Chapter 117 Magical Training Breakthrough

Chapter 117 Magical Training Breakthrough
POV: Luna
I couldn't sleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those red glowing eyes, heard that distorted voice. Your mark is a key.
After tossing and turning for two hours, I gave up and slipped out of bed. Nova was snoring softly, still exhausted from the fight.
I grabbed a jacket and headed outside.
The campus was quiet, still recovering from the attack. Workers were already repairing the damaged walls, their hammering echoing through the pre-dawn silence.
I found myself walking toward the forest without really thinking about it. My feet just carried me there, drawn by some instinct I couldn't name.
The moon was still visible, pale and fading as the sun started to rise. It called to me, the way it always did.
I stopped at the edge of the tree line and sat down, crossing my legs.
My mark was still tingling, that constant low hum that had become background noise over the past few days.
I closed my eyes and tried to meditate like Sienna had taught me. Breathing in for four counts, holding for four, breathing out for four.
At first, nothing happened.
Then, slowly, I felt my wolf stir. Not aggressively, not demanding to be let out. Just present. Aware.
I let her rise to the surface without fully shifting, that in-between state where I could feel her senses overlaying mine.
The world sharpened. I could hear mice rustling in the underbrush fifty feet away. Smell the dew on the grass. Feel the subtle shifts in air pressure as clouds moved overhead.
My mark pulsed in rhythm with my heartbeat.
I thought about what had happened during the fight. The way I'd tapped into the otherworld, just enough to access that extra speed and power.
It had felt dangerous. Like standing on the edge of a cliff, one wrong step away from falling.
But it had also felt right. Natural, even.
I took a deep breath and reached for that connection again, carefully this time.
The otherworld responded immediately, like it had been waiting for me.
I didn't pull myself fully into it. Instead, I let a thin thread of power flow through my mark, into my wolf, syncing them together.
The effect was immediate.
My wolf's senses sharpened even further. I could feel the magic running through the forest, through the earth itself. It was like seeing color for the first time after living in black and white.
"Careful."
I jumped and my eyes snapped open. Cole was standing a few feet away, watching me with those intense dark eyes.
"How long have you been there?" I asked.
"Long enough to see you doing something incredibly stupid."
I bristled. "I'm just practicing."
"Practicing getting yourself killed." He moved closer and sat down beside me. "Tapping into the otherworld without supervision is dangerous, Luna. You know that."
"I'm being careful."
"That's what everyone says right before they lose control."
I wanted to argue, but he was right. I'd seen what happened to wolves who pushed too far, too fast. They either burned out or went rogue.
"I need to understand it," I said quietly. "This power. My mark. If I don't figure out how to control it, someone else will use it against me."
Cole was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Show me."
"What?"
"Show me what you were doing. Maybe I can help."
I hesitated. Cole had been teaching me combat techniques, but this was different. This was magic, otherworld stuff, things he shouldn't be able to help with.
But when I looked at him, I saw genuine concern. Not fear. Not judgment.
"Okay," I said.
I closed my eyes again and reached for the otherworld connection. The thread of power flowed through my mark, and I let my wolf rise to meet it.
"Now what?" Cole's voice was soft, careful not to break my concentration.
"I'm syncing my wolf instincts with the otherworld magic," I explained. "Trying to blend them together instead of keeping them separate."
"And it works?"
"Sometimes. When I don't think too hard about it."
I felt Cole shift closer. "Try adding movement. Small stuff. Just stand up."
I opened my eyes and stood, keeping the connection active.
The world was still sharp, still vibrant with that otherworld overlay. But now that I was moving, I could feel how unstable it was. Like balancing on a tightrope.
"Walk toward that tree," Cole instructed.
I did. Each step felt deliberate, controlled. My wolf and the magic moved together, synchronized.
"Now shift. Partially."
That was harder. Shifting while maintaining the otherworld connection required splitting my focus in ways that made my head hurt.
But I did it.
Fur rippled across my arms. My hands shifted into claws. My senses doubled, then tripled in intensity.
