Chapter 348 The Process of Love Will Not Change
Penny froze on the spot when she heard this.
She watched as Dahlia walked up to Bernard. Bernard said to Dahlia, "Don't mention it. I put you on the sofa last night and went home. Were you okay afterwards? I was worried you'd catch a cold sleeping on the sofa."
"How could that be? I actually woke up feeling hot later. The windows weren't open, so it was too stuffy."
The two of them laughed together.
Dahlia continued, "Dr. Lewis, are you going to eat now? I'm heading there too. Want to go together?"
"Sure." Bernard didn't refuse.
They headed down the stairs while Penny stood there in a daze.
Her heart ached, yet she felt lost.
Two voices battled in her mind. One said: Go, win Bernard back. Tell him you regret it, that from now on you'll definitely respect his parents and be a good wife.
But another voice said: Don't go. You're not ready to be a good wife yet. If you give in now and can't follow through later, then it'll be your fault.
Penny watched them go downstairs, then saw them leave through the hospital entrance.
They weren't going to the cafeteria—they were going out to eat.
Her heart felt like it was being cut by a knife.
......
That whole evening, Penny was distracted. She kept wondering where Bernard and Dahlia had gone.
Were the two of them going to a bar?
She kept checking Facebook.
Bernard had only posted a few times on Facebook during the period when he was pursuing her. Otherwise, he rarely posted.
She didn't have Dahlia's WhatsApp either, so she had no idea what they were doing.
At 11 PM, as soon as she got off work, she rushed toward the small apartment.
If Bernard and Dahlia had just gone for a meal, he should be home by now.
However, as she drove past a bar, she happened to glance over and spotted Bernard and Dahlia sitting by the window, drinking and chatting, looking very happy together.
Penny was stunned.
Without thinking, she pulled into the parking lot ahead, then found herself walking into the bar as if possessed.
She was raised quite strictly—her parents didn't allow her to go to places like this, so once inside, she felt completely out of place.
The server could tell it was her first time at a bar and came over to ask, "Miss, are you here for drinks?"
She nodded and asked nervously, "I'm just here to sit. Do you have a minimum charge?"
"No. If you're alone, you can sit over here."
"Okay." Penny was both nervous and afraid Bernard would see her, so she walked with her head down.
Suddenly, she bumped into someone's belly.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" She looked up to see a chubby young man in front of her.
Chamberlain squinted as he looked Penny over.
This was clearly an innocent young girl—just look at how awkward she seemed. Definitely her first time at a bar.
"It's fine, I don't blame you." Chamberlain said with a smile.
Seeing he wasn't upset, Penny followed the server to a secluded spot.
Chamberlain sat at the bar, glancing at Penny from time to time.
First, he paid extra attention to girls visiting bars for the first time, worried they might be tricked or lured away by some of the jerks there.
Second, he liked innocent-looking girls.
It's just that the girls he'd pursued before all thought he was too fat. The ones who didn't mind his weight were only after his money, which is why he was still single.
Chamberlain watched Penny for a while and noticed she kept staring at a table up ahead.
He immediately understood—this girl had someone she liked, and that person was chatting enthusiastically with another girl. She was clearly upset but didn't want to interrupt.
Chamberlain moved to a seat near Bernard, pretending to drink casually while listening to their conversation.
Well, they were talking about pretty ordinary things, like "Have you been to the capital? What do you think of people from Cloud Town? Have you ever been to the beach?" That kind of thing.
But wasn't this how men and women always started getting closer?
After listening for half an hour, Chamberlain walked over to Penny.
Though Penny had ordered a drink, she hadn't touched it. Instead, she was drinking the glass of water on the table.
A very cautious girl.
He sat down in front of her.
Penny immediately became alert.
"Don't worry, I'm not a bad guy," Chamberlain said.
Penny looked at him—when he smiled, his eyes narrowed to slits, he had a big belly, wore a thick gold chain. He definitely looked like a bad guy.
"I... I'm leaving." Penny was about to leave, but Chamberlain quickly stopped her. "I know what they're talking about."
"Wh... what?"
Chamberlain smiled. "You came in to hear what that couple at the front table is talking about, right? I can tell you."
Penny sat back down.
"So... what did they talk about?"
Chamberlain told her everything he'd heard.
Penny couldn't help but gasp. Weren't they talking about the same things she and Bernard had discussed when they were in love?
The process of dating really was the same for everyone—no one was exempt.
After her heart ached for a moment, she asked Chamberlain, "So do you think they have a chance together?"
"Why wouldn't they? If things keep going like this, of course they have a chance. Love these days comes and goes so easily—it can't stand the test."
Penny's eyes dimmed. "Yeah, it can't stand the test. It's all my fault."
"How is it your fault? When a relationship doesn't work out, both sides have problems. It's either from within themselves or from their families. Even married people get divorced—look at how high the divorce rate is now. Even people in love don't necessarily make it to the end."
Hearing that last sentence, Penny said, "Yeah, there really are very few couples who stay together until old age after marriage."
"Among those who don't divorce, many have one person sacrificing, you know? But nowadays, everyone thinks they're a princess or prince—who wants to put up with that, right?"
Penny nodded. "You're right, but I need to go."
She was grateful for Chamberlain's perspective, but she still felt he wasn't an honest person. Hanging out at bars, being overweight, wearing a big gold chain—they weren't the same kind of people.
Besides, Bernard and Dahlia were chatting happily up front, which upset her. But if she sat here chatting with a stranger, would that make her any better?
She decided to go say hello to Bernard.
No matter what, they couldn't keep going on like this.
Penny walked up to Bernard and called out, "Bernard."
The two people who had been chatting looked up at her.
