Chapter 349 The Reason for Being Unable to Have Children
Chapter 349 The Reason for Being Unable to Have Children
Penny had originally expected Bernard to be nervous and guilty, offering some explanation as to why he and Dahlia were at the bar together—just like in all those TV shows and novels.
But no.
His eyes showed indifference, as if to say, 'think whatever you want, I don't care.'
Penny was stung by that look. She had felt so justified before, but now she felt like she was the one who didn't belong.
She forced out a smile. "I was passing by after work and saw you two here."
Bernard asked, "So?"
Tears immediately streamed down her face, and Dahlia watched her with schadenfreude, silently mocking her.
"Well, I won't disturb you then." Penny ran out crying.
At the door, she bumped into Chamberlain's belly again. She didn't care and just cried as she jumped into her little car and drove home.
That night, Chamberlain posted on Facebook: [Ran into a little crying cat.]
Those who knew him would understand.
Those who didn't would ask: Where's the cat?
Matilda also liked his post.
She always checked Facebook before bed anyway, and would like any post from people she knew.
Matilda put down her phone and looked at Wentworth beside her.
"Still not sleeping?"
"In a minute." Wentworth was a dedicated person who pored over documents even before bed.
Officials had too much to deal with. Even if there was a magnitude two earthquake, five hundred miles away, in the middle of the night, he had to rush over there, then read all kinds of endless reports.
Not only did he have to work, but he also had to remain vigilant against all sorts of scheming. Like that Victoria, who had been eyeing him lately, wanting to catch him off guard.
Wentworth decided to strike first. Once Victoria made any mistake at work, he would have her removed from her position.
Finally, he finished his work.
He lay down and held Matilda.
"Wentworth, when are we moving? The villa has not only been renovated but has been aired out for a while now. I checked the formaldehyde levels yesterday, and they're at their lowest. Moving in won't be harmful anymore."
Wentworth said, "Then let's pick a good day and find a moving company."
Matilda sighed, "I really hate to leave the ladies here."
"Then should we not move?" he gently asked.
"No, you're not part of this community anymore. If we keep living here, people will have opinions." She kissed him and added, "When we move, we should invite friends over for a housewarming."
"No problem," he agreed. "We can find a good restaurant and have them deliver the food. We don't need to cook ourselves."
"That's what I was thinking too. But I think we should invite friends in batches—one group from my side, one from yours, so people who don't know each other won't feel awkward," she suggested.
"Sounds good."
After discussing it, Matilda snuggled closer into his arms.
Wentworth felt his body heat up, but he held back.
Mainly because he had an early meeting tomorrow, and Matilda had to work too. He was worried it would affect their energy.
In the darkness, Matilda suddenly said, "Britney got a 4D ultrasound today. The baby looks so beautiful."
Wentworth asked, "You can see what the baby looks like even in the belly?"
"Pretty much," she replied.
Wentworth was silent for a moment, then asked her, "You want to have a baby too, don't you?"
"Don't you?" she asked him.
"I..." He thought for a moment, then said, "Then let's go get a physical checkup sometime and see if there's a problem."
"Okay." Matilda had wanted to do this for a long time but couldn't bring herself to ask him.
What if he found out it was his problem? What would happen then?
"How about we make an appointment? This Sunday?" she proposed.
Matilda knew he didn't have meetings on Sundays, and if there were no emergencies, he should be able to make time.
Wentworth said it was no problem.
……
On Sunday, they left early in the morning.
To protect their privacy, they didn't go to the military hospital but went to the city center hospital instead. Matilda had already made an appointment online, and after waiting for about ten minutes, they were called in for their check-up.
Matilda didn't tell Wentworth that she had already been checked, and he had never suspected there could be a problem with him. So when the results came out, the doctor looked at Wentworth and asked, "Sir, what do you do for work?"
Wentworth said, "I used to be in the military."
"Have you had any serious injuries?"
"Yes, I've been injured and poisoned," he answered.
The doctor said, "No wonder. After the examination, we found that you..."
The doctor was probably intimidated by Wentworth's presence, so he didn't speak directly. He just picked up a stapler from the desk, took out the staples, and said to Wentworth, "Look at this stapler. It's not broken and can still be used, but there are no staples inside."
Wentworth said bluntly, "Without staples, how can it be used? Your example doesn't make sense."
"Let me use another example," the doctor quicky added. "I put staples in, but they might be defective. Even though you have staples and the stapler works, for the paper, it's doing nothing useful."
Wentworth said with an exasperated tone, "Just use professional terms to explain it."
"From a professional standpoint, you've been injured too many times in the past, which may have damaged the fundamentals and affected your hormones. But it's not untreatable," the doctor explained.
Matilda asked, "How do we treat it?"
The doctor said, "If you want to restore the stapler's function, you need good staples. If you just want to have a child, we can find the best staple from this batch of defective ones and do artificial insemination."
Matilda had no more questions. She had already done her research. Now it was up to Wentworth to decide.
Wentworth hadn't recovered yet. He couldn't accept this reality at all.
"Doctor, let us go back and discuss it. We'll come back to you once we've decided."
"Okay, our department is the best fertility clinic in Cloud Town. You'll definitely come back to me." The doctor was very confident.
Matilda and Wentworth left the hospital and found a restaurant to eat.
Wentworth didn't speak the whole time and occasionally laughed at himself.
He had always thought the issue lay with Matilda and had been careful not to pressure her or stress her out. He never expected the problem was with him.
Seeing him like this, Matilda felt bad too.
"Wentworth..." Matilda held his hand.
He held her hand back, then murmured, "I feel like such a joke right now."
"Don't say that. You've always been the best man in my eyes," she reassured him.
"But I can't get you pregnant," he said bitterly.
"That's not true. If we treat it properly, we can still get pregnant," Matilda said. Then she added with a gentle smile, "And even if we don't have kids, we can always get a dog."
Wentworth laughed at himself again. "I don't like dogs. I like children."
"Then... then let's get treatment?" she asked quietly.
"Let's do it," Wentworth said resolutely.
He wasn't too proud. If there was a problem, it needed to be treated.
"I'll send these documents to my brother in a bit and have him find me a doctor. He'll definitely find the best doctor in the world."
