Chapter 88 Hurtful Words

Chapter 88 Hurtful Words

Evelyn stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her outfit nervously. Tonight was her dinner with Dylan, a mix of excitement and apprehension fluttering in her stomach.

As she smoothed down her dress, she heard a knock on her door and turned to see her brother Ethan standing there, arms crossed with a concerned expression.

"Evelyn, are you sure about this?"

Ethan asked, his tone gentle but firm.

"You barely know this guy."

Evelyn sighed, knowing her brother's protective nature all too well.

"I'll be fine, Ethan. Dylan seems nice, and I had a good time with him at Kylie's wedding."

"But that's different,"

Ethan persisted.

"You're going out alone with him now."

Before Evelyn could respond, their father appeared in the doorway, holding out a small box.

"I believe this belonged to your mother,"

he said softly, handing Evelyn a delicate necklace.

"She wore it on our first dinner at La Petite Rose."

Evelyn's heart squeezed with nostalgia as she took the necklace, memories of her mother and Dominic flooding back. She glanced at Ethan, silently pleading for his understanding.

"Dad, I remember that night. It meant a lot to Mom."

Dominic nodded, a wistful smile on his face.

"I thought you might like to wear it tonight. It's a special place for us."

With a grateful smile, Evelyn fastened the necklace around her neck, feeling a sense of comfort from her father's gesture.

"Thanks, Dad."

As she arrived at La Petite Rose later that evening, the familiar ambiance of the restaurant welcomed her like an old friend.

She found Dylan already seated at a corner table, a warm smile on his face as he stood to greet her.

"Evelyn, you look stunning,"

Dylan said sincerely, pulling out her chair.

"Thank you,"

she replied, feeling a bit more at ease as she sat down. The nostalgia of the place tugged at her heartstrings, but Dylan's lighthearted banter quickly brought her back to the present.

"So, Evelyn,"

Dylan began with a playful glint in his eyes,

"tell me, what's the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to you at work?"

Evelyn laughed, grateful for the change in topic. As they shared stories and jokes throughout the meal, she found herself enjoying Dylan's company more than she had anticipated.

Despite Ethan's initial concerns, she felt a sense of reassurance and comfort in Dylan's presence, as if he understood the importance of this evening to her.

Dylan was a man in his late twenty soon entering in his thirties. He had brown hair, hazel eyes. Was built muscular and tall. A very good looking man.

Evelyn had understood his intentions of asking her out but she made sure he understood she was not in that state of mind and she wasn’t even divorced yet.

They were so engrossed in their own world that they didn't notice the arrival of another familiar face until a sharp voice cut through the air.

"Well, well, if it isn't Evelyn,"

came the cutting remark. Evelyn looked up to see Jessica, her former school rival and now her ex-boyfriend's girlfriend, standing with a smug smile that sent a chill down her spine.

Dylan frowned slightly, sensing the tension, but before he could say anything, Jessica continued, her tone dripping with condescension.

"And who's this? Your latest charity case, Evelyn? I heard your little sister's wedding was quite the spectacle."

Evelyn clenched her fists, trying to maintain her composure.

"Jessica, what do you want?"

Jessica leaned in, her voice low and mocking.

"Oh, just thought I'd drop by and see how the 'queen bee' of our old school is doing. Heard you're pregnant, Evelyn. Quite the scandal, isn't it? No father in sight?"

Evelyn felt a pang of hurt and anger, but before she could respond, Jessica's face turned pale as she realized her mistake.

Evelyn's eyes narrowed as she stood up slowly, her voice cold and controlled.

"Jessica, maybe you should think twice before you speak."

Jessica stammered an apology, but the damage was done. Evelyn turned away, her heart heavy with a mix of emotions — humiliation, anger, and a deep sadness at Jessica's callous words. She couldn't bear to stay there a moment longer.

"Dylan, I'm sorry,"

she murmured, not meeting his eyes as she hurried out of the café, leaving Jessica speechless and ashamed in her wake.

Outside, Evelyn leaned against the wall, tears stinging her eyes as she tried to compose herself.

She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned to see Dylan standing there, his expression one of concern and empathy.

"Evelyn, are you okay?" he asked softly.

She shook her head, unable to speak as the weight of Jessica's words echoed in her mind.

Dylan wrapped his arms around her gently, offering silent comfort as Evelyn finally let herself cry, the pain and humiliation washing over her.

After a moment, Evelyn pulled away, wiping her tears with a shaky breath.

"I'm sorry, Dylan. This wasn't how I expected tonight to go."

