COLLAPSE

COLLAPSE
NICO ROMANO - POV

The building sounds like it's dying.

Concrete cracking somewhere above us. Metal groaning in ways that make my teeth ache. Support beams bending. People screaming. Running. Baseline and enhanced all looking the same flavor of terrified.

Elena's tearing the hospital apart and we're all still inside.

I'm fast. Always have been. But you can't outrun physics when the ceiling decides to come down.

"We need to stop her." I'm shouting but I barely hear myself over the chaos. Alarms. Breaking things. Someone crying. "Stop Elena or we're all dead."

"How?" Marco's wheelchair is caught on something. Debris. His face is tight with frustration. "She's too powerful. Too angry to reason with."

Angry. That's the core of it. Elena's rage is feeding her telekinesis. Making it stronger. Wild. Uncontrollable.

I see Isabella frozen in the hallway. Hands pressed against her temples like she's trying to hold her skull together. Eyes squeezed shut.

"I can feel her." Isabella's voice is barely there. "Elena's pain. It's crushing me."

Then the idea hits. Stupid reckless probably-gonna-kill-me idea.

But I'm good at those.

"Your empathy." I grab Isabella's shoulders. Make her look at me even though her eyes are unfocused. "Can you push it outward? Make Elena feel what she's doing to everyone?"

"What?" Isabella blinks. Struggling to process. "Nico, I can barely handle what I'm feeling right now."

"The blood bond." I'm working it out as I talk. Half plan, half desperation. "You're connected to me. To all of us. Use me. Channel your empathy through me straight into Elena's head."

"That's insane." Dante appears beside us. Blood running from a cut above his eye. Glass probably. "You'll both burn out."

"Better than being crushed." I look at Isabella. Really look at her. "Can you do it?"

She stares at me. I watch her calculate odds. Weigh risks. Count lives against possibilities.

"I don't know." Her honesty cuts through everything else. "I've never tried anything like this. Don't even know if it's possible."

"First time for everything." I take her hand. Her skin is hot. Feverish. "What do I do?"

"Don't let go." She grips back hard. Desperate. "No matter what happens. Don't let go."

Above us something massive cracks. Chunk of ceiling breaks free. Falling.

Luca yanks Marco's wheelchair backward. The concrete hits where Marco was half a second before. Dust explodes. Fills the air with grit that coats my throat.

"Now." Marco. Urgent. Coughing. "Do it now."

Isabella closes her eyes. Her hand in mine gets hotter. Not burning but intense. Alive.

Then everything breaks open.

The world floods in. Not physical. Emotional. Every person in this building crashing into my head simultaneously.

Terror from baseline humans trapped in stairwells. Concrete fear. They know they're dying. Know there's no escape.

Rage from Elena's soldiers. Betrayal. She promised them safety and now she's killing them too.

Pain. So much pain. Injured people on both sides. Bleeding. Bones broken. Desperate.

And underneath it all, tiny threads of hope. People helping strangers. Enhanced holding doors for baseline. Baseline carrying wounded enhanced. Small choices. Better choices.

I'm drowning. Too many emotions that aren't mine. Can't breathe. Can't think.

Isabella's voice cuts through. Not out loud. In my head.

"Find Elena. Push it toward her."

I search through the storm of feelings. Looking for Elena's signature in the chaos. Her rage burns brighter than everything else. A wildfire in the middle of fear.

Found her.

I push everything toward that fire. All the terror. All the fragile hope. All the desperate will to live pulsing through every person here.

Feel this. Feel what you're causing. Feel what you're destroying.

Elena's telekinetic grip stutters. Just for a second. The ceiling stops cracking.

Then she pushes back.

Her pain hits me like a truck. Memories. Emotions. Decades of suffering compressed into seconds that feel like hours.

Child in a white room. Seven years old. Calling for her father. Vincent never comes.

Doctors in masks. Needles piercing skin. Electrodes attached to her skull. Pain that splits her head open from the inside. She screams. They make notes.

Years in a concrete cell. Metal door. She can hear other enhanced children in nearby cells. Crying. Then silence. She learns what silence means.

Experiments where her telekinesis manifests wrong. Too strong. Too wild. Breaking equipment. Breaking people. Doctors watching. Recording. Never helping.

Bodies removed in the night. Questions never answered. The crushing knowledge that she's not a person. She's a specimen. A test subject. Disposable.

The rage underneath is earned. Justified. Infinite.

I can't breathe under the weight of it. Can't separate my thoughts from hers. Just drowning in lifetime after lifetime of pain.

