Chapter 65 Got good news to share with him.
Arel
I woke up with a crick in my neck and my face half smashed against my desk. The clock on the wall said 3:05 AM. Guess I passed out right here in my office chair again.
I have been sitting in this room since yesterday afternoon, digging through journals from old Alphas and Lunas. Elder Garret sent over twenty of them, plus some from Betas and Gammas. Just more crap to sort through.
After what went down with Leona and finding out about her and Cyrus, I decided to actually work instead of drinking myself stupid every night. The jealousy was eating me alive anyway. Might as well make it useful.
But I am exhausted. Been at this for days now and every single journal says the same thing. Does not matter if the Luna was chosen or fated. They only last one or two years as Luna. That is it. Nothing new. Nothing that gives me any real hope.
I can not stop though. Can not waste more time. She is slipping away from me and I can feel it. I want to claim her so damn bad.
And look, I get it. If she is keeping her options open, that is on me. I pushed her to this point. But it has to end soon or we will both lose our minds. I know she wants me more than she wants Cyrus. I still have that advantage.
I rubbed my hands over my face to wake up. Still had eight more journals to read.
I hate admitting this, but the hope is fading. These are the newest journals and I am pretty sure they will say the same thing my grandfather told me. But I have to try anyway.
Why am I even doing this anymore? I guess because there is still that tiny piece of hope hanging around. Just a little. That is all I need. I want years with my Luna. Years with my pack.
I grabbed another journal and opened it up. Held my breath and got ready to be disappointed again.
Come on, Selene. Give me one. Just one.
Alpha Diego 1916 1938
Luna Estelle 1919 1938 (Fated)
Firstborn Dante
Secondborn Marco
Thirdborn Cassidy
Beta Castor 1916 1938
I stopped breathing. My eyes went wide and my heart started pounding hard in my chest. I pressed my lips together trying to calm down.
There was a handwritten note saying they were fated mates. Alpha Diego and Luna Estelle spent nineteen years together as Alpha and Luna.
Nineteen fucking years.
My hands were shaking as I opened the last page of the journal. Luna Estelle had written something there in beautiful handwriting. I focused on that page and everything else just disappeared.
13 November 1937
It has been three weeks since Cassidy was born and I can not get over how beautiful she is. But it is not just me. Her father and her brothers love her too. She looks like an angel. I have never seen a more beautiful pup. My sons are beautiful as well but Cassidy is something else.
Who would have thought that after fourteen years since I had Marco, I could still get pregnant and give birth again? The Moon Goddess has been good to us.
A new era is coming for me. For all of us.
In four months, our son Dante will become Alpha. I will step down as Luna along with my fated mate. We will raise Cassidy as ordinary pack members for the first time.
I will miss being Luna and all the hard work that came with it. But I am excited to just be a normal she-wolf with my mate. To raise Cassidy together in a normal...
I stopped reading. My breath caught in my throat. I did not even notice I was smiling.
I found one. That should be enough. I said I only needed one. But I could not stop myself from reaching for the next journal. I started flipping pages faster, full of energy.
Not this one. Chosen Luna.
I picked up another. Then another. Until I got to the fifth.
Alpha Marcus 1860 1885
Luna Allestain 1865 1885 (FATED)
Firstborn Julio
Secondborn Arthur
Beta Mariano 1835 1862
Beta Maximus 1862 1885
26 May 1885
Tomorrow I, Marie Allestain Galhart, will step down as Luna of the Black Shadow Pack. I have served for twenty great years. It has been an honor beyond measure.
I will never forget when I first came here. No one welcomed me and I did not know why until my Alpha told me. A fated Luna was never welcome and would never be accepted.
But he fought for me. He wanted me and no one else.
It took years before the pack warmed up to me. Years to prove I was not going to destroy their Alpha or their pack. Years to prove I loved my Alpha and would do anything to protect him and all of them.
But once they finally accepted me, I was surrounded by love and respect. More than any Luna could ask for. I am grateful for that.
I pray to the Goddess that the future fated Lunas of this pack never have to go through what I went through. That they will not be rejected or thrown away.
I closed the journal and pressed my forehead against it. Held it tight. I did not know a book could make me feel this weak. I could feel her pain. And through her words, I could feel Leona's pain too.
But even with how heavy that journal entry was, happiness exploded inside my chest.
Leona. That was all I could think about.
Those two journals were more than enough.
I still did not know what kind of life I could give Leona and my pack after I claimed her. But these were the glimmer of hope I had been looking for.
I was ready to take back what was mine from the start.
Energy flooded through me as I put both journals carefully in my drawer and opened my office window. I jumped out and ran straight for the forest.
The sun was coming up. Time to let my wolf run before I put my whole life back in order.
I stood outside Leona's house with nothing on and a dead animal in my hand. I laid the deer I had caught right in front of her door and crouched down. Used the blood to trace her name on the deer's body. Lightly. Hopefully she would be the one to find it.
Yeah, it probably looks creepy. But this is how I tell her I want to court her again. Win her back.
I still had energy and excitement running through my body as I took off toward the trees and shifted back to my wolf. Headed for the packhouse.
Time to clean up and go talk to her father. Got good news to share with him.
