Chapter 38 38

Chapter 38 38
LUCIUS’S POV

People always forget that I wasnt tagged the mightiest King just for the sake of it. I was the mightiest.

My pack might the enormous, my council complex, but every single affair and movement around my pack, especially within my palace lies solely in my palm. From the guards' positions, warriors' training, down to even the simplest things as maids' quarters arrangement, you name it. They are all within my knowledge. Every ins and outs.

So imagine my shock when I found out someone, had not only tried, but succeeded in getting into the heart of my pack. My fucking palace.

There was no possible weakness to allow easy assessment into my abode, I made sure of that. So there was only one possible explanation.

We have a fucking mole in the palace. There was only one thing I hated much more than an enemy. An enemy with the facade of a friend, a disloyal coward. Treason is a sin that is simply not forgivable. I could never.

“How do you intend to fish out this mole?” Axel asked as he joined our council meeting. I had called on the elders and raised the matter in front of them. Not because I wasnt capable of taking care of it on my own, but mostly because I wanted to see their respective reactions, to figure out if the mole might be from the smaller circle before going for a bigger one.

“There is always a mistake in their movement. Betrayals are known to be clumsy. In a haste to cover their tracks, they might have left something behind. I will get my hand on that thing and that will be the end for them.” I responded, mostly focusing on the entire room rather than just him. He asked for them, not for himself. He already knew what needed to be done, but they don't and he wants me to tell them.

“Your Highness.” an elder jerked up. “We are faced with a different crisis since you brought back the girl. Is there a possibility of the girl being the major reason for it?”

“I told you once. And I am going to repeat again just in case you have forgotten, or have not heard in the first place. You all will not bring up the matter of my mate again, not here, not anywhere else. I do not want any of you to get involved in affairs that relate to her. We are discussing the possibility of a fucking mole in the pack. How the heck does that relate to her?”

My question was left hanging, no one dared to respond to it. No one but Axel.

“We should look into this from a logical place of view, emotions aside dear Alpha.” He said mockingly. “The attacker went directly for your mate. Is he here for her? Or does he just want to get to you through her? The answer to this question will determine where we pick our fight from.”

I squinted my questionable gaze at him. I don’t understand where he was going with his speech. Does he want to actually help out or is he trying to support the creaking council because he was still furious I intentionally refused to kill the attacker because of my mate? I couldn't tell right now.

“I have enemies, a part of me that has grown nourishingly well throughout the centuries. Anyone with a fairly sizable brain should be able to think this through. The palace was attacked in my absence, that is because they knew only then, could they easily get to my mate.”

“Right?” He nodded his head like he was thinking things through when in reality I knew he had already thought everything from the very beginning to how it could end. He didn't get famous around the world by just sitting in meetings and brainstorming with the rest of the group. He was an advanced strategist. No one can come even close to him when it comes to planning. “I guess we should focus more on getting the mole out then.”

“I guess we should.” I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at him and turn to face the rest of the council. “I will spell out the main reason why I called upon all of you tonight. I just want to make it clear and official in front of everybody that we have a mole roaming around within us. We are all aware of how deeply I despise those. I will work on getting to the culprit. That should be all.”

I looked from one face to another, trying to see if anyone had anything to say. Even if they do, no one dares to speak. “With nothing else to discuss, I can safely call off the meeting. If there is anything else to be discussed, Eldric will do well in passing the information.” I got up and walked out of the conference chamber without waiting to hear or see how anyone reacted to my speech.

Axel and Eldric followed behind me, already bombarding me with questions.

“Are you going to launch a search party to locate the mole? How are you going to do it?”

The two questions that stand out to me from Eldric and Axel respectively.

“I already know who the fucking mole is. I just need to make some confirmations.”

“Of course you fucking do.” Axel rolled his eyes. “You are just never clueless. For a minute there I was beginning to lose my fucking faith in you. I thought being smitten might have changed your brain functioning pattern”

“I am going to take that as a compliment.” I deadpanned, staring straight into his eyes.

He rolled his eyes and nudged me forward. “You know who the fucking mole is, let’s get going, I don't know what you are waiting for.”

“You.” I pointed at his head. “Are you going to stay away from me for a few hours. I want to be alone with her. And you..” I pointed at Eldric. “Are you going to get me the maid that was assigned to take food daily to my mate?” I just cannot believe she thinks she will get away with this.”

“You are no fun.” Axel sighed and moved away.
