Chapter 218

Chapter 218

After hearing Oscar's analysis, Emily looked at him in complete shock.

Just from an IP address and some photos posted on social media, he could figure out so much.

She had to admit, Jonathan made a really smart move by bringing Oscar into the police force.

"So all we need to do now is wait for them to walk into our trap!"

William exchanged a meaningful look with Joshua nearby.

After the meeting ended, Emily was about to leave when Daniel suddenly called out to her.

Daniel waited until William had left before saying in a low voice, "Jonathan wants to see you upstairs."

What did Jonathan want with her now?

On her way up, Emily mentally reviewed everything she'd done recently. As far as she could tell, she hadn't made any mistakes, right?

She arrived outside Jonathan's office and knocked gently on the door.

Jonathan put down his cup and turned to look at her, "Come in, Emily."

"Did I do something wrong at work recently?"

Emily asked cautiously.

Faced with Emily's direct approach, Jonathan hesitated for a moment, then gave an awkward laugh and explained, "No, Emily. I asked you here to talk about William. I'm sure you've heard about his father."

Emily's heart started racing.

Jonathan handed Emily a file, pointing to a line of small text and lowering his voice, "According to our informant's investigation, the priest at this Light Feather Church may be connected to William's father's case. He wouldn't have exposed himself normally, but this time..."

This time it was because Light Feather Church's overseas investments had failed badly, nearly wiping out all their assets.

Left with no choice, the church decided to take a desperate risk and go down this path.

The person who suggested this was Everett. He had also lost a lot of money and was on the verge of bankruptcy. Naturally, he wasn't willing to accept such an outcome!

After all, Everett used to be a big shot, and now he was about to become broke.

In the end, it all came down to greed!

Emily clutched the file, her thoughts growing heavy, "You mean..."

"You've been William's partner for so long, I think you understand him well. You know he's usually very level-headed, but... I'm still a bit worried. Right now our department is working with other departments on this case, and in some situations, if you could remind him..."

Jonathan looked like he wanted to say more but couldn't. He looked at Emily, hesitating for a long time, the words on the tip of his tongue but unable to come out.

What position should he be speaking from when saying these things to Emily?

As the police chief, or as William's uncle?

Emily understood what Jonathan meant. He didn't want to see William make any mistakes when arresting the Light Feather Church people.

And he didn't want it to affect William's work.

Emily nodded, "I understand what you're saying. Don't worry."

When she left Jonathan's office and headed back downstairs, she spotted a familiar figure at the stairway.

William had already finished all the prep work before the arrest, and the arrest warrant had been approved.

He looked at Emily coming down from upstairs and asked suspiciously, "What did Jonathan want with you?"

"Nothing much. He just told me that when we go to arrest that Light Feather Church priest, we should be careful and try to bring him back alive if possible."

Emily said in a low voice, her thoughts heavy, occasionally glancing at William.

They left the station together. Although the arrest warrant was ready, they still needed to find the priest and Everett's location.

Based on Oscar's analysis, they had identified several locations. These hotels were all pretty fancy, and it was likely that Everett's mistress would hold a party at one of them to celebrate giving birth to Everett's son.

"The prices here are really something—one meal costs two thousand dollars!"

Emily looked at the information on her phone and gasped at the expensive menu.

Her monthly salary was barely enough to cover these rich people's drinks for one meal.

William pointed to information about one of the restaurants, "I already had someone check. This restaurant will be booked for a private event next Monday. There's a good chance Everett will show up there."

Based on the geographical location and other factors, this hotel was a resort halfway up a mountain with excellent privacy.

The resort also had a man-made lake and beach inside, making it great for entertainment.

Emily looked at the photos and couldn't help shaking her head, "It must be nice to be rich!"

"The Johnson family isn't poor either, right?"

William raised an eyebrow at Emily. Hearing her complain like this, people who didn't know better would think she was some country girl who'd never seen anything.

Although the Johnson family treated Emily badly, given their status and position, even if they treated her poorly, she should have seen plenty of things ordinary people never get to experience.

Emily nodded, thought for a moment, then looked seriously into William's eyes, "Actually, I've let it go. I've already figured it out. I actually think my life now is pretty good—going between work and home, not making much money, but I feel pretty grounded."

William listened to her words with a confused expression, not quite understanding what she was trying to say.

"The things you can't choose in life are your background, your parents, and your family. But there are plenty of things you can do, like looking forward. Don't you think?"

She murmured softly, her bright eyes looking at William.

After hearing Emily's words, William paused, stayed silent for a moment, then finally said quietly, "People should look forward."

With those words, Emily felt much more at ease.

With the arrest operation coming up soon, they needed to have every detail covered before taking action.

They needed to be so thorough that not even a fly could get in or out of the hotel area!

William had even notified the hotel in advance to replace all the waiters and chefs with undercover officers.

They staked out near the resort for three whole days, eating, drinking, and sleeping practically in the car.

Emily peered out the car window with bloodshot eyes, "It's almost time, but there's not a single person in sight. Could there be a problem with your informant? Or... has Everett caught on to something and changed locations?"

"Impossible. There's been no news from the other hotels in the city either."

William said calmly and coolly, his face showing firm determination.
