Chapter 103

Chapter 103
"You should sleep now," Sera suggested gently, adjusting the blankets around him. "Shadow will watch over you."

Lucas's eyes drooped despite his obvious effort to stay awake. "Promise you'll look for them?" he mumbled, his voice fading as exhaustion claimed him.

"We promise," Ioannis assured him, watching as he finally surrendered to sleep, the plush wolf clutched protectively against his chest.

She rose quietly, following Sera, Miles, and Brodie from the healing chamber. Outside, Nickolas waited with Luna Harvey and Federico, their expressions grave as they absorbed what they'd learned.

"Five more children," Nickolas said quietly, his storm-grey eyes meeting hers with understanding that flowed through their bond. "Recently arrived."

"And two still out there somewhere," Ioannis added, touching the pendant that had returned to its normal warmth against her skin. "This Ellie sounds resourceful, heading for higher ground. But the younger one..."

"I've already dispatched search teams to focus on waterways within a thirty-mile radius of the facility," Luna Harvey informed them, her elegant features composed despite the tension evident in her posture. "If the boy couldn't swim well, we must prioritise those areas."

Federico's fingers moved rapidly across his tablet. "I'm updating the extraction planning with Lucas's information. 'Training rooms,' 'quiet rooms for punishment,' dietary restrictions based on performance—it confirms our worst fears about how they're treating these children."

"And the chemical suppression of their wolves," Luna Harvey added, her voice hardening with controlled fury. "Our healers are still analysing the compound in Lucas's bloodstream, but preliminary results suggest it's designed to prevent the natural emergence of wolf instincts."

The pendant cooled against Ioannis's skin. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's protective rage simmering beneath his composed exterior, the same fury she felt building within herself.

"He responded well to the toy," Miles observed, his usual playfulness subdued by the gravity of the situation. "The connection was immediate."

"It validates our approach," Brodie agreed. "If these toys can provide comfort to traumatised children while gathering intelligence, we're on the right track."

Nickolas nodded, his tactical mind evident in his focused expression. "We need to accelerate production and delivery. Every hour these children remain in that facility increases their suffering."

"And we need to adapt our extraction planning based on Lucas's information," Federico added, still working on his tablet. "If they're bringing in younger children now, the situation may be evolving faster than we anticipated."

Luna Harvey studied Ioannis with maternal assessment. "You connected with him remarkably well. He responded to you more openly than to anyone except Sera."

Heat rose to Ioannis's cheeks at the unexpected praise. The pendant warmed against her skin as she nodded once in acknowledgment. "I simply tried to meet him where he was. He's been through so much."

"More than we can imagine," Nickolas said, his hand finding the small of her back in a supportive gesture that sent warmth flowing through their bond. "But his information gives us a critical advantage. We now have confirmation of the facility's internal structure and their methods."

"And we know there are at least two children still out there," Sera added, her expression hardening with determination. "Somewhere between here and that facility."

Luna Harvey straightened, her storm-grey eyes, so like her son's, filled with maternal resolve. "I'll coordinate with the search teams personally. If these children are hiding in our territory, we will find them."

"We should adapt the toy designs based on Lucas's information," Miles suggested, already tapping notes into his tablet. "Specific features targeting the 'training' he mentioned, designs that would appear to support their conditioning while actually counteracting it."

"And we need to proceed with the initial facility contact immediately," Federico added. "Now that we know they're bringing in younger children, time is even more critical."

Nickolas nodded, his tactical mind evident in his focused expression. "The strategy council should reconvene at dawn. With Lucas's intelligence, we can refine both our approach and extraction planning."

The pendant pulsed once against Ioannis's skin, a gentle affirmation that spread warmth through her chest. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's protective determination flowing toward her like golden light, his tactical mind already calculating next steps.

"For now," Luna Harvey said, her elegant hands gesturing toward the healing chamber where Lucas slept, "we should let him rest. The healers will monitor him through the night, and Sera has agreed to remain nearby since he trusts her presence."

Sera nodded confirmation, her expression softening slightly as she glanced toward the sleeping boy. "He's been through hell. The least I can do is ensure he feels safe while he sleeps."

As they made their way back through the compound toward their quarters, Ioannis felt the weight of responsibility settling more firmly on her shoulders. The pendant's warmth spread through her chest, not burning as it had during the ceremony but steady and comforting, like the Goddess's silent presence guiding her forward.

"You're thinking about the other two," Nickolas observed, his voice pitched for her ears alone as they walked. Through their bond flowed his understanding, wrapped around a core of protective determination that had only grown stronger since meeting Lucas.

"Ellie and Micha," Ioannis confirmed, the names feeling important to speak aloud. "She's thirteen, guiding an eight-year-old through wilderness they've never experienced before. Hunted by people who see them as property rather than children."

Nickolas's hand found hers, his fingers intertwining with practised ease. "The search teams will find them. Storm Striders' territory has the most experienced trackers in all ten territories. If Ellie and Micha are out there, we'll find them."

The pendant warmed against her skin, a gentle pulse that matched her quickening heartbeat as they entered their suite. Ioannis moved immediately to the wall of windows, searching the darkness as if she might spot the missing children by sheer force of will. Night had fully descended, wrapping the mountains in shadow while stars glittered like scattered diamonds across the inky sky.

"They're out there somewhere," she whispered, placing her palm against the cool glass. "Alone and afraid."

Nickolas joined her at the window, his presence beside her a steady anchor in the emotional storm. Through their bond, she felt his tactical mind calculating search patterns, terrain challenges, survival probabilities, always planning, always preparing.
