Marked by Midnight

Reyna’s POV

I don’t know who moved first—him or me.
All I remember was the air between us shifting, thickening with heat and silence, the kind that makes you forget everything else but the weight of someone’s gaze. Draven was watching me like I was something rare—fragile and dangerous all at once.

His fingers brushed the side of my neck, feather-light, sending sparks down my spine. My skin tingled under his touch, like it already belonged to him. I wasn’t even sure where the courage came from, but I heard myself say it, steady and breathless:

“Then show me.”

A muscle in his jaw twitched. His eyes—those dark, ancient eyes—flickered with something I couldn’t place. Hunger, maybe. Longing. Pain.
And then he kissed me.

It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t wild or messy. It was slow—almost reverent. Like he’d been waiting centuries for this moment and didn’t want to ruin it. His lips moved over mine in soft, steady waves, deepening only when I reached up and tangled my fingers in the collar of his shirt, tugging him closer.

His scent wrapped around me—cedarwood, something smoky, something warm—and I breathed it in like oxygen. One of his hands slid down, tracing the curve of my waist, settling at the small of my back. He held me gently but firmly, like he was trying to memorize the shape of me through touch alone.

I shifted on the mattress, the sheets rustling beneath me as I leaned into him, chest to chest, heartbeat to heartbeat. My nightgown slipped slightly off one shoulder, and I felt his lips graze that newly exposed skin—once, twice—before his mouth found the hollow of my throat. The brush of his fangs sent a thrill through me. Not fear… but something else. Something deeper.

He paused there, breathing me in. I felt the restraint in his hands, the tension in his body. He wanted to lose control—but he didn’t. Not yet.

“You don’t know what you do to me,” he murmured against my skin, his voice like smoke and velvet. “Your scent… your heartbeat… it's like a flame under my skin.”

I swallowed, chest rising and falling quickly. “Then stop holding back.”

He lifted his head, looking down at me. The expression on his face made my breath catch. He looked torn—half-devoted, half-destroyed.

“If I touch you the way I want to,” he said lowly, “I don’t know if I’ll stop.”

“I don’t want you to stop.”

The silence that followed was heavy, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was charged. His thumb brushed over my cheekbone, then my jaw, then lower—tracing the edge of my collarbone where my skin was flushed and warm. I felt everything. Every movement. Every breath. The way his fingers explored so carefully, like I was precious. Breakable. Sacred.

His forehead touched mine. “I could ruin you.”

“You won’t,” I whispered. “You couldn’t.”

He dipped his head and kissed me again, this time slower. Deeper. His tongue moved against mine with deliberate care, and I responded without thought, arching into him, matching his rhythm, opening for him completely. When his hand slid under the hem of my nightgown, resting on my bare thigh, I didn’t flinch. I only exhaled.

The warmth of his palm against my skin made my stomach flutter. He moved slowly, letting his fingers skim higher, stopping just short of where I ached for him most. But that pause—that hesitation—was its own kind of torment. And pleasure.

“I’ve dreamed of this,” I told him quietly. “You, touching me like this… not as the monster they say you are. But as you.”

His breath caught. He pressed his lips to my temple, his voice hoarse. “And I’ve dreamed of you. But never like this. Not this close. Not this… real.”

He rolled us gently, his body above mine but still holding himself back, giving me space. His eyes flickered over me like he was trying to commit the moment to memory. I reached up, brushing the hair from his face. “Don’t hide from me, Draven. I want all of you. Even the dark.”

That broke something in him.

His mouth found mine again, deeper now, hungrier. But never rough. His hands mapped my body with reverence, his kisses searing down my neck, across my shoulder, leaving trails of heat in their wake. He was worshipping me—with touch, with breath, with patience. Like he was rewriting every story the world had told him about desire and trust and love.

And I let him.

Because I wasn’t afraid of him.
I was afraid of how much I needed him.
How much I already belonged to him—body, mind, and whatever else was still mine to give.

Draven’s fingers moved slowly, tracing soft circles on my thigh like he was afraid to break me. But I didn’t feel fragile in his touch. I felt powerful. Wanted. Cherished.

His eyes searched mine, still burning, but now there was something else behind the fire—something tender, something vulnerable. He didn’t speak, not yet. He didn’t have to. His silence said more than words ever could.

I lifted my hand and ran it down the side of his face, brushing over the edge of his sharp jaw, feeling the slight stubble that made him seem more human. More real. “You can touch me,” I whispered, voice low and a little shaky. “I trust you.”

He closed his eyes for a moment like my words did something to him—cut deep or soothed something raw. Maybe both. Then he leaned in again, pressing a soft kiss to the corner of my lips, then another at the hollow of my throat. Each one slower than the last. Each one stealing my breath.

“You feel like a dream,” he murmured, lips brushing my skin as he spoke. “But you’re not. You’re mine, aren’t you?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

His hand moved higher now, fingertips brushing along the inside of my thigh, teasing but never pushing too far. My breath hitched. He heard it, and the corners of his mouth twitched with the tiniest smile. He liked knowing he had that effect on me.

But he was still gentle, still patient.

“I don’t want to rush you,” he said softly, voice a low hum that settled in my chest. “I could stay like this… just touching you, holding you, hearing you breathe.”

I shivered. “I want more.”

He looked at me then, really looked—eyes locking with mine in a way that made everything else disappear. I felt seen. Not just for how I looked but for everything I was underneath. The broken pieces. The brave ones. All of it.

“I’ve never wanted anything more than this,” he said.

He shifted slightly, sliding beside me, his arm around my waist as he pulled me against his chest. The heat of his body soaked into mine. His hand stroked my back slowly, up and down, calming my racing heart.

“I need you to know something,” he whispered in my ear, his breath warm and sweet. “I might be darkness, Reyna. But with you… I feel like there’s light again. You don’t just wake up something in me. You heal it.”

My throat tightened, emotions rising so fast they almost spilled over. I buried my face in his chest, my fingers curling against his skin. “I don’t want to fix you, Draven,” I whispered. “I just want to be with you. However you are.”

He held me tighter, like that meant everything to him.

His lips found mine again—this time slower, deeper, like he was pouring everything into that kiss. Like he was marking the moment. Not with power or hunger… but with meaning.

And I kissed him back with all the feeling I had inside. The fear, the want, the trust. It was all in that kiss.

He didn’t touch me further that night. Not because he didn’t want to, but because he wanted me to know this wasn’t just about lust. It was more.

So we lay there—tangled together, skin to skin, hearts beating steady. And for the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel alone.

I felt chosen.
