The Darkness
The Darkness
Reyna’s POV
His fingers moved slowly across my arm, tracing the shape of my veins like they meant something. The fire had dimmed to a low flicker, shadows dancing on the stone walls. His skin was cool, but the way he held me—gentle yet commanding—kept me grounded, warm, strangely safe.
Draven’s body didn’t hum with the same heat as mine. His heartbeat was slow. Steady. So faint I had to strain to feel it beneath my palm where I rested my hand on his chest. It reminded me—he wasn’t like me. Not fully. Not at all.
And yet, I trusted him more than I’d trusted anyone in years.
Still, something tugged at me. A small, persistent ache in my chest. The way he’d stopped. The way he held back.
I tilted my head up to look at him. “Why didn’t you…?”
He didn’t answer at first. His gaze stayed fixed on the ceiling, jaw tight, the muscle there twitching ever so slightly. He knew what I meant.
“Don’t worry about it,” he said finally, low and almost dismissive.
But I didn’t let it slide.
“I am worrying about it,” I replied softly. “Was it me? Did I do something wrong?”
His head snapped toward me, sharp and immediate. “No,” he said, firmer now. “God, no. It’s not you.”
“Then what is it?”
A long silence stretched between us. The kind that makes your skin prickle.
He exhaled slowly through his nose. “My… tastes,” he began, choosing each word like it might cut, “are a little... intense.”
My brows drew together. “Intense?”
He looked away. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me.”
A flicker of something dark crossed his face. It wasn’t danger—it was restraint. Like he was keeping something caged, not because he feared it would hurt him, but because he feared it would hurt me.
He shifted on the bed, fingers pausing their trail against my skin.
“My sexual expression isn’t… soft,” he said at last. “It’s not something I can trust around someone who doesn’t fully understand it. Not yet. Maybe not ever.”
“What does that mean?” I whispered. “That you’d hurt me?”
“Yes.” His eyes snapped to mine. “Never intentionally or to make you sad , but I'd hurt you to bring me pleasure, to bring you pleasure too, i'm… I’m not used to gentle. I’m not made for soft edges and careful lines. I live in the shadows of craving and control, Reyna. What I want—it’s dark. Some people run from it. Others… break under it.”
I swallowed. My skin tingled with the weight of his words. But I didn’t feel fear. Just a deeper curiosity. A need to know him. All of him.
“So, you think I’d break?” I asked, eyes searching his.
I didn’t pull away from him. Instead, I tilted my face toward his hand, letting my lips brush against his palm as I whispered, “Then show me.” My voice trembled, not from fear—but from something deeper, a hunger I couldn’t explain. His hand stilled. His eyes—so dark, they almost looked endless—searched mine, like he was trying to read something buried inside me. “You think you’re ready,” he said, voice low, rough like gravel under silk. “But you haven’t seen what I become when I stop holding back.” The air felt heavier suddenly, like it was charged with invisible threads pulling us closer. I could feel his breath fan across my skin, slow and steady, but colder than mine. “Then let me see it,” I murmured, lifting my fingers to his chest, where his heart beat like a distant drum, slow and ancient. “I want to understand you, Draven. Even the parts you think I can’t handle.” He closed his eyes briefly, jaw clenched, like he was battling something within himself. “You want the light in me, Reyna, but I don’t come without shadow. I don’t make love like a fairytale. I take. I command. I break.” His voice dipped with something that made my stomach flip. But still, I didn’t flinch. I met his gaze and said softly, “Then teach me how not to break.
He looked pained for a second. “I think you’ve already seen enough of my darkness. You don’t need more.”
“But what if I want to?” I asked, voice barely above a whisper.
He reached out then, cupping my cheek. His thumb traced the edge of my lip, slow and lingering.
“You think you do,” he said softly. “But I won’t risk it. You don’t know what you’re asking for.”
“I’m not afraid of you.”
“You should be,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to mine.
I closed my eyes, letting myself feel the space between us—not physical, but emotional. He was holding something back, not because he didn’t want me… but because maybe he wanted me too much. In ways I hadn’t even begun to understand.
He pulled me closer, tucking me against his chest once more. I heard the faintest thrum of his heart beneath my ear—slow, ancient, restrained.
“I’ll give you what I can,” he murmured, “but not all of me. Not yet. Maybe never.”
And somehow, that made me want to know him even more.
His words lingered in the air, thick and unspoken, and for a moment, the silence between us was louder than anything he'd just confessed. I could feel the weight of it—his restraint, the storm he kept caged behind that calm exterior. And still, I wasn’t afraid. I leaned in, my voice barely above a whisper. “Draven… I’ve seen your darkness. I’ve felt it. It doesn’t scare me.” He opened his mouth like he wanted to argue, but I placed my hand over his chest again, feeling that slow, ancient thrum beneath my palm. “Whatever it is you’re holding back—I want to understand it. Not to fix you… just to know you.” His eyes darkened, burning with something primal, dangerous, and yet so achingly tender. “Reyna,” he said my name like it was a warning, like I was stepping too close to a line. “You think it’s just darkness. But it’s desire twisted by centuries of hunger. Control I can’t always promise. Needs that don’t fade with time… only sharpen.” My breath caught, but I didn’t retreat. Instead, I whispered, “Then don’t promise control. Just promise you won’t lie to me.” His jaw tensed, and for a second, I saw it—the part of him he fought so hard to hide. Not just the vampire. Not just the darkness. But the man who wanted, deeply and desperately… but was terrified of ruining what he touched.
