Chapter 104

Chapter 104
"Ellie sounds resourceful," he observed, his voice pitched low as if sharing a confidence. "Heading for higher ground, teaching the younger ones to mask their scent in water. Those aren't instinctive tactics; she's been planning this escape."

Ioannis nodded, the pendant warming against her skin as she considered the thirteen-year-old girl who had managed what adult wolves might find challenging, escaping a highly secure facility while guiding younger children.

"She must be extraordinary," she said softly. "To maintain that kind of strategic thinking despite whatever they've done to her."

"It gives me hope," Nickolas admitted, his storm-grey eyes reflecting the distant starlight. "If their conditioning hasn't broken her spirit, perhaps the other children have resisted in their own ways as well."

The pendant pulsed once, a gentle affirmation that spread warmth through Ioannis's chest. Through their bond flowed Nickolas's determination, wrapped around a core of protective rage that had only intensified since meeting Lucas.

"What Lucas said about the 'quiet room,'" she began, her voice catching slightly as she recalled the boy's matter-of-fact description of punishment for crying. "What kind of monsters treat children that way?"

Nickolas's jaw tightened, though his voice remained steady. "The kind who see them as test subjects rather than people. The kind who believe the end justifies any means."

The pendant cooled against Ioannis's skin, a warning chill that matched the horror curling in her stomach. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's protective rage building like gathering storm clouds, his tactical mind already calculating how to use Lucas's intelligence against the facility.

"We need to accelerate everything," she said, turning from the window to face him. "The toy production, the facility contact, the extraction planning. Now that we know they're bringing in younger children..."

"We will," Nickolas assured her, his hands finding her shoulders in a grounding gesture that sent warmth flowing through their bond. "The strategy council reconvenes at dawn. With Lucas's information, we can refine both our approach and extraction planning."

Ioannis touched the pendant at her throat, the metal warm against her fingertips. The thought of those children: Lucas, Ellie, Micha, and all the others still captive, filled her with a fierce determination that burned away her fatigue.

"We need to speak with the twins again," she said, her mind racing with new possibilities. "If Lucas responded so strongly to the toy, we might be able to adapt the design further—create specialised versions that address the specific conditioning these children have experienced."

Nickolas nodded, his eyes reflecting the same determination she felt surging through their bond. "The chemical suppression of their wolves concerns me most. If they've been drugged since childhood, they may not even understand what they truly are."

"The toys could help with that too," Ioannis said, moving toward the communication panel near the door. "Subtle encouragement of their wolf instincts through play patterns, sounds that speak to their wolves rather than their human consciousness."

She sent a quick message to the twins, requesting an early meeting before the dawn council. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's approval of her initiative flowing like warm sunlight.

"You should rest," he suggested, though he made no move toward the bed himself. "Tomorrow will be demanding."

Ioannis shook her head, the pendant pulsing gently against her skin. "I couldn't sleep now. Not with Ellie and Micha still out there." She returned to the window, searching the darkness as if sheer will might reveal the missing children. "Somewhere in those mountains, two werewolf children are hiding from pursuers, experiencing trees and stars perhaps for the first time in their lives."

Nickolas joined her, his arm slipping around her waist in silent support. They stood together, watching as clouds drifted across the star-strewn sky, occasionally revealing glimpses of the waning moon.

"The search teams know these mountains intimately," he said after a while, his voice pitched low with reassurance. "Every cave, every stream, every hidden valley. If Ellie chose higher ground, she's moving toward our patrols rather than away from them."

The thought provided some comfort, though Ioannis couldn't shake the image of Lucas's thin face as he'd spoken of his friends. The pendant warmed against her skin as she leaned slightly into Nickolas's embrace, drawing strength from his steady presence.

"When I spoke with Lucas," she said softly, "I kept thinking about what it would be like to grow up without knowing what you are. To be told you're different, special, but in a way that makes you property rather than precious."

"It won't be that way for much longer," Nickolas promised, his arm tightening slightly around her waist. "Not for any of them."

A soft chime from the communication panel interrupted the moment. Federico's voice came through, controlled but urgent: "Forgive the late hour, but there's been a development. The search teams have found something near the eastern ridge."

Ioannis felt her heart quicken, the pendant warming against her skin. "Something? Not someone?"

"Tracks," Federico clarified, his voice taut with controlled urgency. "And what appears to be a makeshift shelter. Recently abandoned."

Nickolas was already moving toward the door, his body shifting into the fluid efficiency that always emerged in crisis. "Where exactly?"

"Near Eagle's Pass, about fifteen miles from where Lucas was found. The team leader reports signs of two individuals, one larger than the other. The tracks lead further into the mountains."

The pendant pulsed with sudden heat against Ioannis's throat. "Ellie and Micha," she breathed, hope and fear tangling in her chest. "They're still moving."

"Tell the search teams to proceed with extreme caution," Nickolas instructed, his voice carrying the quiet authority that had always steadied Ioannis in moments of uncertainty. "These children have been conditioned to fear adults. Direct confrontation might send them deeper into hiding."

"Already done," Federico confirmed. "Luna Harvey has suggested using female trackers exclusively for the forward teams. Less threatening."

Ioannis moved to Nickolas's side, the pendant's warmth spreading through her chest. "I should go with them," she said, the certainty settling in her core like stone. "If Lucas responded to me, perhaps Ellie and Micha will too."

Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's protective instincts surge, though his expression remained composed. "The terrain is treacherous, especially at night."

"I grew up scaling the cliffs of Eternal Eclipse," she reminded him gently. "And these children need someone they might trust."

Federico's voice came through the communication panel again. "The search coordinator suggests waiting until first light. The tracks indicate the children are moving deeper into protected territory, away from the facility. They'll be safer with each mile."
