HOSPITAL SIEGE
HOSPITAL SIEGE
ISABELLA HART - POV
The hospital smells like ozone and fear.
Not the usual antiseptic burn. Something sharper, electric. The air tastes metallic. Like blood before it hits your tongue. My stomach twists and I don't know if it's the twins or terror.
We're too late.
The main entrance is chaos. People streaming out, stumbling, some supporting injured staff. A nurse I recognize from my old shifts, Emily, crashes into me. Blood soaks through her scrubs at the shoulder.
"Isabella?" She stares like I'm a hallucination. "You're dead. They said you were dead."
"What happened inside?" My hands are shaking. I grip her arms to steady both of us.
"Armed people. They came in through the service entrance. They're holding hostages." Her breath comes fast, panicked. "In the research wing. Looking for Dr. Hart."
The ground tilts under me.
"How many hostages?"
"I don't know. Twenty? Thirty? Staff and patients. Isabella, they have guns and something else. Something that makes the air feel wrong."
Enhanced abilities. She's describing enhanced abilities.
Luca's hand finds my shoulder. Warm. Steady. "We need to wait for Walsh's team."
"My mother doesn't have time." I'm already moving toward the entrance. My legs feel disconnected from my brain but they're working. That's enough.
"Isabella." Marco's voice cuts through the noise. "Walking in there without a plan gets everyone killed."
"Then make a plan fast."
I don't wait for an answer. Can't. The twins are doing something inside me, feeding energy through my blood that feels like lightning. Everything is too bright, too loud, too much.
The lobby is empty. Chairs overturned. Papers scattered like someone swept an entire desk onto the floor. The elevators are shut down. Red emergency lights pulse along the walls, making shadows jump and twist.
Stairs. I head for the stairs.
Behind me, footsteps. All four of them following because that's what they do. What they've always done since this started. I don't know if that's love or habit anymore and I don't have time to figure it out.
"Third floor." Dante's voice is tight. He's looking at his phone, pulling up the hospital layout. "Oncology research. That's where your mother's lab is located."
We climb. My heart pounds against my ribs. Not from exertion. The twins are doing something to my body, making me stronger than I should be. Faster. My hands rest against my stomach and I feel them, their presence, their awareness.
They know I'm scared.
The third floor hallway stretches too long. Too quiet except for a distant alarm somewhere deeper in the building.
Then I feel them. Enhanced individuals. Multiple signatures pressing against my awareness like hands against glass. Anger and pain radiating outward in waves that make my teeth ache.
"Six." The word comes out breathless. "Maybe seven. Spread throughout the floor."
"You can sense them?" Nico asks.
"Their emotions." I press harder against my stomach. The twins amplify everything and it's overwhelming. "They're terrified. Underneath the anger, they're so scared."
"Scared people with powers." Marco's wheelchair is quiet behind me. "That's the worst combination."
We move down the hallway. Glass crunches under our feet. Someone put a chair through one of the observation windows. The break room door hangs crooked on broken hinges.
The research wing doors are ahead. Through the small reinforced windows I can see people on the floor. Staff in scrubs. Patients in hospital gowns. A man stands guard near them. Young. Enhanced. I can feel his anxiety like smoke in my lungs.
"Let me go first."
Luca catches my wrist. His grip is gentle but firm. "Isabella."
"They're here for my mother." I look at him. At all of them. "For her research. That means they might listen to me."
"Or kill you immediately." Dante. Always honest even when it hurts.
"Then you'll figure something out." I pull free from Luca's grip. "You always do."
I push through the doors before anyone can stop me.
The guard spins fast. Gun raised. Young, maybe nineteen or twenty. Eyes wide with fear that shifts to something like recognition when he sees my face.
"Isabella Hart."
Not a question. He knows who I am.
"Let these people go." My voice sounds steadier than I feel. "They're not part of whatever this is."
"Can't." His hand shakes. The gun wavers but he doesn't lower it. "Elena's orders. Nobody leaves until we have Dr. Hart and her research."
"Elena's my half-sister." I take one step closer. Just one. Testing. "Let me talk to her."
He hesitates. Glances at the people on the floor. I recognize some of them. Dr. Okafor from pediatrics. Lisa the phlebotomist who always made my mother laugh. Patients with IV poles still attached, bags swaying like pendulums.
"She's in the main lab." He lowers the gun slightly. Not gone but not pointed at my chest anymore. "But she's not alone."
"Take me there."
He nods. Speaks into a radio clipped to his shoulder. "Isabella Hart is here. She wants to talk."
Static. Then a woman's voice, cold and clear. "Send her down. Alone."
"I'm going with her." Luca steps forward.
"Alone, or we start executing hostages." The voice doesn't change tone. Casual. Like she's ordering coffee. "Your choice, sister."
My throat closes. I look at Luca. At all of them. Marco's hands are tight on his wheelchair arms. Dante's jaw is clenched. Nico looks ready to explode.
"Stay with these people." I force the words out. "Keep them safe."
"Isabella." Marco's voice is strained. "This is exactly what Elena wants. You isolated. Vulnerable."
"I know."
I follow the young guard deeper into the research wing. The hallway stretches forever. My mother's lab is at the end. Double doors with small windows. I can see movement inside. Shadows crossing back and forth.
The guard opens the door. Steps aside.
I walk in.
The lab looks destroyed. Equipment smashed against walls. Papers everywhere, covering the floor in white drifts. Blood near an overturned desk. Not a lot but enough to make my stomach clench.