And the magic held.
"Holy shit," Cole breathed. "Luna, do you know what you just did?"
"What?"
"You're in a partial shift while channeling otherworld magic. That's not supposed to be possible."
I looked down at my clawed hands, at the faint glow coming from my mark.
"How does it feel?" Cole asked.
"Powerful," I admitted. "But also like I'm one wrong thought away from losing it."
"Then let's practice control." He stood and moved in front of me. "Try to touch my shoulder. Gently."
I reached out slowly. My clawed hand trembled with the effort of staying gentle, of not letting the power surge out of control.
I touched his shoulder. Barely a brush of contact.
"Good," Cole said. "Now try moving faster. Tap my other shoulder."
I moved. Fast. Faster than I should have been able to.
My claw stopped a millimeter from his skin.
Cole's eyes widened. "You're learning to control the speed."
"It's still hard."
"Everything worth doing is hard." He stepped back. "Again. But this time, I'm going to move."
He started walking in a circle around me. I tracked him easily, my wolf senses locked on his every movement.
"Touch my back," he said.
I moved. He dodged. I adjusted mid-motion, changing direction with a fluidity that shouldn't have been possible.
My claw touched his back. Gentle. Controlled.
"Again."
We went through the exercise a dozen more times. Each time, Cole moved faster, and each time, I matched him.
By the end, I was breathing hard, but the otherworld connection was still holding.
"How are you feeling?" Cole asked.
"Tired. But good."
"Try releasing the connection slowly. Don't just drop it."
I did as he said, easing back on the otherworld thread instead of cutting it off completely.
The world dimmed back to normal, my senses returning to baseline. My partial shift faded, leaving me fully human again.
I stumbled, suddenly exhausted.
Cole caught me. "Easy. You just did something that should have taken months to learn."
"Really?"
"Really." He helped me sit back down. "Most wolves take years to properly sync their instincts with magic. You did it in one session."
"Maybe it's the mark," I said, looking at my wrist. The glow was fading, but I could still feel the warmth.
"Maybe." Cole sat beside me. "Or maybe you're just that talented."
I laughed. "Right. I'm just naturally gifted at impossible magical nonsense."
"I'm serious." His voice was quiet. "I've been teaching combat for two years now, Luna. I've seen hundreds of wolves come through Silverwood. None of them have your instincts. Your control."
I didn't know what to say to that.
We sat in silence as the sun fully rose, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold.
"Luna," Cole said eventually. "What happened last night, with the cloaked figure. What did they mean about your mark being a key?"
"I don't know. The Headmaster and Professor Cael didn't seem to know either."
"But they're worried."
"Yeah."
Cole looked at me, his expression serious. "Whatever's coming, you know you don't have to face it alone, right?"
"I know."
"I mean it." He took my hand, his fingers warm against mine. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you."
My heart did a weird flip. The same one it had been doing a lot lately whenever Cole was around.
"You can't promise that," I said softly.
"Watch me."
For a moment, we just looked at each other. The air between us felt charged, heavy with something unspoken.
Then my mark pulsed, sharp and sudden, breaking the moment.
I gasped and pulled my hand back, clutching my wrist.
"What is it?" Cole asked.
"I don't know. It just—"
A vision slammed into me. Brief, but vivid.
Miguel. In the otherworld. But he wasn't alone. The dark figure from the forest was there, circling him like a predator.
Then it was gone.
I blinked, disoriented.
"Luna? Talk to me."
"Miguel," I said. "Something's wrong. The figure from last night, they're in the otherworld. Near Miguel."
Cole's jaw tightened. "Can you see him? Talk to him?"
"Not from here. I'd have to go back to sleep, enter the otherworld properly."
"Then let's get you back to your dorm." He stood and offered me his hand. "You need rest anyway after that training session."
I let him pull me up. My legs were shaky, exhausted from maintaining the magical connection for so long.
We walked back to campus in silence. Students were starting to emerge from their dorms, heading to breakfast or early classes.
