Chapter 55 A trap for Eric
Eric had received a call from a private detective he had hired and was soon told that his uncle in-law and his mistress he was following were in the same city as himself. When he got the address, his heart sank. It seems Lilac was right.
“What is it?” Mark asked when he saw his dark face.
“It seems she were right,” Eric said and Mark sighed.
“I had hoped she wasn’t. But it is good that we rented the house next to them. That way we can get evidence as much as we need. But, how will you tell your aunt?” Mark asked and Eric went silent. Ethan, who was usually full of words kept silent at this moment.
“Since he dared cheat on my aunt, he should be ready for the consequences. We will take some leave and go to the house soon.” he said and they all agreed. They soon left the hotel arranged by the school and made their way to the house they had booked for the night.
It was the a few days after their camping trip and last day of their trip. They had only spent two days in camp before moving into a hotel in town. Lilac had even made a comment about the company saving money on hotel bills for two days by having them sleep in a bush, but her friends dragged her away before the other executes could respond.
The rest of the trip was spent between group activities for the different departments. Then some personal time, which Lyda spent painting, therefore having no time for anyone.
Lilac had been enjoying her vacation. But all good things have an end. She had left her hotel room and gone into town. She had spent a few hours buying random things, looking around, until she spotted a familiar face in town. It was Lydia, the secretary who was spreading rumors about Eric. She was with some friends walking past her. Lydia felt uncomfortable for some reason until she heard their discussion.
“Which house did they say Eric rented again, does your cousin know?” a girl called Lydia asked.
“Emerson Estate, no 15. I confirmed several times,” one of her friends answered.
“Good, I will pass the address to James,” The girl Lydia answered. Lilac hearing them talk, felt odd.
Could this be the girl who was plotting against Eric? If he really is renting a house today, it may not have anything to do with this girl Lydia. She told herself it was not her business and continued shopping. But as time flew past, the more uncomfortable she was. She felt she should at least tell Eric what was about to happen. She was at least his wife. He ge got in a scandal, people would only mock her.
Lilac had spent her entire life avoiding drama, would she just walk into one? No, she was just going there to take Eric out before he gets embarrassed. She knew that if these girls decided he had rented that place for Lydia, there was no way Eric would be able to defend himself. Her plan was to get there and get him about before what ever they were planning took place.
Making up her mind, she took out her phone to check the directions before taking a taxi all the way into the estate.
Unknown to her, in front of her taxi, in a luxury car, a driver was alerted. He kept looking outside his rearview mirror at the taxi behind.
“Madam, there is a taxi following us,” the driver informed the woman seated in the back.
“Who? Did you see their face?” the woman asked, slightly panicked.
“No, but there is a taxi that has been following us all this while. Please put on your seat belt, madam. I will try to loose them,” The driver said and started driving much faster. But no matter how fast her drove, Lilac’s taxi that was following the navigation on her phone was still on track. Making the car in front feel they were still being followed. The car dashed into the estate and took many turns to get to their home only to see Lilac’s taxi arrive at the house next to theirs. The woman at the back took a deep breath and stepped out of the car towards the taxi the moment Lilac stepped out.
“I have called the police, you better explain why you are following me,” the woman questioned Lilac.
“I am here to see someone,” Lilac was confused by what the woman was sprouting and stepped aside from her and walked towards the house, “Move, you are getting in the way,” Lilac did not bother with the woman even though she had heard the woman claiming to have called the police.
“Where do you think you are going?” The woman made to grab Lilac but she stepped aside. She did not bother taking in the woman's appearance.
“Who are you and why should you be followed? Are you a celebrity? Are you a president of a country or a mistress hiding from the legal wife, is that why you are so afraid of people on the same street as you? Move, I don’t have time for this nonsense,” Lilac scolded and the woman froze at her words enough for Lilac to step into the compound. She heard noise from the backyard and walked that way. For a moment, she wondered why this estate had no security. If it did, this situation would not have taken place as That girl Lydia would not have been able to enter the house Eric rented. The moment she stepped into the backyard, she saw the words, Lydia, Marry Me, written out on a sign and held up by some men behind a man kneeling before Lydia.
“What are you all doing?” Eric asked. For a second, he had thought that he had walked into the wrong house. This was definitely the house he rented.
“Eric,” the girl named Lydia noticed he had walked in and looked uncomfortable, but Lydia did not believe it.
“Why are you all here?” Ethan, Eric’s friend asked.
“Didn’t you invite the accounting department today? We just did not think someone would propose to Lydia here.” someone said. From the look on his face, he seemed to be waiting for a show. As the proposal has been interrupted, James, a dark haired man stood and pulled Lydia behind him.
“You must be Eric. I am James, Lydia’s fiance.” he greeted as though he had just forgotten that Lydia had not yet gotten a chance to answer them. James thought his man Eric looked familiar.
“Who invited you all here?” Mark asked dangerously. They had things to do , yet the accounting department was here.
“I am sorry about all this, Eric, I didn’t know you did not want me to invite my friends, I did not think James would…” she trailed off.
“I don’t understand, when did Eric invite you all here?” Mark asked and others looked around in confusion. At their words, many of them were slightly angered. Why did they make it sound as though they were uninvited guests?
“Even though someone stole your thunder Eric, there is no need to blame us for it. It is not out fault that the girl you like is in love with someone else.” someone said. They had all seen Eric in their company several times and thought he was no more than a staff.
“I am sorry, Eric, I am in love with James,” Lydia started to drop tears like rain.
“And what does your love have to do with being here?” Ethan almost lost it. What nonsense is this drama?
“This crying girl,” Mark called the crying Lydia, “Are you trying to claim to be in a relationship with Eric? Has Eric ever come around you before? Why are you acting as though you are wronged? Do you know who he is?” Mark asked.
“What are you saying? Everyone already knows you and Lydia are a thing, there is no need to deny her out of embarassment,” someone said what the others were thinking. Lilac saw the scene before her and was not sure why she came. She was already too late. There was no way he was going to be able to wash himself clean from this. Seeing things escalating to this point she wanted to leave before she was seen. But when she saw Eric’s cold face, she kind of felt amused and wanted to laugh. But she knew she had to clear the air to save herself from embarrassment. So Lilac had made her way to his side.
“Eric, what’s going on?” she asked and Eric looked down at Lilac that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.
“Sister in law,” Ethan and Mark called in shock the moment he saw her and the room stilled.
