Sixty Two
Anya
It’s been days. People were talking. Some said they were dead. Others said they were captured. Some didn’t even care. Some like Vallore. I know he had something to do with this but I couldn’t prove it.
The sun was high up in the sky. Hot yet cool because of the breeze. Half of the activities in the pack have been on hold since their alpha. My brother and his twin went missing. I have sent out search parties to look for them all to no avail. Each night I went out on my own, still nothing. I was beginning to lose hope. But I won't stop searching. My brothers would do the same if it were me.
As I marched down towards the council room I thought of Lyra and if she had been found by my brothers and if they were together. I hope that was true.
“It’s time to choose a new one already” Vallore's voice. That snake.
“Choose a new what?” All eyes and stares were directed at me as soon as I entered the chamber.
Vallore stood before the council members. Usually, he sat down because he was a member of the council, but it looked like he had a lot to say, which was why he was addressing them from below.
“You don’t have any right to question a member of the council”
I snorted. “Just because I stayed out of ruling business doesn’t mean I don’t have the right. As of now I am the last heir. Until my brothers return I see that you regard me with respect”
“Nonsense. You’re a woman. You will never be heir” one of the councilmen spat out and I smiled.
It just dawned on me why Vallore never paid any attention to me. He thought I was useless. Too bad.
I walked further into the room like it was the most natural thing to do “Being a woman is not the issue here is it?” I glared at the councilman that just spoke.
He looked irritated and ready to pop. What was his problem? “Yes. A woman cannot lead. And your brothers lost the rights to be called heirs the moment they set out to find that girl”
“You mean your Luna?” Rage bait. Something I learned as a kid. My brothers hated me because of that. Another councilman sprang up from his seat in anger.
“I shall have you escorted out if you don’t think before you speak”
“I shall remind you that everything here belongs to my family and until it is confirmed that my brothers are dead there shall be no picking any new alpha” I said that part glaring at Vallore.
To think I loved him when we were kids. My brothers warned me but I never listened. He was nice to me until he wasn’t. He was behind all this. I just needed to find a way to prove it. Until then I need to keep him off the position. He would never become alpha. Not while I lived.
“The girl is right, you know” Councilman Theodore said. He was the only council member I bothered to learn the name of. Well asides my uncle. He was the most rational amongst them all.
“Don’t start with this nonsense Theodore. Vallore already confirmed they were dead. What more do you want?”
He confirmed they were dead? I turned to face Vallore. I wasn’t scared of him one bit and he knew. “Where did you confirm this?” I yelled at him and he rolled his eyes.
“I can’t remember. But I-“
“Evidence?! I need it now!”
“Silly girl. Don’t go acting like your brothers now! Or you’ll get yourself killed” he was in my face. His voice lowered and was threatening.
Smiling, I poked his chest. “You will never be alpha long as I live….” I turned to face the councilmembers “…..I came to inform you all that I plan to head out to the forest again to find my brothers and I will be taking a few guards with me”
Murmurs broke out and arguments broke out. I didn’t have to stand and listen to them talk but I loved the chaos. Vallore had gone back up to his council seat. He was glaring at me from where he sat so I winked and blew him a little kiss. Like I said ragebait.
“This is all your fault you know” Old news.
“Tell me something I didn’t know” I rolled my eyes.
I have had Lucy and Camille corner me countless times since Kade and Kael went missing. They mocked me for having been the one who brought in Lyra. “If you had just left her to die none of these would be happening”
“You should have died with her”
“You should have died with your parents”
I wasn’t in the slightest bit hurt by their words because I won’t lie I thought about it too. I don’t regret finding and saving Lyra. I never would. I just wish things were different.
“Your brothers never listened. And the end came for them both. Be careful now Anya. Like you said. You are the last living member of your family I-“
“My brothers are not dead. I will return with them” I interjected. They were pissing me off now.
“Until you return then. If you return empty-handed we shall hand over the title to your uncle and the next living member”
I glared at Vallore who was grinning. I smiled. There were always so many ways to break his ego.
“If I come back empty-handed. I’d get married” everywhere went silent. Vallore got up in a flash. His chest rose and fell as anger filled his soul. Good.
I turned to walk away. There was no need for context. If I got married my husband will become alpha not Vallore. Never thought of finding my mate but if I had to. I would.
As I walked through the corridors people stared. Never bothered me. All that filled my mind was finding Anna. She was the key to all this. If I find Anna I could expose Vallore and hopefully my brothers and Lyra are still alive.
