Chapter Thirty-Eight: His Hand in Mine

Sophie's POV

I watched Marcus stagger from the bullet's impact. I tried to bolt back toward him without thinking, but Adam's iron grip locked around my arm.

"Have you lost your fucking mind?!" He yanked me back so hard I nearly fell. "He ordered us to run!"

"They shot him!" I struggled against his hold, watching helplessly as Marcus recovered and lunged at another attacker.

"How can you just abandon him?" I demanded, still fighting Adam's grip. "He's your father!"

"And he's also a fucking Alpha!" Adam snarled. "He's handled worse. It'll take more than a few bullets to bring him down!"

"Let. Me. Go!" Each word came out as a snarl. I could feel my wolf stirring inside me, strengthening my struggles. When Adam's grip loosened for just a second, I wrenched free and ran.

"Sophie, stop!" Adam's footsteps pounded behind me, but I ignored him. My bare feet barely registered the pain from rocks and twigs as I sprinted back toward the gunfire. Every instinct screamed to go back and help him somehow.

Then my heel caught on an exposed root. The world tilted sideways as I went down hard, the impact driving the air from my lungs. Pain shot through my ankle as I tried to scramble up.

A deafening howl split the night. My head snapped up just in time to see a massive black shape explode through the underbrush. Those golden eyes locked onto mine with frightening intelligence.

Before I could move, he was there. One powerful motion and I found myself sprawled across his broad back, fingers instinctively tangling in that thick fur. The texture shocked me - impossibly soft despite the solid muscle underneath.

"Hold on." Marcus's voice resonated directly in my mind, making me gasp. I'd heard other wolves could communicate mentally in their animal forms, but experiencing it firsthand was trippy as hell.

Then we were moving. Marcus's powerful strides ate up the ground as he wove through the trees with impossible agility. My thighs clenched around his ribcage, face pressed into his fur as branches whipped past.

The sound of pursuit grew fainter as Marcus's superior speed and knowledge of the terrain worked in our favor. We crossed two streams, his sure-footed grace never faltering even with my added weight.

The rush of water grew louder until we burst out of the trees beside a river. Without hesitation, Marcus plunged in. The shock of icy water made me yelp, but his powerful muscles never faltered as he fought the current.

By the time we reached the other bank, the sounds of fighting had faded completely. Marcus carried me a bit further before finally slowing to a stop in a small clearing.

I slid off his back on shaky legs, my fingers reluctantly leaving his fur. The shift was mesmerizing - muscle and bone shifting with savage precision until Marcus stood before me, water running down his bare chest. Even soaked, he somehow managed to look powerful. Dangerous. And way too fucking distracting with those torn suit pants clinging to...

Focus, Sophie. Focus.

"Dad?" Adam emerged from the trees, somehow managing to look only slightly disheveled despite our mad dash through the forest. "Are you alright?"

My eyes fixed on Marcus's shoulder where the bullet had grazed him. The wound was already closing, accelerated werewolf healing doing its thing, but seeing his blood still made my stomach clench.

"Contact the Beta," Marcus ordered, his voice rough from the shift. He rolled his injured shoulder experimentally. "Tell him to meet us at pickup point three."

While Adam made the call, I found myself cataloging Marcus's other injuries - mostly shallow cuts and bruises that were already fading. My fingers itched to trace them, to verify for myself that he was really okay. The intensity of my concern should have scared me. Instead, it felt... right?

"It's healing fine," Marcus said quietly, catching my worried looks. "Barely a scratch."

"You shouldn't have come back for me." His words came out softer than I intended. His eyes locked onto mine, molten gold fading back to black but no less intense. "And you shouldn't have run back into gunfire."

"I couldn't just..." I trailed off, not sure how to explain the panic I'd felt seeing him wounded. The way my chest had seized up at the thought of leaving him behind.

Something flickered in his expression - surprise? Wonder? Before he could respond, Adam interrupted.

"Beta's close. Two minutes out." He tucked his phone away, glancing between us with an unreadable expression. "We should move."

Marcus nodded, then did something that made my breath catch - he took my hand. Not roughly like when he'd dragged me away from the party, but something gentler. Almost... tender? His fingers threaded through mine like they belonged there.

"The woods aren't safe yet," he murmured, thumb brushing over my knuckles. "Stay close."

We started walking, and holy shit, this was not helping my confusion. Every casual stroke of his thumb sent electricity up my arm. The contrast of his calloused palm against mine felt impossibly intimate.

The night air was cold after our river crossing, making me shiver in my wet clothes. Without a word, Marcus drew me closer, his body heat warming my side. The casual possessiveness of the gesture should have pissed me off. Instead, I found myself leaning into him, hyper-aware of every point of contact - the solid warmth of his chest, the steady rise and fall of his breathing, that inexplicable spark of connection that had nothing to do with scents I couldn't smell.

"The pickup point's just ahead," he said softly, leading me around a fallen tree. His grip tightened slightly when I stumbled on the uneven ground. "Careful."

I couldn't help noticing how he focused entirely on steadying me while basically ignoring Adam's obvious limp. The same son he'd been so desperate to protect earlier was now an afterthought. What had changed?

The forest thinned out ahead, revealing the faint glow of headlights. Marcus slowed our pace, every line of his body alert as he scanned the surroundings. Even now, he positioned himself between me and potential threats.

"Beta's got a secure perimeter set up," Adam reported from behind us. "Car's waiting."

I expected Marcus to release my hand as we approached the lights. Instead, his grip remained steady, almost like he was reluctant to let go. Like this point of contact between us meant something to him too.

The understanding crashed over me like a tidal wave - somewhere between the party and this moment, everything had shifted. The man beside me wasn't just my captor anymore. Not just the dangerous Alpha who forced me. He was something more complicated -

My protector. My anchor in the storm.
