Unraveling Threads

Issei’s phone buzzed again. She glanced down at the screen, expecting another message from Clarissa, but this time it was from Ryan. Her heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t expected him to reach out again so soon, especially after the awkward tension earlier. Was he waiting for an explanation? Or did he want to say something more?

With hesitation, she unlocked her phone and read the message.

Ryan: "I meant what I said earlier. Whenever you're ready to talk, I'll be here. Just... take care of yourself."

The simplicity of the message made her chest tighten. What was he trying to tell her? The subtle yet powerful words sent a jolt through her, reminding her of how much he’d already gotten under her skin in such a short time. She couldn’t deny the connection between them, but with that came an overwhelming sense of uncertainty. Was she ready to face this? Could she let herself be vulnerable? Could she allow herself to fall for someone like Ryan?

As much as she wanted to ignore the growing feelings, they were impossible to dismiss. And she couldn't hide from them forever.

She let out a shaky breath and typed back a quick reply, hoping to maintain some sense of control.

Issei: "Thanks. I’ll figure things out."

But as soon as she hit send, doubt crept in. Was that enough? Did it leave him with more questions than answers? She put her phone aside, letting it rest on the nightstand. But the buzzing didn’t stop. Clarissa. Of course.

This time, Issei didn’t hesitate. She picked up the phone, knowing the inevitable had to happen.

Clarissa: "I’m coming over. You better be ready to talk. No more hiding."

Issei sighed, rubbing her temples. She wasn’t ready to face Clarissa just yet, but there was no avoiding it. Her best friend would demand the truth, and there was no way Issei could keep up the façade any longer. She glanced at the clock. It was late afternoon now, and the day had been filled with a strange mix of tension and indecision. The longer she avoided the conversation with Clarissa, the harder it would be to keep pretending everything was fine.

She quickly pulled herself out of bed, changing into something more comfortable—a simple sweater and jeans. Nothing too flashy, but enough to feel like she was still in control of herself. As she made her way downstairs, she could already hear the doorbell ringing.

Clarissa.

Issei opened the door, and there she was—her best friend, standing with her arms crossed, face full of concern, and the unmistakable air of someone ready for a confrontation.

“I’m not going to ask again, Issei,” Clarissa said firmly, pushing past her into the living room without waiting for an invitation. “Where the hell were you last night? And don’t give me some half-assed excuse. I’ve been trying to get a hold of you for hours.”

Issei winced at the sharpness in her friend’s voice but knew Clarissa was only acting out of care. She felt a pang of guilt. She hadn’t meant to shut her out, but she hadn’t known how to explain everything either.

“I—” Issei began, but the words stuck in her throat. How could she explain everything that had happened? How could she talk about Ryan without sounding like she was caught up in some kind of whirlwind romance?

Clarissa turned, giving her a hard look. “Don’t say ‘I don’t know’ because we both know you do. So start talking.”

Issei swallowed, the weight of her emotions pressing down on her chest. She had been trying to avoid the conversation, but there was no running away anymore. Clarissa deserved the truth—at least as much of it as Issei was willing to share.

“I... stayed at Ryan’s,” Issei finally admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “After the party. I don’t remember much, but... we talked. And it was different. Everything was different.”

Clarissa’s eyebrows shot up. “Wait... what? You stayed at Ryan’s? What happened after the party, Issei? Are you telling me you spent the night with him?”

Issei’s face flushed, heat creeping up her neck. “It wasn’t like that. We didn’t... I don’t know what happened exactly. I just know it wasn’t what you think.”

Clarissa’s gaze softened, but her concern didn’t falter. She walked closer, her tone gentler. “Issei, you don’t have to explain everything right now. But I need you to be honest with me. Is he... is there something between you two?”

Issei took a deep breath, steadying herself. She hadn’t even fully processed her own feelings yet, let alone try to explain them to Clarissa. But now, with her best friend standing in front of her, she felt compelled to be honest.

“I don’t know,” she said finally, her voice filled with uncertainty. “There’s something there. But it’s complicated, Clarissa. I’m not sure if I can trust him—or myself. It’s just... too much right now.”

Clarissa nodded, her expression softening. She stepped forward and put a hand on Issei’s shoulder. “I get it. But listen to me. Whatever this is, you don’t have to face it alone. You’re my best friend. If you need me, I’ll be here. But you need to figure out what you really want.”

The words stung, but in a way, they were exactly what Issei needed to hear. Clarissa had always been the voice of reason, the one who wasn’t afraid to tell Issei when she was being reckless or hiding from her own emotions. And right now, Issei was hiding. She was hiding from Ryan, from her own heart, and from the mess that was about to unfold.

“I know,” Issei said quietly, her throat tightening. “I know. I just don’t want to make a mistake.”

Clarissa squeezed her shoulder and gave her a soft smile. “You won’t, as long as you listen to yourself. Just take it slow, okay? Don’t rush into anything.”

Issei nodded, grateful for her friend’s support. As much as she wanted to run from everything, she knew that Clarissa was right. She couldn’t keep avoiding the truth. The connection with Ryan was real, and she was going to have to confront it sooner or later. The problem was, she wasn’t sure if she was ready to face the consequences of what it might mean.

With a deep breath, Issei looked at Clarissa, determined. “Thanks, Clarissa. I think I needed to hear that.”

Clarissa smiled warmly, but there was a hint of concern in her eyes. “Just promise me you won’t shut me out again, okay?”

“I promise,” Issei replied, though she knew she couldn’t make that promise with certainty. There were still too many unanswered questions. Too many things she needed to figure out. But for now, she would take it one step at a time.

As the evening settled in, Issei’s phone buzzed once more. It was Ryan again.

Ryan: "Are you okay? I hope you're not upset with me. Just want you to know I’m here when you’re ready."

She stared at the message, feeling a wave of conflicting emotions crash over her. Was she ready to face him? Could she allow herself to be vulnerable again? She wasn’t sure.

But she knew one thing for sure—whatever happened next, it was going to change everything.
