Scattered Rose Petals
Scattered Rose Petals
ROMANY
All I had was butter and a carton of milk when I left the house, but now...
Two take out boxes sit untouched inside of the refrigerator. As if someone ordered food from a fancy restaurant and left it here in my house for me to eat.
But that's not all. There is also a bottle of wine on one of the shelves inside. Expensive. Chateau Lafite.
What the hell is going on?
Ruiz?
Maybe he's here for a visit.
Could that fucked up doll be his doing?
I'll kill him if it is. I will sock him right in that dumb buzzard nose of his and scratch the eyes right off of his face.
And the wine? Has he finally decided to make his move?
Ha! The joke's on him, cause I will not be drinking.
Slamming the refrigerator door, I stalk through the house, chest heaving, claws showing, lip lifting, but... he's not here. No one... is here. So... what?
Maybe he went out?
Ripping my phone out of my back pocket, I take a seat in the living room and dial his number.
He answers on the third ring, "Hello mi reina, to what do I owe the pleasure?"
He sounds out of breath and the soft murmur of a female's voice in the background tells me why he didn't answer on the first ring.
If he was here, I doubt he'd be out fucking around. I mean, I don't know for certain, but he's already told me that the very next time he visits, he expects to fuck me. That being said, it wouldn't make sense for him to buy two dinners, a bottle of wine, and a fucking doll just to disappear in search of someone else to sate his appetite with. That would just be odd.
Even more odd, is the tiny little sliver of jealousy that snakes up my back when I realize he's not alone, but I let it go. I've come to realize that I am a terribly greedy bitch when it comes to any man that I deem belongs to me, and I truly need to shed that particular layer of skin, because none of them really do.
Not anymore, anyway.
"Are you in town?" I ask him point blank, my eyes skirting around my cozy little living room for anything else that might be out of place.
The sound of a sheet ruffling and a female whining fills the space on the other line, followed by the distinct patter of Ruiz's bare feet before he answers with, "What the devil would make you think that? Did you have a bad dream maybe? Or a very, very good dream? A... wet dream perhaps? Because I am not there, but given the right incentive, I could be."
Fuck. If it's not Ruiz, then... who? "Do you think maybe this house was double booked or something? Or maybe-"
"Double booked? What? No! Now, wait a minute, Romany... that is not possible."
"Why? Why is that not possible?" I practically screech into the phone, "I-"
"The house is paid off! Bought! For you! There is no way it was double booked - so why don't you tell me what is going on, eh? Do you need me to come? It will take half a day, but I can be there if you need me."
A feminine voice sounds in the background, "Ruiz?! What are you doing? Come back to bed, baby. Please! I want you to-"
Ruiz's cold voice sounds strained and irritated, "Shut up, puta! I left the room to be alone. Can you not see I am on the phone? Get the fuck out of here! Now!"
In spite of everything, that brings the stupidest little smile to my lips. "That wasn't very nice," I chide him, not really giving a fuck.
A dark chuckle greets my ears. "Fuck nice. She is lucky I brought her to my room instead of simply fucking her in the kitchen like I was going to do. To tell you the truth, mi reina, you are the only one I am ever nice to and I still have a hard time figuring out why. Now... do you need me to come or-"
"No! No, no. That's alright. I..."
"If you are in danger, I would like to know. My father is dead, but... you never know... there might be other enemies that-"
"Not enemies! Enemies don't leave gifts."
"Gifts?" Ruiz hisses. "Oh... shit."
My ears perk up at the unmistakable sound of regret that has suddenly crept into his voice. "Oh shit? What do you mean, oh shit? Why oh shit?"
A long sigh is my only reply for a moment while the sound of ice clinking and a bottle popping open reaches my ears. "Mi reina," he begins, "there is something that I have been meaning to tell you... something that you deserve to know."
"Something? Something like what?" My heart begins to pound in my chest, blood rushing through my ears as my gaze fixes on the coffee table and what rests in the center of it.
A jewelry box. Small. As if made to house a ring. It sits in the middle of a pile of scattered rose petals.
No. No way!
A heart shaped velvet box?!
A romantic dinner...
A... doll... that looks so much like me it might have been made in my likeness.
A... doll...
Don't you do this heart! Don't you do this to me! I won't survive it if it isn't true.
I whisper into the phone, "Tell me, Ruiz! Tell me that it's true. Tell me what I'm thinking is true. Please!"
Another long sigh, "Well, that depends, princesa. What are you thinking?"
Mickey.
"But... h-he's dead, right? Alex and Mickey... they are both dead!"
A voice sounds behind me, in the darkness of the hall, "No, doll. We're not."
