Second chances
Maia Shelton stared at the tall woman who was currently standing in her office with a smile plastered on her face. She looked so beautiful, it should be a crime. She was dressed in casual sweatpants and over seized white t-shirt and a face cap over her long dark hair that fell over her shoulders.
Back in the past, it didn’t bother Maia how Morgan chose to dress. She could either dress feminine or masculine, she didn’t care, and most times, she was more feminine and the few times when she dressed masculine, it made her swoon. Like she was swooning right now.
The red-haired stood from her chair and walked around the mahogany table to where Morgan was standing. She stretched her hands forward, handing the bouquet to Maia which she took, muttering thanks with a smile plastered on her face as inspected the flowers.
Without warning, Morgan pulled Maia into her arms, taking her aback and before she could even process what was happening, her lips crashed against the red-haired briefly, leaving her no time to savour the kiss as Morgan pulled away from her
“Let’s have breakfast” there she goes again, not giving an order that needed an immediate response, or a request, it was a simple statement that made Maia's insides swirl as she felt a gazillion butterflies in her stomach at once.
She'd never felt this way when other clients asked this of her, or the few persons she's been on dates with in the past. But Morgan was different. She is someone who, once upon a time, Maia's life revolved around.
She looked back at the stack of files on her desk. Her signatures were already on most of them and the others she had to go through them thoroughly before signing. It was a file from the Transit department and they were requesting her signature for the departure of six containers.
And these containers wouldn’t leave for another two weeks so she had time to spare.
“One minute” Maia excused herself and walked back to her seat.
“You can have a seat,” she spoke to Morgan, pointing to the chair in the corner of her office. Once Morgan was seated, Maia hit button five on the fixed phone that was on the desk, penning for Louisa. She didn’t pick up, but soon, there was a light knock on the door before the door creek opened to reveal Louisa.
Maia urged her to come in and once she was standing before her desk, she pushed the stack of papers to her.
“These have already been treated. However, these have not” she explained, distinguishing each stack of files with her hands on them. “If you don’t have too much work to do, please help me go through these files from the Transit department and confirm that they’re ready to be signed”
“Is there any pressing matter that needs my assistance?” she questioned.
“Not for now Miss. I have gotten to human resource and they confirm to have given Masha two days leave and right now, I am trying to get a hold of her” Louisa replies.
“Thank you. Please cancel my meeting with Mr Machingtouch and push my eleven a.m. meeting with the CAMAS group of companies to two p.m.” Louisa nodded to all of Maia's orders.
“Great, thank you! Are you sure you’ve got everything under control? If it’s too much for you, just leave the files from the Transit department, I can handle that” the red-haired added, concerned that she may have put too much workload on her, therefore, overworking her.
She shook her head. “Thank you for your concern Miss Shelton, but I have everything under control,” she says with a reassuring smile on her face.
“Okay, thank you, Louisa,” Louisa took that as her queue to leave the office. Once she was gone, Morgan stood from her chair and wore her blue blazer that lay on the arm of the chair. She adjusted her hair, picked up her bag and turn to Morgan who was already standing close to her. Close enough to invade her personal space.
Again, she pulled Maia close to her, their skin bumping together in such a way that the red-haired could inhale the warmth of her breath. Something in Morgan's eyes flinch, it became darker sending waves of electricity throughout Maia's body. It was a look she knew all too well. A look that made her feel desired, feel wanted and also, made her a mess down there. And she was feeling all of that. Morgan's skin on hers, her eyes boring a hole into Maia's soul, was all it took for her arousal to rise as she began to feel the warmth down there. The older woman leaned in, but not too much. Their lips were inches apart, if one of them made a move, they would be kissing.
And just when Maia was about to make that move to connect their lips, Morgan pulled back, making the red-haired bite her bottom lip to hide her disappointment.
Morgan Daniels cleared her throat. “Shall we go?” she questioned and all Maia could do was nod because she didn’t trust her voice. Morgan stuck out her arm, inviting the red-haired to entangle her arms in hers, which she gratefully accepted. They walk out of her office, gaining the stairs of everyone as they walked past them.
Of course, Maia's employees didn’t know her sexual orientation. Not that it was any of their business, but after today, they will start to question things.
One, it was the first time she received flowers in the office.
Two, it was the first time having visitors in the office.
And three, it was the first time that she has had to drop everything to go out on a date, and Maia knew, in her heart of heart, that her demeanour gave it all away.
At last, they were out of the building.
