Chapter 118 Romance and Tension
POV: Luna
Three days after the vision, I was still trying to make sense of everything.
The goddess wanted balance. The dark figure wanted me to understand sacrifice. Miguel was stuck in the otherworld. And my mark kept getting stronger whether I wanted it to or not.
I threw myself into training, pushing harder than ever before. If I was going to face whatever was coming, I needed to be ready.
Cole met me every morning before sunrise. We'd go to the clearing in the forest and practice syncing my wolf instincts with the otherworld magic.
I was getting better. The connection came easier now, lasting longer without exhausting me.
But there was something else growing between Cole and me. Something neither of us was talking about.
"Again," Cole said, circling me. "But faster this time."
I took a breath and reached for the otherworld thread. It responded instantly, flooding through my mark.
I shifted partially and moved.
Cole was ready. He dodged, then countered with a strike aimed at my shoulder.
I blocked, redirected his momentum, and tapped his chest with my clawed hand. Gentle. Controlled.
"Better," he said. "But you're still thinking too much."
"I'm trying not to accidentally hurt you."
"I can handle it." He moved again, faster.
We fell into a rhythm, our movements becoming a dance. Strike, block, counter, redirect.
I could feel my wolf and the magic moving together seamlessly now. No thought required. Just instinct.
Cole swept my legs. I twisted mid-fall, using the momentum to roll and come up behind him.
My claws stopped at his throat.
We froze.
I could feel his pulse under my hand, quick and strong. Could smell the adrenaline and something else. Something that made my own heart race.
"Good," Cole said softly. "That's exactly what you need to do."
I should have stepped back. Released the connection. But I didn't.
Cole turned slowly, my hand dropping from his throat.
We were standing so close I could feel the heat radiating off him. His eyes were dark, intense, locked on mine.
"Luna," he said, his voice low. "We need to talk about this."
"About what?"
"Don't." His jaw tightened. "Don't pretend you don't feel it too."
My heart was pounding. "Cole, I can't—"
"Because of Miguel?"
"Because of everything." I stepped back, letting my partial shift fade. "My life is complicated enough without adding this to it."
"You think I don't know that?" He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. "You think I planned on feeling this way about a student? About someone who's carrying a dead boyfriend's essence in her mark?"
The words stung, even though they were true.
"I'm sorry," I said quietly.
"Don't apologize." Cole moved closer again, his expression softening. "I'm not asking you to choose right now, Luna. I know you're dealing with things I can't even imagine. I just need you to know that I'm here. And I'm not going anywhere."
"Even though it's complicated?"
"Especially because it's complicated." He smiled, just a little. "I'm not afraid of complicated."
Before I could respond, my mark flared with sudden heat.
I gasped and grabbed my wrist.
"What is it?" Cole asked immediately.
"I don't know. It's different this time. Not a vision, just—"
The forest around us seemed to hold its breath. Birds stopped singing. The wind died.
"Something's coming," I whispered.
Cole's posture shifted instantly, all softness replaced by sharp focus. "Can you tell what?"
I closed my eyes and focused on my mark, on the otherworld connection that was always there now, humming under my skin.
The sensation was familiar but wrong. Like Miguel's essence, but darker. Twisted.
My eyes snapped open. "It's the dark figure. They're here. In our world."
"Where?"
I turned, my wolf senses searching. "Close. Moving fast."
"We need to get back to the Academy."
"No. If they're coming for me, I don't want them near the other students."
Cole looked like he wanted to argue, but he knew I was right. "Then we stand our ground."
We moved to the center of the clearing, back to back, waiting.
The figure materialized out of the shadows between trees. In daylight, I could see more details. Tall, humanoid, but wrong somehow. Their form seemed to flicker, like they weren't entirely solid.
"Luna Eclipse," they said. "You're getting stronger."
"What do you want?" I demanded.
"To give you a choice." The figure moved closer. "The goddess has kept you in the dark, but I believe in honesty. So let me tell you what she won't."
"Don't listen to them," Cole said. "Whatever they're selling, it's a lie."
"Is it?" The figure laughed. "Tell me, little wolf, has the goddess explained what will happen when you fully awaken your power? What you'll have to sacrifice?"
"She said balance requires payment."
"But did she tell you what that payment is?" The figure stopped a few feet away. "Did she tell you that every Eclipse wolf before you died before their twenty-fifth birthday? That the power she's given you will consume you from the inside out unless you feed it?"
My blood ran cold. "Feed it how?"
"Souls." The figure's voice was almost gentle. "The otherworld connection you've been building, it's a bridge. And bridges need anchors on both sides. Right now, your dead boyfriend is serving that purpose. But when his essence finally burns out, you'll need another. And another. Until you're nothing but a shell, consuming everyone you love to maintain your power."
"You're lying," Cole said.
