Shifting Currents
Issei sat at the edge of her bed, staring at her phone. The screen glowed in the dim light of her room, casting long shadows across the walls. Ryan’s message still lingered, but she hadn’t responded. How could she? How could she explain the storm inside her when she didn’t even understand it herself?
The night before had felt like a turning point, but now everything seemed to blur together. Ryan’s words echoed in her mind: “I’m here when you’re ready.” She wasn’t sure if she was ready to be anything—not for him, not for herself. She wasn’t even sure who she was anymore.
She glanced over at the window, where the moonlight filtered through the curtains. The soft light seemed to mock her indecision, making the weight of the world feel even heavier. The morning had come and gone, and still, she hadn’t figured anything out.
A knock at the door broke her reverie. It was Clarissa. Of course.
She stood up quickly and opened the door, bracing herself for whatever was about to come. But when Clarissa walked in, her usual bluntness was replaced with something softer, more cautious. Her eyes searched Issei’s face for any sign of what had transpired since their last conversation.
"How are you?" Clarissa asked, her voice quieter than usual.
"I don't know," Issei replied, dropping her gaze to the floor. "I really don't know."
Clarissa sighed, walking over to sit beside her on the bed. "You don't have to have all the answers right now, you know. Sometimes, it's okay to just… sit with the confusion."
Issei gave a half-hearted nod but felt a knot tighten in her chest. Clarissa was right, of course. She didn’t have to know everything right away, but the weight of the unknown was suffocating. And then there was Ryan. The way he had looked at her. The way he had spoken to her. It had left her shaken, not because it was unwanted, but because it was exactly what she had been trying to avoid.
"I keep thinking about what happened with Ryan," Issei admitted, her voice small. "And I don’t know if it was real. Or if it’s just this… thing that’s not even worth exploring."
Clarissa tilted her head, studying her for a moment before speaking. "What do you mean ‘not worth exploring’?"
Issei let out a breath, frustration building in her chest. "I don’t know what’s happening between us. One minute, it’s like he sees me differently, and the next, I’m just confused. I’m not sure if I even want to figure it out. It’s just… too much."
Clarissa’s expression softened with understanding. "You’re scared, aren’t you?"
Issei’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t want to admit it, but the truth was, it terrified her. “Yeah. I think I am.”
Clarissa gave her a comforting smile. “It’s okay to be scared. But the longer you avoid it, the more complicated it’s going to get. If you want to know where things stand with Ryan, you have to take that first step. You can’t keep running away from it.”
Issei looked at her friend, feeling a sudden surge of gratitude. Clarissa always had a way of putting things into perspective, even when Issei didn’t want to hear them.
“I know,” she whispered. “But what if I’m wrong? What if I ruin everything?”
“You won’t know unless you try,” Clarissa said firmly. “You’ve already started something with him. Don’t let fear stop you from seeing where it could go.”
Before Issei could respond, her phone buzzed again. She glanced down, half-expecting it to be Ryan, but this time, it was a group text from her college classmates. The message read: "There’s a gathering at the park later today. Some of us are meeting up to talk about the final project. You should come!"
Issei’s first instinct was to ignore it. Her mind was still tangled up in thoughts of Ryan, and the last thing she wanted was to face a group of people pretending everything was fine. But then, a second message appeared, this time from Ryan himself.
Ryan: “Hey, I was thinking of stopping by the park later. Maybe you’ll be there?”
Her breath caught in her throat. Was he really trying to see her again? After everything that had happened? The emotions inside her were a whirlwind, a storm that she couldn’t seem to navigate. Was she ready for this?
Clarissa watched her, sensing the tension in the air. "Ryan?"
Issei nodded, still staring at the screen. "He wants to meet me. He’s… trying to figure this out too."
Clarissa didn’t say anything at first, just letting the moment sit between them. Finally, she spoke, her voice light but pointed. "Maybe this is exactly what you need. Some space to figure things out, but also a chance to just… see where things go."
Issei sighed, running her fingers through her hair. "I don’t know, Clarissa. I’m not sure I’m ready to face him. Not like this."
Clarissa gave her a reassuring smile. “It’s okay. But you can’t keep avoiding him forever. You’ve got to make a decision sooner or later, Issei. Trust yourself.”
The words rang in Issei’s ears long after Clarissa left. She felt torn between wanting to understand the connection with Ryan and fearing where it might lead. She had no idea where the relationship could go, but avoiding it seemed like the easier path.
But as she sat there, staring out the window, a part of her knew she couldn’t keep running. She had to confront her feelings head-on, even if it was the hardest thing she’d ever done.
With a deep breath, Issei stood and grabbed her jacket. She wasn’t sure if this was the right choice, but one thing was certain—she couldn’t hide forever.

The park was bustling with students when she arrived, the air filled with laughter and the sound of conversations. A small group had gathered near the fountain, including a few of her classmates who were deep in discussion about their upcoming project. But there, standing near the edge of the crowd, was Ryan.
He saw her before she could make her way toward him, his eyes locking onto hers. He gave a small, tentative wave, and for a moment, everything else seemed to fade away. The world around them didn’t matter. Just him. Just her.
Issei swallowed hard, fighting the nerves that bubbled up inside her. She walked over, trying to ignore the steady thud of her heart.
"Hey," she said softly, her voice betraying her nervousness.
Ryan gave her a small smile, his eyes filled with something unreadable. "Hey. I wasn’t sure if you’d come."
Issei shrugged, trying to play it cool. "I wasn’t sure either."
They stood there in an awkward silence for a moment, neither of them knowing what to say. But then Ryan broke the silence, his voice quiet but earnest.
“I meant what I said before, Issei. About being here when you’re ready. I just… I want you to know I’m not going anywhere, okay?”
Issei’s breath caught in her throat. She hadn’t expected him to be so… open. She had prepared herself for uncertainty, for hesitation, but here he was, offering her exactly what she had been too afraid to ask for.
"I don’t know what I want yet," Issei admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "But I’m here. I’m willing to figure it out."
Ryan’s eyes softened, and he nodded. "That’s all I can ask for."
And for the first time in what felt like ages, Issei felt a small spark of hope. Maybe this wouldn’t be as difficult as she’d made it out to be. Maybe they could figure it out together.