Dylan shook his head, his voice firm.

"You have nothing to apologize for, Evelyn. Jessica was out of line."

Evelyn managed a weak smile, grateful for his understanding.

"Thank you, Dylan."

They stood there for a moment longer, the night quiet around them. Evelyn knew she would need time to heal from Jessica's cruel words, but in that moment, with Dylan felt the only comfort and she was grateful of him.

In the cozy living room of their home, Evelyn sat curled up on the couch, clad in her favorite oversized hoodie, a tub of chocolate ice cream balanced on her lap.

Tears streaked down her cheeks as she recounted the hurtful encounter with Jessica to her family gathered around her — her father her mother, brother Ethan, and sister Kacy.

"And then she just... she said those awful things,"

Evelyn sniffled, her voice breaking with emotion as she took another spoonful of ice cream.

"I couldn't even respond."

Dominic exchanged a concerned glance with Ethan, both feeling a mix of sympathy for Evelyn and frustration towards Jessica's cruelty.

But despite the heaviness of the situation, they couldn't help but smile faintly at Evelyn's earnestness, even in her distress.

Kacy, sitting beside Evelyn, reached over to squeeze her hand gently.

"Oh, Evelyn, I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Jessica has always been unbearable."

Ethan nodded in agreement, his protective instincts kicking in.

"Yeah, she's the worst. But you know she's just trying to get under your skin. Don't let her."

Evelyn managed a weak smile, grateful for her family's support.

"Thanks, guys. I know, I just... I didn't expect her to be so cruel."

Dominic cleared his throat, his expression serious yet comforting.

"Evelyn, you're stronger than you think. Jessica's words don't define you."

Evelyn nodded, her gaze dropping to her half-eaten tub of ice cream. Despite the situation, she couldn't deny that she felt a bit better with her family around, their warmth and understanding easing the sting of Jessica's words.

"You know,"

Kacy said with a mischievous twinkle in her eye,

"even when you're crying, you manage to look adorable with that hoodie and ice cream."

Evelyn chuckled softly through her tears, appreciating the attempt to lighten the mood.

Her and Ethan exchanged a fond smile at Kylie's attempt to lift Evelyn's spirits, silently sharing a moment of pride in their sister and daughter.

As the evening wore on, they continued to console Evelyn, sharing stories and laughter that gradually chased away the shadows of Jessica's cruelty.

Evelyn's room was a whirlwind of laughter and chatter as her best friends, Lilah and Sam, arrived for a much-needed stayover. The three of them had spread out blankets and pillows, creating a cozy nest on the floor.

The scent of popcorn filled the air, mingling with the soft glow of fairy lights strung up around the room.

"Okay, we need to do a funny video,"

Sam announced, grabbing her phone with a mischievous grin.

"How about we lip-sync to that ridiculous song we used to love in high school?"

Lilah laughed, tossing her long hair over her shoulder.

"You mean the one we made up a whole dance routine for? I'm in!"

Evelyn smiled, feeling her spirits lift.

"I can't believe you remember that. Let's do it!"

They spent the next hour filming and re-filming, collapsing into fits of giggles as they tried to perfect their synchronized dance moves.

Sam's dramatic expressions and Lilah's exaggerated gestures had Evelyn laughing so hard her sides hurt.

It was hard for Evelyn to move but she enjoyed herself carefully.

Once they had the perfect take, they flopped onto the pile of blankets, catching their breath. Evelyn, feeling more at ease than she had in days, couldn't help but marvel at how her friends always knew how to bring out her best self.

"Okay, now that we've embarrassed ourselves enough for one night,"

Lilah said, still laughing,

"let's have one of our legendary deep conversations. What's been on your mind, Ev?"

Evelyn hesitated for a moment, then opened up about everything that had happened with Jessica.

Lilah and Sam listened intently, their expressions shifting from shock to anger to empathy.

"Jessica is such a jerk,"

Sam said firmly.

"You don't deserve that kind of treatment, Ev."

Lilah nodded.

"You're amazing, Evelyn. Don't let anyone make you feel otherwise."

Their words and the warmth in their voices soothed Evelyn's heart. They talked late into the night, sharing stories, dreams, and secrets.

As the hours passed, Evelyn felt a sense of catharsis and connection, grateful for friends who were always there for her.

Eventually, their conversation drifted to lighter topics, and they drifted off to sleep amidst whispered jokes and quiet laughter. In the soft darkness of her room, surrounded by Lilah and Sam, Evelyn felt a profound sense of belonging and comfort, knowing she was never truly alone.
