”

“There must be something.”

He turned away from her and grabbed his shirt. His face stone cold, his movement q little too rigid.

She looked around the study and her gaze felt to the shreds of her nightdress everywhere. The memory of how she had lost it flashed in her mind and Ikrus stiffened some distance away from her.

She frowned.

He was feeling her feeling again.

This was too invasive.

She wanted her son. She wanted to distract herself by caring for him. She wanted to see him so she could come back to her senses. Reevaluate, re-strategize.

She needed Arlo.

“Arlo—”

“Who gave it to you?”

The poison. He was asking about the poison.

He was still some steps away from her, now fully clothed but then he still felt too close.

She needed to get out of this study!

In fact, she didn't care that he could feel her feelings any longer. She just needed to get away from him.

For now.

She needed to think.

“The one who saved me.” She paced further away, as much as she study could permit. Then she grabbed her veil off the floor and threw it over her face.

It just felt so stupid to be so vulnerable around him right now. Although, she loved to flaunt her face to traumatize him but something about it and this very moment, felt like the most vulnerable part of her.

She would have reached for one of his daggers if she didn't already know that she had stretched his patience far too thin tonight.

He arched her an eyebrow and she knew he expected more from her.

“I don't know his name and I didn't see his face. But you’ve killed him. So I doubt you have to worry that he will come after you.”

He had kissed her. That, she remembered. She still didn't know how she felt about that. Wrong, on one part, but why? She was in no committed relationship with anyone.

On the other part, her emotions were a mess. She had been in heat that night. Her emotions were a mess.

He was in front of her in a flash.

She staggered, her back hitting the wall.

“You are thinking of him.” His voice sounded murderous.

Her heart pounded when she saw his eyes flickering from red to black.

“Get out of my head! It is none of your concern what I think about.”

Those words had been a mistake.
