Chapter 210 Not A True Friend?
Chapter 210 Not A True Friend?
Kristen's POV
The next day weighs heavily upon me as she approach Sapphire's room, despite Maddy's warning to stay away from our friend since she's really sensitive and upset with me.
I can feel fear lingering in my eyes, the echoes of harsh words from the day before still resonates in my heart.
I was only trying to help until Sapphire got upset and unleashed all her anger and hurt at me. It's more like her finding someone to put the blame on, and I am the perfect choice. Even though all I want is to be there for her as a friend.
I've never seen Sapphire mour anyone before. Bruce is the first, and it's making me to realize that pain can change a person.
Determined to offer solace, I order the servants to open the door after they knocked and there was no response from my bestfriend.
When they comply, I see Sapphire sprawled on the floor in the same spot she was yesterday.
For a moment I gulp, wondering how to let the words out without offending her. Because being around her right now is dangerous, each move I make take feels like I am stepping into a quicksand or walking on eggshells.
"I brought some food for you, Sapphire. The servants are here to assist you. Please don't turn me away, I am here to help you," I implore, staring at her with pleading eyes and hoping she doesn't get mad, because even if she's grieving, I can't recognize her anymore.
Sapphire, clad in the same stained wedding dress, looks up with hollow eyes. The weight of grief bore down on her, evident in her disheveled appearance. She hasn't slept, and the tear-streaked evidence on her face speaks of a night spent in mourning.
"I don't need your help. Leave me be," She replies, with a bitter edge.
I hold my breath for a second because her voice sounds less convincing. Maybe she wants me around but don't know how to make it known because she feels a bit guilty for being harsh to me yesterday.
I give a go-ahead nod to the servants to make their way in with the trays of food.
And as the servants cautiously enter, a sharp scream erupted from Sapphire's lips. In an instant, the tray is sent flying, food scattering across the room.
It all happened in a manner of seconds when she jumped to her feet and did that.
My heart tightens in my chest.
She's not this way with everyone, why does it have to be me?
"Get out! Get out, all of you!" Wailing, she demands our departure.
The servants retreat, leaving me standing here, a mix
of concern and grief etching on my face.
I take a deep breath, summoning the courage to
approach my grieving friend. Because we can't continue like this when I care about her more than
anything in the world.
"Sapphire, please, let me help. I am only trying to ease your pain," I say, schooling my face into a neutral expression because I don't want her see me emotionally, nor do I want her to know how much she's hurt me.
What did I ever do to her? Has she been secretly jealous of me, before even Bruce's death?
"Help? You're all useless! Just get away from me!"
Sapphire snarls in rage.
"I'm your friend, Sapphire. We both cared for Bruce in our own different way." I explain calmly.
Yet, Sapphire's response is an onslaught of bitterness.
"Friend? You're not my friend! You, with your perfect life, your perfect husband. Things always works out for you, and when I am one step away from getting the perfect life, things go in ruins for me!"
Heartbroken and teary-eyed, I struggled to convey my intentions towards my best friend.
"Sapphire, I never wanted this. I'm here because I
care about you. We're both hurting, and I want to be
here for you."
"Caring? You don't know what it's like to lose the
person you love! You were never a true friend to me!" Sapphire accuses me, when I haven't done anything wrong to her. The words she just lash out are enough to inflict me wounds.
"You think you're a good friend? You have everything, don't you? A perfect marriage, a perfect life. It's your fault Bruce is dead!" Here comes Sapphiire's bitter outburst.
I am taken aback and wounded by her words. Call me
stupid, but I still try to reason with me friend even though I sense so much jealousy and bitterness.
"Sapphire, I never wanted to hurt you. I just wanted to be here for you," my voice is shaky because I am
hurting.
Why can't she believe me? Is she truly my friend?
Before the tension can escalate further, Alpha
Calhoun storms into the room, like he's been standing aside listening to everything until he decided he's had it up to his neck.
"Enough!" Calhoun roars.
Sapphire falls silent at the command, her rage
momentarily subdued. Calhoun's stern expression reveals his displeasure, but he refrains from
addressing Sapphire's words.
Instead, he focuses on me, understanding the distress
on my face.
"We're leaving," Calhoun says firmly, ignoring Sapphire's presence and seizes my arm, before guiding me out of the room.
And then he shuts the door behind us with a loud thud, his face is already full with anger.
While I let him pull me away as much as he wants, and
he doesn't even utter a word.
In the hallway, Calhoun finally turns to me, his anger
dispersing and concern spreading across his face. "I'm sorry you had to go through that, Kristen. Sapphire is in a lot of pain right now, but that doesn't
excuse her behavior." My husband lets this out.
Still processing the emotional turmoil, I nod.
"I just wanted to help, Calhoun. I never expected... that." It hurts even more to admit this.
"I know. Let's focus on supporting each other through this. Sapphire will come to realize she needs
us, even if she doesn't want to admit it right now." Calhoun tells me.
But as we walk away from Sapphire's room, Calhoun's stops me, by putting his hands on my shoulders. "Kristen, for now, stay away from Sapphire. I don't want you to get hurt anymore. I understand she's your friend, but it's not safe right now." He explains with a serious gaze. "Calhoun, I can't just abandon her. She needs someone right now." Right now, I am torn between
my loyalty to my friend and my husband's protective
stance.
"Kristen, listen to me. I don't want to see you hurt
any more than you already are. We'll bury Bruce, find his killer, and bring him to justice. But in the meantime, you're banned from visiting Sapphire. I won't have you subjected to more of her anger," Calhoun's expression has turned firm and his voice is
almost commanding.
Reluctant but understanding the weight of my husband's concern, I nod quietly.
"Okay, Calhoun. I'll stay away, but I hope she finds a
way to heal." I say at last.
A Calhoun nods. Before pulling me into a quick
embrace.
Bruce's death has been tough on us, but I still appreciate the fact that he's still so affectionate
towards me.