"Am I?" The figure turned its attention to him. "How did you think Eclipse wolves maintained such incredible power? Where did you think it came from?"
I felt sick. "The goddess wouldn't—"
"The goddess does what she must to maintain balance," the figure interrupted. "Even if it means turning you into a monster."
"Then what do you want?" I asked. "Why tell me this?"
"Because I'm offering you another path." The figure extended a hand. "Give me your mark. Let me take the power and the burden. You can go back to being a normal wolf. Live a normal life. No more danger. No more consuming the people you love."
"And what do you get out of it?"
"The power, of course. I'm not pretending to be altruistic." The figure's form solidified slightly. "But unlike the goddess, I won't lie to you. I'll use the power for my own purposes. But I won't make you into a monster to do it."
Cole grabbed my arm. "Luna, don't listen to them. This is manipulation."
"Is it?" I looked at him. "What if they're right? What if this power does consume the people I love?"
"Then we'll figure it out. Together." His grip tightened. "But giving your power to this thing isn't the answer."
The figure sighed. "So loyal. It would be touching if it weren't so foolish."
"Get away from her," Cole growled.
"Or what? You'll fight me?" The figure laughed. "Boy, I've existed since the first wolves walked this earth. You're nothing."
Cole shifted fully, his wolf form massive and dark.
He lunged at the figure.
The figure didn't move. Cole's teeth and claws passed right through them like they were made of smoke.
"I tried to do this the easy way," the figure said.
They raised a hand and Cole was thrown backward, slamming into a tree with enough force to crack the trunk.
"Cole!" I ran to him.
He was already getting up, shaking off the impact. "I'm fine. Luna, run."
"I'm not leaving you."
"How sweet." The figure was suddenly in front of us. "But ultimately pointless."
They reached for my mark.
I reacted on instinct, grabbing the otherworld connection and flooding it with as much power as I could handle.
My mark blazed with light.
The figure recoiled. "What are you doing?"
"Making a choice," I said through gritted teeth. "And I choose to figure this out myself."
I released the power in a burst.
The otherworld energy exploded outward, washing over the clearing in a wave of silver light.
When it cleared, the figure was gone.
I collapsed, completely drained.
Cole caught me before I hit the ground. "Luna. Luna, stay with me."
"I'm okay," I managed. "Just tired."
"That was insane. And amazing. But mostly insane." He picked me up easily, cradling me against his chest. "We're going back to the Academy. You need the infirmary."
"Cole, what if they were telling the truth? About the power consuming people?"
"Then we'll find another way." He looked down at me, his expression fierce. "I meant what I said. I'm not going anywhere. Whatever this power demands, we'll face it together."
"You can't promise that."
"Yes, I can." He adjusted his grip, holding me closer. "Because I—"
He stopped himself, jaw tightening.
"Because you what?" I asked softly.
Cole was quiet for a long moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper. "Because I'm falling for you, Luna. And I don't care how complicated it is."
My heart stopped.
I should have said something. Should have told him I felt the same way. But the words stuck in my throat.
Because I did feel the same way. But I also still carried Miguel's essence in my mark. Still saw him in the otherworld. Still loved him, even if he was gone.
How could I choose between the boy I'd loved and lost and the man who was standing right here, offering to face the darkness with me?
Cole seemed to understand my silence. "You don't have to say anything. I just needed you to know."
We made it back to campus. Students stopped and stared as Cole carried me through the courtyard, but I was too exhausted to care.
Professor Cael met us at the infirmary entrance. "What happened?"
"The dark figure appeared," Cole said. "They tried to take Luna's mark. She fought them off."
Cael's expression hardened. "Get her inside. I'll inform the Headmaster."
The school nurse took over, guiding me to a bed and checking my vitals. My mark was still glowing faintly, pulsing with residual energy.
"Rest," she ordered. "Your body needs time to recover from that much power expenditure."
Cole stood by the door, looking like he wanted to stay but knowing he shouldn't.
"Go," I told him. "I'll be fine."
"Luna—"
"Please. I need to think."
He nodded reluctantly and left.
Nova, Aria, Sienna, and Lyric burst in moments later.
"We heard what happened," Nova said, rushing to my bedside. "Are you okay?"
"Physically, yes."
"And mentally?"
I told them everything. The figure's offer. Their claims about Eclipse wolves consuming souls. Cole's confession.
When I finished, they were all quiet.
Finally, Sienna spoke. "The figure could be lying. Trying to manipulate you into giving up your power."
"Or they could be telling the truth," Aria countered. "Either way, we need more information."
"I'll research Eclipse wolves," Sienna said. "See if I can find any historical records."
"And I'll hack into the Academy's restricted files," Lyric added. "Maybe there's something in there about your bloodline."
"What about Cole?" Nova asked gently. "What are you going to do about his confession?"
I closed my eyes. "I don't know."
