Let's have breakfast
“Oh wow! That’s a lot” Janata Snutch exclaimed once she saw Maia Shelton walk inside with the bouquet and chocolates in hand.
Maia smiled, taking note of how Morgan bought her favourite flowers and her favourite chocolates.
“These are from Morgan” Maia Shelton stated, placing the bouquet on the counter, before walking to get a flower vase to put the flowers in it.
“That’s thoughtful of her” Janata replied once Maia had gotten the vase and walked around to the kitchen counter to fill the vase with water.
Once filled, she placed the vase on the counter, carefully removed the flowers and put them in the vase, admiring it in the process. Maia smiled again. She could not recall the last time she received something like this from someone.
Thompson did not count. He was a creepy colleague in Customs who for the past twenty months, has been running behind the red-haired back. He found it hard to accept the fact that a woman is succeeding in a field that was once male domineering. Mr Machingtouch confessed to the red-haired that amongst them, he'd taken a bet of five million and in exchange, he had to woo her into being his girlfriend if possible marry her and have full control over her and run her company.
All of that for five million. Was her company worth just five million to him? Hell, was she worth just five million? In either case, a minus five million in his account wouldn’t affect his balance that much.
Regardless, Maia didn't take any offence to it. It just screamed one thing.
They were all scared of her. To go to that extent simply because you feel threatened by a woman and think the best way to go about it is by wooing her? Maia didn't mean to condescend, but she understood why they were having a tough time in the business world. They were all daft.
Maia Shelton wasn't moved by Thompson at first. His gifts and notes left her unhinged, until five months ago when he started overdoing it. He would come closer to her face when talking, he would drop silly remarks here and there, and he would praise her; not in the way that makes one feel special and blush. No, in that creepy way that sent shivers of fear down your spine. Especially when the smile is replaced with a lustful look.
Maia Shelton understood he was getting desperate because he had come to realise that he will never get what he wanted. Still, he didn’t want to back down.
Maia Shelton felt sorry for him. At some point, she wanted to give him that five million he was promised should he succeed in wooing her so he'd stop making a fool of himself. But then again, she was having the time of her life watching him ridicule himself.
Maia joined Janata in the living room after she had placed the vase in her bedroom. A big smile plastered on her face as she felt all kinds of emotion over the flowers Morgan brought. It made her feel desired and wanted. It was a great gesture on her end.
“So, what did she want?” Janata asks, biting a chocolate bar. Maia frowned. She did not want to believe that she was already eating the chocolates Morgan brought for her.
“Please tell me that is not my chocolate”
“Okay, then I won’t,” she says with a shrug, taking another bite of the chocolate.
“Janata!” she exclaimed.
“What! It’s meant to be eaten” she says, her mouth full.
The red-haired stared at her with rage flowing through her skin. Resisting the urge to pounce on her and strangle her.
“So, what did she want?” Maia rolled her eyes at Janata's question.
“A date,” Maia picked up the TV remote, hitting the play button on the series they were watching which she had paused when Morgan showed up. Janata picked up the TV remote and hit the pause button before placing it on the table.
“What?”
“I’m just trying to understand why. If she came here for a date, then kindly explain it to me. What the FUCK, are you doing here?” she questions, using the wrapping from the chocolate to smack Maia's arm, making her flinch.
“What the fuck” the red-haired exclaimed, running to the spot where she was smacked.
“That’s for being stupid. She came from Grassview to take you out on a date and you declined? Are you smoking expired coke?”
“She came unannounced and I refuse to be available at her beck and call”
“You dumbass, she just surprised you. And she’s putting in effort in trying to get you back. Isn’t that what you want? Effort"
Both girls were watching a Mexican series on Netflix by the name ‘Monarca’. Maia could have asked Morgan to give her ten minutes to get ready. Resisting the urge to tell her that was difficult, especially when she was looking so bloody fine. But it had to be done.
“Yes, but you don’t expect me to give in during her first try. She has to work for it” Maia folded her arms and stood her ground.
“If you keep that up she may give up”
Maia thought of it. And still, she decided to stand by her decision. She still had feelings for Morgan. She tried denying it but, the heart wants what it wants. And sbw wasn’t going to let these feelings she has for Morgan cloud her vision.
If Morgan wants her back, she’s going to have to work for it and be patient. If she gives up, then she has. Case closed.
“But thinking of it, how did Morgan get the address of the penthouse and the floor you’re staying at?” Maia frowned at the realization of this.
It never crossed her mind to ask about it. SheI was too stunned by her presence to think straight, but now that Janata brought it up, she couldn’t help but wonder. Her mind was racing as she thought of the ways Morgan could have gotten her address.
Perhaps from Resha? Maia's mind went back to the night at the lounge The memories were a bit fuzzy, maybe she gave the address to Resha?
“Maybe Resha?”.