Isabella's hand tightens. Anchor in the storm.

"Don't let go." Her voice is strained. Shaking. "Push through, Nico. Show her more."

More? There's only pain here. Only rage and suffering and hatred that makes perfect sense.

Then I feel them. The twins. Isabella's babies. Their presence suddenly clear in the empathic connection.

They're scared.

Six weeks along and somehow they're aware enough to feel their mother's terror. Feel the building shaking. Feel the possibility of dying before they're born.

Enhanced children. Like Elena. Like all of us.

Innocent. Unaware. Undeserving of violence they didn't choose.

I push that toward Elena. Let her feel the twins' fear. Two enhanced children who haven't hurt anyone. Who don't deserve to die in her war.

Elena's telekinetic grip loosens. The building stops shaking.

"No." Elena's voice cracks in my head. "I'm trying to save them. All enhanced children."

Not by killing them. I push the thought hard. Not by making baseline humans more afraid. Not by proving we're monsters.

The connection intensifies. Isabella's abilities flooding through me into Elena. Making her feel everything whether she wants to or not.

The baseline medical staff who stayed behind. Helping evacuate injured patients. Enhanced and baseline both. Risking their lives.

The enhanced soldiers who chose protection over violence. Making different choices in the moment that mattered.

Walsh holding her tactical teams back. Trusting us. Giving us time we don't deserve.

It's not perfect. It's messy. Complicated. People scared on all sides.

But it's not Vincent's vision. Not supremacy. Not extinction.

Something else. Something fragile that might survive if we stop killing each other.

Elena feels it all. I sense her resistance breaking. Not because she's weak. Because she's finally feeling what she refused to feel.

Hope. Small. Damaged. Barely alive.

But real.

The telekinetic pressure releases. Complete. Sudden. The building settles with groans and creaks but nothing collapses.

Isabella's hand goes slack in mine. She sways. I catch her before she hits the floor. She's breathing too fast. Shaking.

"Did it work?"

"Yeah." My voice sounds wrong. Distant. "Look."

Elena stands in the research wing doorway. Visible through broken windows. She's crying. Actual tears tracking through dust on her face.

She looks at Isabella. At me. At the destruction surrounding us.

"I can feel them." Elena's voice is raw. Broken. "Everyone. They're all the same. Enhanced and baseline. Just scared. Just trying to survive."

"Yes." Isabella pulls away from me. Unsteady but standing.

"I didn't want to feel this." Elena wraps her arms around herself. Protective. Wounded. "It's easier when they're not real. When they're just enemies."

"I know." Isabella moves toward Elena. Slow. Careful. Like approaching an injured animal. "But they are real. We're all real."

Elena stares at her. Sisters who look alike now. Same pain. Same power. Same impossible choice.

"I'll stop." Elena's voice barely carries. "Call off my soldiers. Release everyone."

Relief floods through me so strong I almost collapse.

Then Elena continues.

"But you have to promise me something." Her eyes lock on Isabella. "Use your power. Your influence. Those babies." She glances at Isabella's stomach. "Change this world. Make it safe for enhanced children."

"Elena."

"Promise me." Elena's voice breaks completely. "No more children in white rooms. No more experiments. No more torture."

"I promise." Isabella. Certain despite exhaustion. "I'll fight for that."

"Good."

Elena's legs give out. She collapses. Just drops like her strings got cut.

Isabella stumbles forward but tactical teams are already moving. Government agents in body armor flooding through entrances. Weapons drawn. Surrounding Elena's unconscious body.

Walsh appears. Professional. Gun out but not aimed. "Stand down." She orders her team. Looks at Isabella. "Is she neutralized?"

"She's exhausted." Isabella kneels beside Elena despite her own shaking. "She needs medical attention. Not a cell."

"She tried to collapse a hospital." Young agent. Male. Angry. "That's terrorism."

"She's a victim who just stopped her own attack." Isabella. Fierce despite barely being able to stay upright. "That should count for something."

Walsh studies Elena. Calculating politics against humanity. Government interests against human ones.

"Medical containment." Walsh decides. "Full security. Treat her injuries. We'll discuss charges later."

Agents move in. Lift Elena carefully. She doesn't wake.

Isabella watches them take her sister. Her hand rests on her stomach. Protecting the twins. Protecting the future Elena demanded she fight for.

"You made a promise." I say quietly.

"I know." Isabella. Exhausted. Determined. Terrified. "And I have absolutely no idea how to