My mother is in the corner. Hands zip-tied behind her back. Bruise spreading purple across her left cheekbone. But conscious. Alert. When she sees me her eyes go wide.
"Isabella." Her voice cracks. "You shouldn't be here."
"Probably not." I can't look away from the bruise. Someone hit her. "But here I am."
"How touching."
The woman in the center of the room looks like me. Same height, same build, same dark hair pulled back severe. But her eyes are different. Colder. Vincent's eyes in the moments before he hurt someone.
Elena.
"Hello, sister." Her voice is pleasant. Wrong. Like humming while someone bleeds. "You came quickly."
"You threatened my mother."
"I acquired leverage." Elena corrects me like I'm a student who got the answer wrong. "Nothing personal. Just strategy."
Three other enhanced individuals stand with her. Two men, one woman. All watching me with expressions that make my skin crawl.
"Let her go." I gesture to my mother. My hand is shaking. "She's not part of this."
"She's everything." Elena moves closer to my mother. Not threatening exactly, just examining. Clinical. "Dr. Sarah Hart. Her research on enhanced amplification is decades ahead of anyone else. Do you know what I could do with that research? What my people could become?"
"I'm trying to help people." My mother's voice is defiant but I can feel her fear through the twins' amplification. Sharp and acidic. "Not create weapons."
"Weapons." Elena's smile is sharp. Wrong. "Interesting choice. Tell me, Doctor. When the government locked me in a cell at seven years old, when they attached electrodes to my skull and ran current through my brain until I couldn't remember my own name, were they helping?"
The temperature drops. Actually drops. Frost spreads across the nearest window in delicate patterns. Beautiful and terrifying.
My breath comes out white.
"I'm sorry." My mother means it. I can feel that too. "I'm so sorry for what they did to you."
"Sorry doesn't fix anything." Elena's voice goes soft. Dangerous. "Sorry doesn't bring back the children who died screaming in those facilities. Sorry doesn't help the enhanced prisoners they've driven insane."
Then I feel it. Her pain. Massive and raw and crushing. The twins amplify my empathy and suddenly I'm drowning in Elena's memories. They flood through me like ice water.
A child in a white room. Alone. Scared. Doctors watching through glass.
Years in a cell. Other enhanced children in nearby cells. Their screams at night.
Experiments. Bodies removed. Questions never answered.
The rage underneath is justified. Understandable. And absolutely terrifying.
"I can feel it." My voice shakes. I press both hands against my stomach. "The twins, they let me feel everything. What they did to you. I'm so sorry."
Elena's expression shifts. Surprise cracks through the cold mask. "You can feel my pain? Actually feel it?"
"Yes."
"Then you understand." She gestures around the destroyed lab. Papers swirl in a wind that shouldn't exist indoors. "Why violence is the only language they respect. The only way to make them stop."
"I understand the pain." I take a step toward her. Small. Testing. "But violence creates more violence. More fear. More prisons. More dead children on both sides."
"Pretty words." Elena's voice hardens again. "But I've seen what coexistence looks like. Enhanced individuals in cages while baseline humans debate whether we deserve to exist."
"Not all of them." I look at my mother. At her bruised face. "Some are trying to help."
"Some." Elena's laugh is bitter. "Some isn't enough when they're torturing children."
"So you'll torture their children instead?" The words come out before I can stop them. "The patients upstairs? The staff? They're innocent."
"Nobody's innocent." Frost spreads further across the windows. Cracking. "They benefit from the system that tortures us. That makes them complicit."
"That makes them human." My voice drops. "Scared humans making scared decisions. Just like you're doing right now."
Elena's eyes flash. Papers lift off the floor, swirling faster.
"Careful."
"You're scared." I press forward even though every instinct screams to run. The twins pulse inside me. Steady. Grounding. "Scared they'll hurt more enhanced children. Scared your people will die in those facilities. Scared if you don't strike first, you'll end up back in that white room."
"Stop."
"But burning hospitals doesn't make you safe." I can feel the terrified baseline humans throughout the building. Their fear mixing with Elena's rage until I can't tell them apart. "It makes you exactly what they fear. Exactly what they'll use to justify more prisons. More experiments. More dead children. Enhanced and baseline both."
Elena is breathing hard. The windows crack louder. Telekinetic pressure building against my skull until I want to scream.
"You think you're better than me?" Her voice cuts. "Because you fell in love with your captors? That's just Stockholm syndrome dressed up as romance."
The words hit like a fist. Somewhere behind the pain I wonder if she's right.
"I think I'm trying to find another way." I force the words through my tight throat. "A way that doesn't require choosing sides. A way where we both survive."
"Naive."
"Maybe." I glance at my mother. At the blood on the floor. "But your way guarantees war. More facilities. More experiments. More children screaming. Is that really what you want?"
Elena stares at me. The temperature fluctuates. Frost melting, reforming, melting again.
When she speaks, her voice is different. Quieter. More dangerous.
"Prove it."
"What?"
"Prove enhanced and baseline humans can coexist." Elena checks her watch. Casual. Like we're discussing lunch plans. "Right now. Save your mother from my soldiers. Save my enhanced prisoners from the government transport that's three blocks away. And stop the Romano brothers from killing my people in the hallway. All simultaneously."
My heart stops.
"That's impossible."
"That's coexistence." Elena smiles. Sharp. Cold. "You have ten minutes, Isabella. Show me it works, or I burn this building down with everyone inside. Enhanced and baseline both. Let's see which matters more to you."
