Chapter Thirty-Nine: Trust Falls
Sophie's POV
The headlights of the Beta's car cut through the darkness ahead. My fingers were still interlocked with Marcus's as we approached, his warm grip steady and reassuring in a way I wasn't ready to examine too closely. After everything that had just happened, something had definitely shifted between us.
"Perimeter secured, sir." the Beta reported crisply as we approached. "Cleanup teams deployed. No pursuit detected." His eyes flickered briefly to where Marcus's hand had dropped from mine, but he kept his expression professionally neutral.
Adam immediately sprawled into the front passenger seat, I hesitated for a split second before sliding into the back beside Marcus, hyper-aware of how he released my hand only long enough to help me into the seat before settling next to me. The leather was cool against my bare skin, making me acutely aware of how much of Victoria's carefully chosen dress had been shredded during our escape. Between the forest run and river crossing, I looked like some B-movie horror victim. Hard to believe just hours ago I'd been strutting around feeling like a queen.
The car pulled away smoothly, tires crunching on gravel before finding pavement. Marcus maintained his vigilant watch of the passing shadows, the protective energy still radiating from him. For the first time since this whole nightmare began, I found myself wanting to lean into that protection rather than fight it.
My feet were killing me from running barefoot through the woods, but that pain felt distant compared to the chaos still raging in my mind. A violent shiver ran through me as the adrenaline started to fade. My wet clothes clung uncomfortably, and my teeth actually started chattering. The fear and cold and emotional confusion were finally catching up, leaving me trembling like a leaf in a storm.
"Are you hurt?" Marcus's question came pitched low enough that only I could hear. His focus zeroed in on me with an intensity that made my breath catch.
"F-freezing," I managed through chattering teeth. "But intact."
He shifted closer without hesitation, his body heat immediately warming my side. The gesture seemed almost unconscious, like he wasn't even aware he was doing it. That's when I spotted the crimson stain spreading across his shoulder.
"You're bleeding!" The words came out sharp with panic. Even in the dim light, I could see another bullet wound in his shoulder still seeping blood. My fingers itched to reach out and touch him, to verify for myself that he was really okay - the same instinct that had made me run back toward gunfire rather than leave him behind.
"It's nothing. Just a graze." He dismissed it with a shrug, though I caught him hiding a wince. "Werewolf healing, remember?"
"Nothing?" My voice cracked with hysteria. "You got shot!"
Adam's harsh laugh from the front seat shattered the moment. "Jesus, princess. It's like you've never seen a little blood before. Did you think being part of our world would be all fancy parties and designer dresses?"
"Fuck you," I snapped, my frayed nerves finally giving way to anger. "Some of us aren't used to getting shot at during family parties!"
"Better get used to it." Adam's smirk was visible in the rearview mirror. "This is your life now."
The reality of his words hit me like a physical blow. This was my life now. Gun battles and assassins and blood. No more quiet study sessions or normal birthday parties. No more pretending I could ever go back to being just Sophie the psychology student.
"This is all your fault!" I rounded on Adam, tears burning in my eyes. "If I'd never met you, if you hadn't..." My voice cracked embarrassingly. "I should be working on my thesis right now, not running from people trying to kill me!"
"Sophie." Marcus's voice carried a warning, but I was too far gone.
"And you!" I whirled toward him, and weeks of suppressed anger finally boiled over. "Dragging me into this life, you don't give a damn about what I think, I'm just another asset for your pack reign!" The tears were falling freely now.
"Just... just let me go. Please." My voice cracked on the plea, raw with desperate hope. After everything we'd just been through together, after seeing that other side of him in the forest... maybe, just maybe...
The silence that followed felt endless. When Marcus finally spoke, his voice held none of the warmth from earlier.
"You know I can't do that."
Something inside me shattered. The sobs came harder now, my whole body shaking with them. The man who'd held my hand, who'd looked at me with something like tenderness, vanished behind the Alpha's mask. All that careful control snapped back into place, reminding me exactly what this was: a prison, not a protection. Through my tears, I caught a flash expression cross Marcus's face - something that looked almost like guilt before his features hardened back into that familiar indifference.
The rest of the drive passed in crushing silence. I pressed myself against the door, as far from both men as possible, watching the familiar streets blur past. Each mile took me further from any chance at a normal life. My throat felt raw from crying, and exhaustion pulled at every muscle.
When we finally pulled up to the mansion, I was surprised to see every light blazing. The usual guards had been doubled, their hands never far from their weapons. Several black SUVs identical to ours were parked in the circular drive.
But what really caught me off guard was the figure standing at the top of the front steps.
"Victoria?" I breathed, not quite believing my eyes.