"Do you feel the same way?"
"Yes. No. Maybe." I groaned. "I don't know how to feel anything right now. Everything's too complicated."
"Life's complicated," Aria said. "That doesn't mean you can't have feelings."
"But Miguel—"
"Miguel is gone, Luna." Nova took my hand. "I know his essence is in your mark. I know you see him in the otherworld. But he's not here. Cole is."
"That feels like a betrayal."
"It's not." Sienna's voice was soft. "It's called moving forward. And there's nothing wrong with that."
I wanted to believe them. Wanted to let myself feel what I was feeling without guilt.
But every time I closed my eyes, I saw Miguel's face. Felt his presence in my mark.
How could I move on when he was still part of me?
The nurse kicked my friends out after a while, insisting I needed rest.
I laid in the infirmary bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind racing.
The dark figure's words echoed in my head. Every Eclipse wolf died before twenty-five. The power will consume you.
Was it true? Was I destined to become a monster, feeding on the souls of the people I loved?
My mark pulsed, warm against my skin.
I closed my eyes and reached for the otherworld, needing to talk to Miguel.
He appeared in the clearing immediately, like he'd been waiting.
"Luna. Are you okay? I felt something earlier. A surge of power."
"The dark figure appeared in our world. They tried to take my mark."
Miguel's expression darkened. "What did they say?"
I told him everything. The offer. The warnings about consuming souls.
When I finished, Miguel was quiet for a long moment.
"It's true," he finally said.
My heart sank. "What?"
"I've been learning things here in the otherworld. Talking to other spirits." He took my hands. "Eclipse wolves do consume essence to maintain their power. It's why they all died young. The burden was too great."
"So I'm going to become a monster. Just like they said."
"No." Miguel's grip tightened. "Because you have something they didn't. Choice."
"What choice? If I use my power, I consume people. If I don't use it, I'm defenseless against whatever's coming."
"The choice to find another way." He touched my mark gently. "Luna, I'm here by choice. I'm anchoring your power by choice. And when the time comes that my essence isn't enough, we'll find another solution together."
"How can you be so calm about this?"
"Because I trust you." He smiled sadly. "And because I see what's happening between you and Cole."
I froze. "Miguel—"
"It's okay." He cupped my face. "Luna, I'm dead. My essence might be tied to you, but I'm not alive. And I don't want you to stop living because of me."
Tears burned my eyes. "I don't know how to let you go."
"You don't have to let me go. I'll always be part of you." He wiped a tear from my cheek. "But that doesn't mean you can't let someone else in too."
"It feels wrong."
"It feels like moving forward. And that's exactly what you need to do."
I wanted to argue. Wanted to tell him I couldn't, I wouldn't.
But deep down, I knew he was right.
"I'm scared," I whispered.
"I know. But you're also brave. Braver than anyone I've ever known." He pressed his forehead to mine. "Whatever comes next, Luna, you can handle it. I believe in you."
The otherworld started to fade. Miguel was pulling away, letting me go.
"Wait," I said. "Will I see you again?"
"Always." His voice was already distant. "But maybe not as often. You need to focus on the living now."
Then he was gone.
I woke up with tears on my face.
My mark was warm, pulsing gently. Miguel's essence was still there, still anchoring me. But something had shifted. Like he'd loosened his grip just enough to let me breathe.
I sat up and wiped my eyes.
The sun was setting outside the infirmary windows, painting everything in shades of gold and pink.
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in," I called.
Cole stepped inside, looking uncertain. "Hey. The nurse said you were awake."
"Yeah."
He moved closer, stopping a few feet from the bed. "How are you feeling?"
"Better. Confused. Tired."
"That's fair." He shoved his hands in his pockets. "Luna, about what I said earlier—"
"You meant it," I interrupted. "Didn't you?"
"Every word."
I took a breath. "I'm not ready for a relationship. Not yet. There's too much happening, too much I need to figure out."
Cole's expression fell slightly, but he nodded. "I understand."
"But," I continued, "I'm not saying never. I'm saying not yet."
Hope flickered in his eyes. "Yeah?"
"Yeah." I smiled, just a little. "So maybe you can wait a while? See if I get my life less catastrophically complicated?"
"I can wait." He moved to the bed and took my hand. "As long as you need."
My mark pulsed where our skin touched, warm but not painful. The otherworld magic and my wolf both seemed to approve.
"Thank you," I said. "For being patient. For being here."
"Always." He squeezed my hand. "Now get some actual rest. You look exhausted."
He left, and I laid back down.
For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe.
The future was still uncertain. The dark figure was still out there. My power was still dangerous and possibly deadly.
But I wasn't alone.
And maybe, just maybe, that was enough.
My mark pulsed one last time, gentle and warm.
I closed my eyes and let sleep take me, hoping tomorrow would bring answers instead of more questions.
