Chapter Twenty Five
The air around them is thick with the scent of earth and pine, the sound of the forest humming with life as Kade leads Briar deeper into the clearing, where the pack waits. Her heart pounds in her chest, the rhythmic thud of it matching the beat of her breath. She can feel their eyes on her—intense, unwavering, calculating—and it makes her stomach twist with both excitement and unease.
Kade’s grip on her hand tightens slightly, as though sensing her hesitation. His fingers are warm, steady, grounding her as they move closer to the center of the pack. The wolves are arranged in a loose circle, their postures relaxed but alert. Briar’s eyes move from one to the other, taking in the sharpness of their eyes, the tension in their muscles, the undeniable sense of power that radiates from them all.
Hunter, the large dark-haired wolf who had spoken earlier, steps forward again, his gaze now softer, almost welcoming. “Briar,” he says, his voice deep and unyielding, “you’re here because Kade has chosen you, because you’re meant to be with him. But you must understand what it means to join us. It’s not just a title, not just a bond. It’s a responsibility.”
Kade steps forward, his presence demanding attention. “She knows that,” he says, his voice unwavering. “Briar has already shown that she’s willing to fight for us, just as we’ll fight for her. This is a bond, a blood bond. No one enters this pack lightly.”
Briar takes a deep breath, swallowing the lump in her throat as she looks around at the faces of the wolves, each one observing her with a sharp intensity. There’s a strange kind of calm in Kade’s words, a reassurance in his steady gaze. She isn’t just standing here as an outsider. She’s his, and that means something.
Hunter nods slowly. “Then, it’s time for her to understand what it means to stand among us. She must be initiated.”
Briar’s stomach drops. Initiation. The word hangs in the air like a challenge, something that carries weight and meaning. The pack doesn’t just accept anyone. She can feel the weight of their scrutiny bearing down on her, but she doesn’t step back. She’s here. She’s made the choice.
“Tell her what it means,” Kade says, his voice unwavering as he steps closer to Briar, his hand slipping to the small of her back, guiding her through the ritual.
Hunter’s eyes flash as he looks at Briar, his expression solemn. “Initiation is a sacred rite for those who are bound to the pack. It marks the beginning of your true bond with us, Briar. It is not just about your loyalty to Kade. It is about your loyalty to every single wolf here.” His gaze sweeps over the pack, meeting the eyes of each member. “We trust you with our lives. And in turn, we ask for that trust from you. The ritual will test your strength, your resolve, and your heart. If you are willing to stand with us, to fight for us, then you must prove it.”
Briar nods, though her pulse is pounding in her ears. She’s not sure what she’s about to face, but she knows this is the moment. There’s no turning back now. She’s not just stepping into Kade’s world; she’s stepping into something larger, something ancient and primal.
Kade steps beside her, his eyes softening. “You don’t have to do this if you’re not ready,” he murmurs, his hand finding hers again, warm and reassuring.
But Briar shakes her head, determination flickering in her eyes. “I’m ready. I trust you. I trust us.”
A silent agreement passes between them, and Kade steps back, his eyes never leaving her. The pack watches her, their expressions unreadable, but Briar can sense the respect they have for her, the anticipation hanging thick in the air.
Hunter nods, signaling for Briar to move into the center of the circle. Briar takes a deep breath, her feet moving one after the other, her body tense but resolute. As she reaches the center of the clearing, she feels the ground beneath her feet—solid, unyielding. She’s standing in the heart of the pack now, and she’s ready to prove she belongs.
A low, guttural growl ripples through the air, and Briar turns to find one of the wolves—an older male with a silver mane—stepping forward. His eyes glow in the moonlight, sharp and calculating. He looks her over, sizing her up with an intensity that makes her skin prickle.
“Your initiation,” he growls, his voice deep and gravelly, “will begin with a test of your strength.” His gaze flickers toward Kade. “Your mate must prove she has the endurance to survive among us. She will face us—all of us.”
Briar’s breath catches in her throat, but she doesn’t flinch. She can feel the pack’s energy building, the tension rising with every second. The wolves move into position around her, their eyes glinting, their muscles tensing in anticipation. She’s not sure what’s coming, but she feels the primal power of the pack closing in, ready to test her.
One by one, the wolves approach, circling her. Each of them is silent, waiting, watching, their movements fluid and graceful. Briar stands tall, her heart pounding, but her resolve unshaken. She’s here for Kade, and she’s here for the pack. She won’t back down.
The first wolf lunges at her, fast and sleek, but Briar is ready. She sidesteps, dodging the strike with a burst of agility she didn’t know she had. The wolf snaps at her, but she’s already on the move, her instincts kicking in, her body moving faster than she thought possible.
The second wolf comes at her from the other side, and this time, Briar doesn’t hesitate. She meets him head-on, her strength surprising even herself as she pushes him back with a sharp shove. She’s not just a bystander in this world—she’s becoming part of it. Part of them.
The wolves continue to circle, each one testing her, pushing her, challenging her. Briar moves with them, her body tiring, but her spirit never faltering. With every moment, she feels the bond between her and the pack grow stronger, the respect from each wolf building. She’s not just fighting to survive this initiation—she’s proving her place within this family.
Finally, the last wolf steps forward, a large, imposing figure. He pauses, his eyes scanning her closely. There’s a moment of silence, an unspoken challenge hanging in the air. And then, with a sharp growl, he lunges at her, and Briar meets him head-on. This time, there’s no hesitation. No fear. Just a deep, primal connection to the pack, to Kade, to herself.
They collide, and for a moment, everything goes black.
But when Briar opens her eyes again, she’s on the ground, breathless, her body sore but alive. The wolves are standing around her, their gazes softer now, more respectful. And standing above her, Kade’s eyes are filled with pride and something deeper. He pulls her into his arms, his voice low in her ear.
“You did it,” he murmurs, his breath hot against her skin. “You’re one of us now. You’ve proven yourself.”
Briar’s chest swells with something she can’t quite name—relief, pride, acceptance. For the first time in her life, she feels like she truly belongs.
And as she looks up at Kade, she knows that this is just the beginning.
