IMPOSSIBLE RESCUE

IMPOSSIBLE RESCUE
MARCO ROMANO - POV

Ten minutes to save everyone or watch the building burn with them inside.

I'm calculating before Isabella finishes explaining through the phone pressed to my ear. Four operations. Limited resources. Probability of success approximately eighteen percent.

Acceptable odds considering the alternative is zero.

"How many hostiles between us and the exits?" I'm already mapping the building layout in my head. Third floor research wing. Two stairwells. One elevator shaft. West exit partially blocked by debris.

Dante appears from around the corner. Breathing hard. "Six in the east wing. Three more near the stairwell. All enhanced. I can feel their anxiety from here."

Anxiety is useful. Anxious people make mistakes.

"Civilian count." I look at Nico. He's vibrating with unused energy. Wants to move. To act. To do something instead of planning.

"Twenty-three hostages this floor." Nico's hands flex. Open, closed, open. "Maybe twelve patients upstairs can't walk on their own. And Walsh's people are outside with those enhanced prisoners."

I process variables. Time, space, personnel, threat levels. It's a equation with too many unknowns but I can see the shape of a solution.

"Luca." I turn to him. He's standing too still near the window. Wrong kind of still. "Civilian extraction. West exit. Non-lethal force only."

"Understood." His voice is flat. Empty in ways that make my instincts scream warnings.

No time for instincts. Only math.

"Dante, psychological approach. Make Elena's soldiers believe they're outmatched. Surrounded. Create doubt."

"I can do that." Dante's already moving toward the stairwell. Smooth. Confident. "What else?"

"Nico, chaos. Draw Elena's attention everywhere except where we actually are."

"Finally." Nico grins. Dangerous. Excited. "Something fun."

"Isabella." I pull out my phone. Call her directly. "Start healing casualties. Both sides. No preference. Elena needs to see you're committed to everyone equally."

"Marco, there are so many injured." Her voice shakes through the speaker. "I don't know if my abilities can reach them all in time."

"You don't need to reach them all." I'm working through the psychological angle. Elena's watching. Judging. "You need to reach enough that the pattern is undeniable. Baseline and enhanced. Equal value."

"And you?" Isabella asks. "What's your role?"

"I'm making sure this controlled chaos doesn't become actual chaos." I'm already pulling up the hospital's structural plans on my phone. Walsh sent them ten minutes ago. Old building. Built in 1987. Multiple additions that don't quite match. Weak points in the northeast corner. "And preventing Walsh's tactical teams from turning this into a massacre."

"When this goes wrong." Isabella says it like fact. "Not if."

"Plans never survive contact with reality." I believe in honesty. "But we adapt faster than they do."

Thirty seconds. I watch Dante position himself near the stairwell. He's unarmed. Hands visible. Body language nonthreatening. Classic de-escalation posture.

Twenty seconds. Nico disappears around the corner. Heading somewhere with intent. Probably the fire alarm system. Old buildings have exploitable weaknesses.

Fifteen seconds. Luca waits near the hostage cluster. His shoulders are rigid. Something's wrong but I can't identify what and I don't have time to diagnose.

Ten seconds. I watch through the research wing window. Elena's young guard shifts his weight. Nervous. Gun held at wrong angle. Amateur.

Five seconds.

"Execute."

The fire alarm screams. Nico's timing is perfect as always. Strobe lights pulse red. Confusion spreads through the hallway like spilled water.

Dante approaches the first enhanced soldier. I can't hear the conversation but I see body language shift. The soldier's grip loosens on his weapon. Eyes widen. Looking around like threats are materializing from shadows.

Doubt. Fear. Exactly what we need.

One hostage group starts moving. Dr. Okafor from pediatrics. Lisa the phlebotomist. Patients in hospital gowns shuffling toward the west exit. Vulnerable. Slow.

A soldier appears at the hallway end. Gun raised. Shaking hands.

Luca moves. Puts himself between the weapon and the civilians. His body as shield. Deliberate. Calculated. Sacrificial.

"Move." The soldier's voice cracks. "I'll shoot."

"Then shoot." Luca. Calm. Like he's discussing weather. "They're still leaving."

The gun fires. Three times. Fast succession.

Luca takes all three rounds center mass. Doesn't fall. Enhanced physiology absorbing impact that would drop baseline humans. But I see him stagger. See his jaw clench.

The hostages run. Disappearing through the exit while Luca stands there bleeding.

"Status." I need confirmation.

"Functional." Luca's voice is tight with pain. "Keep moving."

He's lying about the severity but he's still operational. That's sufficient.

My phone buzzes. Text from Isabella. "Starting triage. Four injured at guard station."

I track her location on the building schematic. Too exposed. Vulnerable to crossfire. But she's exactly where she needs to be for maximum visibility.

Another text. This time from Walsh. "Prisoners secure. Holding position. Waiting for your signal."

Good. One variable controlled.

Dante has three soldiers clustered now. Talking fast. Pointing at exits. Their weapons are lowered. Not surrendered but no longer aimed at hostages. Progress.

Nico triggers another alarm. Different section. Then another. Creating the impression of multiple simultaneous breaches. Elena's people are fracturing. Looking at each other for guidance nobody can provide.

The evacuation continues. Steady stream of civilians heading for exits. Luca holds his position even though blood is soaking through his shirt now. Visible. Dark. Too much.

"Luca, fall back." I give the order. "You're compromised."

No response.

He's moving but wrong. Smooth. Efficient. Predatory in ways Luca never moves.

I watch him approach an enhanced soldier who's facing away. Distracted. Vulnerable.

Luca doesn't announce himself. Doesn't give warning.

Just kills.

Fast. Clinical. Neck broken before the soldier realizes danger exists.

My stomach drops.

"Luca stand down." I'm already moving. Wheelchair faster than people expect when I need it to be. "Luca respond."

He's moving to another target. Different soldier. This one sees him coming. Tries to defend.

Luca is faster. Better trained. Something else is controlling him. Something Vincent put inside him that I don't fully understand.

Two more bodies before I reach him.

"Luca." I grab his arm. Force him to face me. "Stand down now."

His eyes are empty. Flat. He looks at me like I'm an obstacle. A problem requiring solution.

Then something breaks. Recognition floods back. Horror follows immediately after.

"I didn't." His voice cracks. "I couldn't stop it. Marco, I couldn't."

Then Elena's scream.

It comes from everywhere and nowhere. Telepathic amplification making sound physical. The windows along the hallway explode inward. Glass raining down. I throw my arm up. Feel shards cut through my sleeve.

"You see?" Elena's voice is in my head. In everyone's head. "Coexistence is impossible. You're all killers pretending to be heroes."

The floor cracks under my wheelchair. Long fracture spreading like lightning.

Telekinesis. Massive. Uncontrolled rage given physical form.

Ceiling tiles fall. Support beams groan. The hospital is old. Not built for stress like this.

"Evacuate." I'm shouting. "Everyone out now."

People are running. Enhanced and baseline both. Scrambling for exits that are sealing themselves. Debris falling. Blocking routes.

Elena's telekinetic grip tightens. Walls cracking. Buckling inward.

I see a support column bend. Concrete crumbling. Then another.

The building is coming down.

And we're all still inside.