The sky was filled with light blue clouds. Sun shining bright, briskly towering over them. It was hard to believe that barely an hour ago, it was raining cats and dogs. And now, the sun was out. Shining ever so bright. Morgan opened the car door for Maia.
The car parks in front of the Post office in Grassview. Opposite it, was a vast area where tall trees were scattered, serving as a shade for the food trucks that were parked there.
Maia Shelton had a sudden flash of memory of her, Janata, Morgan and Eleanor sitting under one of the shades, each one of them devouring a slice of pizza and burger, laughing over silly things. Laiba and Jonah couldn't make it because Laiba had just put to birth.
"You remember that time we came here?" Morgan Daniels was ahead of Maia when she questioned. She turned to face the red-haired, wind blowing and covering her face. She struggled to push a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Yeah, Janata got upset when she mistakenly threw her burger," a smile flashed on Maia's face as she reminiscence the past.
"Yeah, that was hilarious, tapping her feet on the ground as a small kid" Morgan adds, both of them bursting into a fit of laughter, drawing the attention of strangers.
When their laughter died, an awkward silence crept in as they looked into each other's eyes. It was a silence that expressed so much tension, making Maia's thoughts unintentionally drift back to earlier in her office.
Morgan Daniels cleared her throat, forcefully causing Maia to tear her gaze from her
"Shall we go?"
Together, they walked towards one of the food trucks and Maia took a sit under the shade while Morgan went up to order. The red-haired seized the opportunity to fish out her phone and inform Janata that Morgan had shown up at the office and that she was currently out on a date with her.
Her reply came in immediately. Her text read;
"OMG YASS BIATCHH" all in capitals. Maia could picture her facial expression as she read her message and a smile made its way to her face.
The red-haired closed that chat and opened her chat with Louisa and sent a quick message, asking for updates in the office and if she had any troubles with the files she left.
"I ordered a burger, extra fries and a soda for you," Morgan says, sitting opposite the younger woman. The smile that made its way to her face was inevitable. After all these years, Morgan still remembers what she ordered whenever they come here.
Maia Shelton placed her phone and the table and looked up at Morgan She offered her a shy smile that made her insides swirl. The fact that their legs were touching beneath the table didn't help Maia's pounding heart.
She was once again getting lost in Morgan's eyes. She wanted to say something, but she didn't know what. And Morgan didn't seem bothered by the silence between them because she looked so relaxed.
"I'm sorry about what happened in my house," Morgan's words left the red-haired stunned. Not with her apology no, but when she spoke up.
Maia cleared my throat. "Oh, it's okay,"
"Is it?" Morgan tilted her head quizzically, giving Maia a knowing look.
The red-haired knew what she was getting at. But truly, she was over that. She was overwhelmed after bumping into her again after so many years had passed and she was acting as though it never happened.
"Yes, really. It is okay" she assured her with a smile.
"Regardless, I owe you an apology," she says, clearing her throat and playing with her fingers on the table.
That was something Morgan did when she was nervous. Maia smiled, hoping that her smile will ease Morgan's anxiousness and enable her to say whatever was on her mind.
"Maia, I know I fucked up. In the worst way possible and saying sorry does not justify how remorseful I am. Ace was a mistake. A dumb mistake. I was curious and my curiosity caused me the only thing that made me happy. If I could, I would go back in time and take it all back, but I can't so all I can do now is try and make it up" she expressed. Maia could sense the sincerity in her words. However, there was something at the tip of her tongue that begged to be released.
"I know that look, and I know what you're thinking about. That night was the first and last time it happened" she said, leaving the red-haired stunned. Maia braced herself, making it seem as though she wasn't thinking about it.
"All I want is a chance to make it up to you. I don't just want to apologise, I want to show you how sorry I am" she says.
Maia Shelton looked into her eyes and smiled. But before she could reply, she was interrupted as their orders were being placed on the table.
"Thank you" she muttered to the waiter before he could walk away.
They dug into their food in silence, occasionally stealing glances at each other.
Maia Shelton had missed this place. The last time she was here was seven months ago. She tried as much to avoid taking the road by the post office so as not to be hit in the face by the memories of them.
"You didn't answer me"
"Huh?" Maia took a sip of her drink.
"Give me a chance to make it up to you," she says.
She was ordering, she wasn't asking. She was informing. So regardless of Maia's answer, she had a feeling deep within her gut that Morgan would do whatever she wanted.
And it will be foolish of her to push her away because she also wanted to give us a shot.
Maia didn't need to reply, as Morgan understood the meaning of the smile she gave her in response to her question.
