Jay Lee’s POV
The faces of the two kidnappers looked calm, and as if they had committed no crime. The man laughed widely as he said, “We know nothing. It’s useless for you to interrogate us because we don’t know or recognize these two kids. And why did we kidnap them for? Do you have any evidence?”
They were smart, and they must have had a plan. The police would have a hard time getting them to confess. What should I do? When I looked over, I saw Piper was looking at the two kidnappers seriously. She was listening intently to all the conversations going on in the investigation room. And I felt sad to see her. If this investigation was a dead end and they were free, then all our efforts were back to zero. Even though their faces were caught on CCTV cameras, there was no evidence showing them forcing the twins into the car. And after that, there was no footage of their activities.
“Jay, please investigate their backgrounds. I’m sure we’ll find something,” Piper said.
Ah, Piper was right. I had to hurry and ask Nick to find out about the two kidnappers.
I hurriedly took photos of the two kidnappers’ faces and sent them to Nick.
“I’ve sent Nick a message. Hopefully, Nick will do this task quickly. Take it easy and also believe the twins will be fine,” I said, trying to calm her down.
“Yes,” she replied shortly.
“Jay, who’s that guy?” Piper asked as she pointed to a man in a black suit and glasses. His appearance was super neat and his demeanor seemed arrogant. I thought I’d ever seen that guy somewhere, but where?
“I don’t know, but I feel like I’ve met him somewhere,” I replied.
It turned out that the man was the lawyer for the two kidnappers. But who sent that man? There must be someone powerful behind the lawyer.
“Which law firm was he from, Jay?” Piper asked.
“I forget. But, I’m familiar with his face. Let’s just listen to his defense for his client,” I replied.
In the middle of the investigation session, the police showed the convenience store’s CCTV footage. The man’s face was seen in the car, beside which sat the woman. They didn’t look panicked or nervous at all. When the footage of the twins getting into their car, they were not afraid at all, rather they were good at being evasive and making a lot of excuses.
The two kidnappers argued the twins were asking for a ride and asked to be dropped off at the side of the road that led to the ice cream shop. Unfortunately, there was no CCTV in the area leading to the highway, making it difficult for the police and the kidnappers to prove their alibi. However, the two kidnappers remained adamant that they were innocent, as the twins’ faces were not frightened or under threat. The twins were indeed seen getting into the car voluntarily. The case would go back to zero.
Finally, after two hours of investigation, the lawyer of the two kidnappers asked the police to release his clients on bail and he also guaranteed that his clients would not run away from Valdirra. And even the lawyer said that when the police were about to detain their car, they immediately fled because they were afraid and panicked by many police cars. They were good at making excuses. They could answer almost all the police questions and their answers sounded natural.
“Jay, this is bad. The police should release them because there is no evidence. What should we do?” Piper asked.
“We wait for the results of Nick’s investigation. Let’s go see Tom and I think that’s enough for today. I’m sure we’ll find some clues,” I replied as I took Piper’s hand.
We exited the secret room and Tom came toward us. I could tell by the look on his face what he was about to tell us. Once in front of me, Tom let out a quick breath and shook his head a few times.
“Sorry, Jay. Trust me, we’ll try harder,” Tom said.
“It’s not your fault. It’s theirs,” I said. Suddenly, the three of us looked at the two kidnappers coming out with their lawyer. The three of them smiled happily. However, I would make sure that smile would soon disappear from their lips.
After they disappeared, I hurried to say goodbye to Tom and take Piper home. Ken was waiting for us in the parking lot. Along the way, none of us spoke. We were all silent and deep in thought.
Nick, I’m counting on you!
Piper’s POV
Today’s investigation was disappointing. If only Valdirra didn’t have laws. I wanted to walk into the investigation room and force them to confess at all costs. I wanted them to feel the pain of a mother whose child they kidnapped. Separated from her children without knowing their whereabouts.
Maybe they didn’t know and have never felt that when a mother gives birth to her child, then automatically her child has become half of her life. If that half of life is taken away from her, then how does the mother survive?
I can’t just stay silent. Maybe I can do something besides wait for the results of Nick’s investigation.
Ah, I forgot that Lisa and Max are good at finding information. So, I hurriedly messaged Lisa and Max and invited them to meet at our mansion. Luckily, Lisa was in Valdirra and Max wasn’t filming a movie. Hopefully, they could help.
The next day.
Early in the morning, when the sun was already sitting in its place, Jay and I were already sitting at the dining table enjoying breakfast together. However, there was one thing that surprised me that morning.
“Jay, did you ask Lily to prepare all this?” I asked curiously.
“Yes, I wanted you to eat more. The twins’ kidnapping incident has drained your mind and energy. However, take care of your condition because our child in your womb is depending on you. Besides, I see you’ve been eating a little for the past few days. Eat more and if you don’t comply, I will ask Lily to cook more,” Jay replied with a big smile.
“I can’t eat much. How can you be so cruel?” I retorted.
“Cruel for your good. Eat slowly and often. Let’s eat before Lisa and Max arrive,” he said again. I nodded obediently.
While enjoying my breakfast, my eyes gazed at Jay’s face. Warm feelings flowed through me. What would my life be like without him? How lucky I am to have him and to live life together with him through the difficulties.
An hour after finishing breakfast, Lisa and Max arrived. I invited them to sit by the pool while enjoying the tea and cake that had just been cooked. After telling them everything that happened, Lisa suddenly said, “I have an idea and through this idea, I think I can get more information.”
“What’s your idea?” asked Max curiously.
