Chapter 38 What Is Your Relationship with the Wrights?

Christopher's reason for pulling this stunt was simple - pure revenge.

He'd gone through hell to get time off and fly to California, all to properly meet Evelyn and win her over with his personal charm and superior skills, convincing her to solve that major headache for the Department of Defense.

But to his surprise, the moment his plane landed, this guy Adrian had already connected Evelyn with their Secretary Moore and negotiated the terms for declassification.

Christopher was absolutely furious.

But he couldn't take it out on Evelyn, so he could only vent on Adrian. Now that ten minutes had passed, Morgan Corporation must be in total chaos from his virus, so naturally he had to show up and gloat.

Besides, he was confident they'd never trace it back to him - otherwise, how could he dare call himself the Defense Department's most brilliant hacker?

"Christopher?" Adrian squinted and repeated the name a few times, drawing a complete blank. He frowned. "You're saying you created the virus?"

"That's right."

"Why?"

"No reason." Christopher raised his eyebrows smugly. "Just for fun."

Adrian's frown deepened. Before he could speak, Christopher continued: "Don't bother trying to figure out who I am or where I'm from - you won't find anything. As for the virus, even if you call the police, they won't trace it to me."

The Morgan Corporation employees around them were seething with anger, but Adrian remained calm. "So what do you want?"

Christopher looked down at him arrogantly. "You. Get on your knees and beg me. Make me happy, and I might consider removing your virus."

There was an uproar around them. Adrian stared at him for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed.

Christopher frowned. "What are you laughing at?"

"You don't know?" Adrian scoffed. "The virus was already removed."

Christopher froze, pulling out his laptop from his bag while muttering in disbelief, "That's impossible."

Nobody could crack his virus, especially not in less than half an hour. During that private competition at the Defense Department, even his most skilled colleague had taken forty-six minutes.

But the result was obvious - Adrian wasn't lying.

Morgan Corporation was running normally. His virus had been removed without a trace. Morgan Corporation's IT department actually had someone this capable?!

"Why is it impossible?" Adrian sneered. "A high school student cracked it easily. Is it really worth bragging about?"

"A high school student?"

As soon as he said that, Assistant Parker came out with Evelyn, saying, "Oh, so this is the guy who claims he caused the trouble?"

Evelyn! Christopher's eyes widened. He was about to explode with rage.

He'd planted the virus to get back at Adrian for stealing his chance to convince Evelyn, and in the end, it was Evelyn who cracked his virus!

Good God, Christopher was so angry he wanted to tear them both apart on the spot.

But when they both turned to look at him, he had to hide his fury and put on a mysterious smile, acting enigmatic: "Young lady, I'll remember you."

"I look forward to our next meeting."

With that, he took advantage of the Morgan Corporation security guards' distraction and quickly slipped away.

Evelyn looked at his face and felt it was somehow familiar, like she'd seen him somewhere before, but couldn't quite place it.

Adrian walked over to her side, also finding it strange. He told Assistant Parker to investigate this odd Christopher character, then asked Evelyn: "Do you know him?"

Evelyn watched Christopher's fleeing figure and shook her head, muttering: "Looks like a nutcase. Probably went crazy from coding too much."

With the matter settled, Evelyn had gained a favor and was in a good mood, ready to leave.

Adrian politely asked if she needed a ride home, which Evelyn ruthlessly declined.

"Your car is too ugly. I don't want to ride in it."

Adrian was speechless.

But Evelyn had only taken a few steps when she heard Assistant Parker ask Adrian behind her: "Mr. Morgan, are we heading to Cornell Estate for the party next?"

Cornell Estate? Evelyn paused, remembering something she'd heard from the campus beauty Isabelle—

Every year around Christmas, Molly and her mother would vacation there.

Which meant there was a good chance she'd run into the mother and daughter at this party?

Evelyn walked back to Adrian expressionlessly. "Oh, I've changed my mind about your car."

Adrian was speechless again.

Evelyn ended up getting in Adrian's car after all. Assistant Parker was especially happy, immediately offering her water and cookies once they got in, then receiving a sharp look from Adrian.

The subtext of that look was: Who's your boss here?

Assistant Parker immediately shrank back and quietly asked Evelyn: "Miss Grant, should I have the driver take you home first?"

"No need for the trouble. Just go straight to Cornell Estate." Evelyn's tone was casual. "I'm going there too. It's on the way."

"You're also going to Cornell Estate?" Adrian raised an eyebrow at Evelyn, his eyes full of curiosity.

Evelyn met his gaze calmly. "Is there a problem?"

Their unyielding stares clashed in the air, and the quiet car instantly filled with tension. Assistant Parker wished he could shrink his head into his neck. He silently turned to look at the equally silent driver and said quietly: "Drive. To Cornell Estate."

The car started, driving through the busy streets, but the interior remained quiet.

Adrian opened a contract and casually flipped through it, seemingly working, but asked in a seemingly offhand tone: "What is Miss Grant going to Cornell Estate for?"

Evelyn caught the probing in his tone but didn't dodge it, answering frankly: "To see some old acquaintances... I heard the gambling king's second daughter Molly will be there today too."

She changed the subject, probing Adrian in return: "Rumor has it the Morgans and Wrights don't get along, yet Mr. Morgan is accepting the Wrights' invitation today. Could the rumors be false?"

When he heard the word "Wright," Adrian's hand resting by the window instantly clenched, his slender knuckles turning white. Though he tried hard to control it, Evelyn still keenly caught the look that flashed through his eyes.

She just couldn't quite tell what kind of look it was - like anger, yet also like despair.

What exactly was going on between Adrian and the Wrights privately? Evelyn thought to herself.

The next second, Adrian suddenly leaned over, trapping her beneath him, his warm breath on her face as he said quietly: "Miss Grant seems very interested in the Wrights' second daughter... What's your relationship with the Wrights?"

Was he suspicious? Evelyn looked at him intently, not answering for a moment, thinking what a troublesome guy he was.

The atmosphere in the car was tense when suddenly there were three knocks on the window.

"Mr. Morgan, long time no see. Are you in there?" A gentle female voice came from outside the window.

A flash of irritation crossed Adrian's eyes, but he still returned to his seat and methodically straightened his wrinkled suit.

When the girl outside didn't get a response, she knocked gently on the window again. "Mr. Morgan, it's Isabelle. We met at my father's company."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow at the name and was turning to look out the window when she heard Adrian say coldly: "What are you waiting for? Drive."

As soon as he spoke, the driver floored it. The Maybach shot forward like an arrow, leaving behind a bewildered Isabelle, still bent over in her knocking position, her mouth open ready to speak but getting a mouthful of exhaust instead.
