Chapter 38

As the cab pulls up in front of my house, I hand the driver some cash and thank him. Stepping out onto the sidewalk, I feel a sense of relief wash over me. The chaotic scene with Selena and the reporters is finally behind me, at least for now.

As I approach the front door,I press the password on the lock slowly. The migraine that had been threatening all day starts to pulse behind my temples, and I close my eyes for a moment, trying to will it away. Taking a deep breath, I unlock the door and step inside.

The house is eerily quiet, which is unusual. Normally, I'd hear the faint sounds of music or the TV coming from the living room, courtesy of my maid who enjoys keeping herself entertained while she works. But today, there's nothing but silence.

I kick off my shoes and walk further into the house, calling out, "Sarah? Are you here?" No response. My headache intensifies, making me wince.I make my way through the house, checking each room, but there's no sign of her. Concern gnaws at me as I reach for my phone to call her, but then I remember that I left it in the cab. Great, just great.

With the migraine worsening, I decide to take some painkillers from the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. As I open the mirrored cabinet, I catch a glimpse of myself, my disheveled appearance, and the worry lines etched on my face. Today has been nothing short of a disaster.

After swallowing the pills, I head to the kitchen to grab a glass of water. The cool liquid soothes my parched throat, but the silence in the house still unnerves me. I can't shake the feeling that something is off.

As I wander back into the living room, I notice a note on the coffee table. It's written in Sarah's neat handwriting. I pick it up and read:

"Dear Ms. Wayne,

I'm sorry for not being able to greet you today. I had to leave suddenly due to a family emergency. I didn't want to disturb you, and I hope you understand. I've left your dinner in the fridge, and I'll be back as soon as I can.

Sincerely,

Sarah"

Relief washes over me as I read the note. Sarah's absence is explained, and I can only hope that her family emergency is nothing serious. I made a mental note to check in on her later.

With the mystery of the quiet house resolved, I head to the fridge to heat up dinner. The painkillers are starting to work on my migraine, and I can finally relax a little. The chaos of the day feels distant now, and I'm grateful for the solitude.

As I sat down to eat my dinner, the silence of the house became oddly unsettling. The rhythmic tick-tock of the wall clock seemed to grow louder in the absence of any other sound. I was just about to dismiss my unease as a side effect of the migraine when I heard it—a faint, almost imperceptible creaking sound coming from the hallway.

My heart began to race as my senses sharpened. Every nerve in my body seemed to scream at me to be cautious. I couldn't help but recall the chaotic scene from earlier in the day with Selena and the reporters. Could they have followed me here? But the footsteps I heard were too quiet, too deliberate for that. They didn't belong to a horde of reporters.

Before I could react, a strong hand clamped over my mouth and nose. Panic surged through me as I struggled to breathe. My eyes snapped open, and I tried to scream, but the hand muffling my cries was unrelenting. Desperation flooded my veins as I realized I was not dealing with just one intruder; there were two arms, two forces holding me firmly in place.

Frantically, I attempted to free myself, pushing against the unseen assailant's chest with all my might. But the strength in those arms was formidable, and I couldn't break free. My vision blurred, and my limbs grew heavy as if I were succumbing to a powerful sedative.

My last conscious thought was a surge of terror as I felt myself slipping away, the world around me fading to black. The chaos of the day had given way to an even darker and more ominous nightmare.

As my consciousness returned in agonizing fragments, I found myself in a disorienting state between wakefulness and a nightmarish dream. My senses were muddled, and my vision remained foggy, as if I were peering through a thick veil of uncertainty.

The sensation of movement rippled through me, and I realized I was being dragged, my body scraping across the floor. It was a slow, relentless motion, the rough surface of the carpet pricking against my skin like a thousand tiny needles. Panic welled up inside me as my mind struggled to make sense of the situation. Who were these people, and how had they invaded my home?

As I was pulled further away from the safety of my living room, I strained to hear any clues that might unravel this enigma. Amidst the dissonant chaos of my thoughts, I detected hushed whispers—a clandestine exchange of words that seemed to reverberate in the dark void around me.

One of the voices sounded oddly familiar. It was as if I'd heard it before, perhaps in a forgotten dream or a distant memory. My weakening senses strained to grasp the identity behind that voice, but it remained elusive, concealed within the murky labyrinth of my mind.

The other voice, however, was foreign and menacing, its words dripping with sinister intent. It was a guttural, gravelly sound that sent shivers down my spine. They conversed in hushed tones, their words an incomprehensible jumble that left me feeling utterly helpless.

With each passing moment, I felt myself slipping further into the abyss, the boundary between consciousness and oblivion growing increasingly porous. My limbs, heavy and uncooperative, refused to obey my commands. I struggled to open my eyes, to catch a glimpse of my captors, but the fog that shrouded my vision seemed impenetrable.

As my mind teetered on the precipice of surrender, I couldn't help but reflect on the chaos that had engulfed my life in a matter of hours. From the relentless reporters and Selena's inexplicable vendetta to the quietude of my empty home and now this sinister abduction, it was as if I had stumbled into the heart of a labyrinthine conspiracy.

My body protested the relentless dragging, muscles burning with a futile effort to resist. The carpet beneath me gave way to a colder, harder surface, signaling a change in my surroundings. Had I been taken outside? The air felt different, crisper, with a faint scent of dampness and decay.

The whispers persisted, though their words remained an impenetrable cipher. Desperation coursed through me as I realized that I was running out of time. I had to escape, to fight back, to reclaim my stolen reality. But the malevolent grip on my mouth and nose remained unyielding, and my feeble struggles were futile.

And then, just as the darkness threatened to claim me entirely, I heard a voice—a single word that pierced through the haze of my fading consciousness. It was my name, spoken with an urgency that cut through the confusion like a beacon in the night.

"Sarah"