Nova was waiting outside our room, looking worried. "Where have you been? I woke up and you were gone."
"Training," I said. "With Cole."
Nova looked between us, her eyebrows raised. "Training. Right."
"It's not like that," I said quickly.
"Uh-huh." She didn't look convinced. "Well, you look exhausted. Get some sleep. We don't have class until noon because of last night."
Cole squeezed my shoulder. "Get some rest. I'll check on you later."
He left, and Nova pulled me inside.
"Okay, spill," she said once the door was closed. "What's going on with you two?"
"Nothing. He's just been helping me with my magic."
"Luna, he looks at you like you hung the moon."
"No, he doesn't."
"Yes, he does." Nova sat on her bed, watching me. "And you look at him the same way."
I felt heat rise in my cheeks. "It's complicated."
"Because of Miguel?"
"Partly." I sat on my own bed, suddenly very tired. "Miguel's in the otherworld. He's part of my mark now, his essence anchored to me. How am I supposed to move on when he's literally tied to my soul?"
Nova was quiet for a moment. "I don't know," she admitted. "But Miguel wouldn't want you to stop living. You know that, right?"
"I know. It's just hard."
"Everything about this life is hard." Nova smiled sadly. "But that doesn't mean we can't find happiness in it."
I laid back on my bed, staring at the ceiling. "I need to sleep. I had a vision. Something's wrong in the otherworld."
"Do you want me to stay? Keep watch?"
"No. I'll be okay."
Nova looked uncertain but nodded. "Okay. But if you need me, just yell."
I closed my eyes and let exhaustion pull me under.
The otherworld appeared around me slowly, materializing like fog clearing.
I was in the familiar clearing where I usually met Miguel. But he wasn't there.
"Miguel?" I called out.
No answer.
I started walking, following the pull of the essence connection between us.
The otherworld felt different this time. Darker. The trees were twisted, their branches reaching like grasping hands.
I found Miguel near the edge of the clearing, staring at something in the distance.
"Miguel?"
He turned, and relief flooded his face. "Luna. Thank god."
I ran to him and he pulled me into a hug. For a moment, I let myself just exist in his arms, safe and warm.
Then I pulled back. "What's wrong? I had a vision. The dark figure—"
"They've been here," Miguel said grimly. "Watching. Waiting."
"For what?"
"For you, I think." He took my hand. "Luna, something's changing in the otherworld. I can feel it. The balance the goddess mentioned, it's shifting faster now."
"Because of my mark?"
"Because of what your mark represents." He looked at my wrist, where the mark glowed faintly even in this realm. "You're not just carrying power, Luna. You're carrying a responsibility. A choice that's coming."
"What choice?"
Before he could answer, the dark figure materialized behind him.
Miguel spun, putting himself between me and the threat.
"How sweet," the figure said. "The dead boy still thinks he can protect you."
"Who are you?" I demanded.
The figure laughed, that same distorted sound from the forest. "I'm the consequence of choices made long before you were born, little wolf. I'm the price of power."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only answer you're getting. For now." The figure tilted its head. "But I'll give you a gift. A warning, if you will."
"I don't want anything from you."
"Too bad." The figure raised a hand, and the otherworld around us rippled. "The goddess chose you to restore balance. But balance requires sacrifice. Remember that, Luna Eclipse. When the time comes to choose, remember that every power demands payment."
The otherworld shattered.
I woke up gasping, my mark burning like fire.
Nova was beside me instantly. "Luna! What happened?"
"The figure," I managed. "They're connected to the otherworld. To the goddess. To everything."
"What did they say?"
I told her about the warning, about the mention of sacrifice and payment.
Nova's face paled. "Luna, what if the goddess expects you to give up something? Or someone?"
"I don't know." I looked at my mark, still glowing faintly. "But I'm starting to think my power isn't a gift at all."
"Then what is it?"
I thought about Miguel, trapped in the otherworld. About the rogues drawn to my mark. About the darkness gathering around me.
"It's a debt," I said quietly. "And sooner or later, I'm going to have to pay it."
