Chapter 47 Chapter 16.2
I was happy spending my days with my family, but I couldn’t help missing Desmond. The house was always noisy every day, but whenever they knew I was still asleep, they stayed quiet so they wouldn’t wake me. They also cooked delicious meals for me.
“You should stay here all the time, Heaven, so we can eat delicious food every day,” Randy joked, and I just laughed.
“Do you want Desmond scolding us for neglecting your sister? He left money with me for her allowance while she’s staying with us,” Mom scolded him. I could only laugh at them.
I always felt a bit embarrassed toward Desmond’s family, but they were the reason our life had gotten better. They were the ones paying for my siblings’ schooling, and I was earning a good salary at their company. Dad also worked for one of the Velasquez businesses.
I never dreamed of marrying into a rich family, but that’s what fate gave me.
I wanted to help Mom clean the house, but she wouldn’t let me, so I ended up sitting in the living room watching TV. My siblings were in school, and Dad was at work, so I had no one to talk to.
While I was watching, I felt sleepy, so I lay on our old sofa. I didn’t even realize I’d fallen asleep. When I woke up, it was already lunch break. My siblings were quietly eating in the kitchen. The school was close, so they came home for lunch.
“Heaven, you’re awake! Come eat with us,” Anica called. I got up. Lately my body felt so heavy. My belly was already five months along, so we still had four more months before the baby came. I was excited to see and hold my little one.
I sat down beside Mom. Dad wasn’t home since his workplace was far.
“Are you okay, Heaven?” Randy asked—but before I could answer, I suddenly threw up. I ran to the bathroom, but the food was already in my hands.
I kept vomiting into the bowl, almost losing all my strength. I wanted to stop, but my stomach kept rising and rising.
“That’s normal for a pregnant woman. Just endure it,” Mom said as she rubbed my back. When I was done, I stood up, washed my face, and rinsed my mouth. It felt like I threw up everything I had eaten that morning.
“Do you feel better now?” Mom asked. I just nodded since I couldn’t speak yet.
“Do you still throw up often?” she asked again.
“Just today, Mom. I probably ate too much this morning,” I answered. When I felt okay again, I went back to the kitchen. My siblings all looked at me.
“Are you okay? Is there any food smell you don’t like? I’ll remove it,” Anica said.
I shook my head. There was nothing I smelled that bothered me. The food just suddenly rose in my stomach.
“Eat plenty so you won’t get hungry. I don’t want Desmond thinking we’re not taking care of you,” Mom said as she put rice and food on my plate.
“Desmond won’t get mad, Mom. He knows you’re taking good care of me,” I replied.
Why was she always so worried about what Desmond would think?
“How are things between the two of you? Tell me, was everything you showed us when he dropped you off just acting? I still worry since you two don’t love each other. He’s not hurting you, right? He’s not bringing other women home, right?” Mom asked with obvious concern.
“Mom, Desmond is kind. He’s not doing any of those things. He takes care of me, and we’re trying to make our relationship work,” I answered so she wouldn’t worry.
“Do you love each other now?”
My eyes widened at her question. She was clearly teasing, and my siblings burst into laughter.
“I’m telling you, Mom, Heaven already likes Desmond. Her cheeks were red when he kissed her in front of us,” Anica added, teasing me.
“That’s because I was embarrassed! I didn’t expect him to do that in front of you!” I snapped, but they just kept laughing. I could only shake my head.
The days passed with the same routine. I wanted to see Desmond already, but I still had to wait two more days before he came home. We couldn’t talk even on the phone because of the time difference.
I slept a lot, day or night, always feeling sleepy even when I had just woken up. Time passed quickly. I was excited to see Desmond again, but I was still so sleepy. He was coming home at night, so I spent the whole day sleeping. I didn’t have much appetite either.
When I woke up, I stared blankly at the underside of the double-decker bed. I feel like I'm not myself yet.
“You’re awake?” I turned my head. My senses seemed to instantly wake up when I saw Desmond. I smiled, but I just stared at him for a moment.
“I thought you were coming home tonight?” I asked. He nodded.
“Looks like you had a long nap today, huh? It’s already seven in the evening,” he said. I quickly grabbed my phone to check the time. He wasn’t joking.
I sat up and looked at him. I missed his face. I missed him. I wanted to hug him, but I felt shy.
He came closer and hugged me. I smiled secretly. I missed his scent. His hugs felt so good.
“Let’s go home,” he murmured sweetly. I nodded.
We ate dinner with my family first before we prepared to leave. Dad helped load my things into the car again.
When we got home, Desmond went straight to the shower to wash up. I sat on the bed and scrolled through social media.
“Mom said you barely leave your room. You’re not getting any exercise anymore. Are you okay?” he asked as he dried his wet hair.
“I’m just too lazy to go out, and I feel sleepy all the time,” I answered while still looking at my phone. I looked up when he suddenly took my phone from me.
“I miss you,” he whispered softly.
I swallowed. I didn’t know how to respond.