“We were wasted as fuck. Maybe we did give her address then” she confirms.
“Okay, now can we move on with the series?” Maia questions and Janata nods. Maia rushed to the counter to get some of the chocolates Morgan brought before going back to the couch, picking up the TV remote and hitting the play button.
The weather was gloomy the following morning. The sky was tar-black and large dark clouds filled the sky. As Maia stood on the threshold of SBAC, she could see people running for cover under umbrellas. She rushed to her car, just in time as the clouds opened and spat out their beads of water.
Happy to have gotten to her car before it started falling, Maia put on her seatbelt, the roof of her car dancing with spray, enabling her to hear the murmuring of the rain through her window, sounding like bussing of angry bees.
She could only hope she made it to the office safely.
Of course, it wasn’t a must for the red-haired to show up to the office, but she had to set an example for her employees to follow. She had taken a trip last week to cheer Janata up in the middle of the week and she had decided that, come what may she will make it to the office for the rest of the week.
And that includes a downpour of rain.
When she got to the office, the rain had lessened and the drops faded into a musical chime. Eventually, the sun came out, casting slanted beams of light across the meadow. It rose and drifted mist-like towards the molten-gold sun. The image was so vivid that it stayed with her as she rushed into SGC
The cranking of her heels against the floor caused murmuring which she could hear the closer she got to her office. It was something she had gotten used to now. Her employees fidgetted last minute as they tried to organize themselves before she made it to the office.
Maia Shelton wasn’t a tyrant. But she had learned the hard way that, to gain respect, you had to let people think are unapproachable.
Sometimes, she would want to be all smiley with her employees, but the first time she tried that, it ended with one of her male employees thinking she was making a pass at him. Of course, that was the first, but also the very last time as she had him fired.
As Maia Shelton took the bend and walked into the office, everyone stood up, muttering ‘good morning’ as she passed their desk, and she nodded her head in acknowledgement. Deep inside, the red-haired couldn’t help but wonder how they made it so earlier to the office despite the rain.
As usual, her assistant Louisa, stood by the door with files in hand. She opened the door for Maia to walk in but the red-haired gave her the go-ahead to walk in first since she had files in her hand.
“Good morning Louisa. Have a seat”
She nodded and sat.
“Fill me in”
Maia Shelton opened her drawer and fished for bloc notes and jotted down everything Louisa was saying. She had an eleven a.m. meeting with the CAMAS group of companies, and a two p.m. meeting with Mr Machingtouch.
“Thank you, Louisa. Anything else”
She hesitated. “Uh yes, Mr Thompson wants to take you out for dinner this evening,” she says
“Cancel” Maia stated almost immediately, earning a smile from Louisa. Seems like she already knew her answer.
The smile on her face was replaced was a fearful expression. She had something she had on the tip of her tongue, but she feared blurting it out.
“What is it, Louisa? It looks like there’s something you want to say” Maia spoke, this time the tone in her voice changing from stern to less stern, hoping that it will give her the go-ahead to say what she is scared of saying.
“Uh, the thing is, I gave out your address to someone. They called my private line, saying they were friends of yours from way back and that they were currently standing in front of Miss Janata’s apartment, then I recall Miss Janata lives with you, and” she blabbed on.
So, it wasn’t Resha who gave my address to Morgan, the red-haired
It was Louisa...
“It’s alright Louisa. You did the right thing” Maia cut her off.
Relief spread through every fibre of Louisa's body.
“I’m sorry Miss Shelton, I should have gotten to you first,” she says, her head down.
“Yes, you should have. But that’s okay” Maia uttered again and she nods before standing from her seat. She was about to walk out of the office when Maia called out.
“Louisa?”
“Yes, Miss Shelton,”
“Has Masha returned? I noticed her desk was empty yesterday and today”. Louisa shook her head.
“Please get to human resource, and ask them how many days of absence was granted to Masha” Louisa nodded and left.
Maia Shelton. This is what she got for being lenient with employees. Unless she was mistaken, she'd given Masha a note when she sent her to human resource for a three days absence. She even asked her to take the weekend off too. She didn’t check into work yesterday and she didn’t today.
There wasn’t much she could do rather than wait and get a reply from human resources.
The red-haired immediately busied herself with the pile of files Louisa had brought to her office. Most of them needed her signature but she had to read through them to make sure she wasn't putting her signature on something incriminating.
She trusted her employees, but she had to make sure.
It wasn't long before the red-haired heard a knock on her door. She yelled "Come in", thinking it was Louisa who needed something, so she didn't look up.
The door creek opened and when she didn't hear anyone speak, Maia decided to look up, and that is when she saw Morgan standing there, holding a bouquet in her hand that was accompanied by a big smile on her face.
"Hi baby, let's have breakfast,"
It was an order, neither was it a plea nor a request.
it was just a statement that sent shivers down Maia's spine.
