Chapter 191 In This Together

Chapter 191 In This Together

Calhoun's POV
"Is it really you, Calhoun?" Kristen calls out to me with a shaky voice.
And when I nod, she hugs me so tightly as if she wants to get into my skin.
Thank fuck she remembers me now.
Whatever the fuck is going on, it's no good at all.
We've never been thrown in this position before, save for the time she was drugged by Jack and when she woke up, she couldn't recognize me.
Tonight, she ran away from me because she saw me as Theodore.
I looked through everywhere until I finally found her, walking alone on the road. Barefooted and wet like a homeless person.
A sob breaks from my wife when I help her to sit upright. It's a good thing she isn't acting up now, and she's even letting me hold her.
I refrain from sighing in relief because this is far from over, even though she sees me now and she's in my
arms.
"Kristen..." I say her name.
"I saw Theodore everywhere. At first, he appeared in my dream last night and haunted me, and now.." She's sobbing as she's explaining, and it gives out that she's damn serious about this.
The heck!
"I thought you were him all along," Kristen continues.
And I know her enough to say she's lying. She's telling the truth. Her behavior an hour ago says it all.
But her fears and tears are weighing me down, and it's so fucked up that she's in this position.
It feels like the more we stay together, the more the problems keep coming. Except this won't make me leave her. Never. She's been through so much for a girl her age.
"Calhoun, do you think I am insane?" Kristen looks at me with wide, innocent eyes.
"No, you're not," I shake my head because she sounds perfectly fine now, although she isn't.
"It feels like I am one step away from sanity," Kristen blurts out and looks away from me in shame.
"It's not true, you're perfectly okay," with my free hand, I pull her face back to mine through my hold on her chin.
"Don't tell lies to make me feel better, Calhoun. It makes me feel twice as bad as I do," she tells me.
"We'll look for a way to fix this," I mean every word because I can't let her go on like this.
"What If I am truly cursed?" Tears are brimming in her eyes when she says this more to herself than to
me.
"I don't need you talking now, let's get you home," I try to get her off the side of the road, but she doesn't let me.
"I am scared, I might hurt someone. Everyone will think I've lost my wits," Kristen rubs the side of her arm and lowers her head to her chest, seeming a little lost.
And my heart breaks at this gesture.
"You'll only hurt yourself if you overthink," that's the only thing I can say because trying to comfort her will rather worsen things.
"But I can't help it," Kristen snuffles, bites on her bottom lip. And her upper lip quivers as she chews.
"Just listen to me and stay calm, I'm not letting you out of my sight. I'll be here with you."
Kristen nods to this and eventually lets me gather her from the wet ground.
A car goes to a screeching halt a few yards away from
us.
"Alpha Calhoun," It's Bruce. And he's right here with Kristen's best friend.
They saw everything that transpired between me and my wife earlier.
"What's going on?" Sapphire inquires upon seeing her fragile and wet friend in my arms.
"Nothing happened," I am quick to speak up because I don't want Kristen answering any questions when this should be kept between the two of us, no matter how close these two are to us.
"We saw it all," Bruce puts his fists in his pockets as he sends me a questioning look.
"I said, nothing happened," my voice is stern because I am not in the mood to be questioned when there's a much pressing issue at hand and it has to do with my
wife.
When we're about to have peace, something just comes and blows it up. All the time.
Just fuck.
"Go back and continue your date, this is between me and my wife," I tell my beta, ensuring my voice is firm enough to not leave room for any protest.
"As you wish," Bruce holds a worried-looking Sapphire away from us.
Sighing for the umpteenth time tonight, I turn away
from them, still holding onto my wife.
Kristen is hiding her face in my chest.
Is she really seeing Theodore Fitzgerald's face everywhere? She confessed that her nightmare last night had to do with him.
Who would have thought the night would turn out
this way for us?
"I am sorry for running away like that," Kristen apologizes, still avoiding my eyes. I can tell she's feeling guilty when she's done nothing wrong.
"You don't have to apologize for anything, I am always here for you," I assure her, meaning every word.
"And I am sorry for causing you too much trouble," Kristen's voice sounds muffled because she's facepalming in shame and regret.
"Just stop apologizing," I implore in a low tone.
"I have too many problems, Calhoun. Maybe you need
a break from me," Kristen holds my gaze this time, with tearful red eyes.
"Stop talking nonsense," I snap because I am offended at her suggestion, when it's now she needs
me the most. How can she ever think I'll take a break from her when we're to be like this for life?
"I'll look into this issue and help you out of it," I make this known to her, my tone serious. "What if it's a curse for killing Theodore?" Kristen
raises her head from my chest and stares at me with a tearful gaze.
"What if I'm out in the open and this happens again?
People will think I'm a crazy person. Rumors will spread like wildfire within and outside our pack..." "I don't want to hurt you or Aiden.." the slight tremble in her voice gives out how afraid she is.
I am at a loss for words, unable to even think straight.
"I couldn't even recognize you or anyone," she adds.
"I'll get you help, Kristen," I make this promise, wanting to make her at least relax.
But she ends up sobbing instead, and the expression
on her face is wordlessly telling me she doesn't
believe the promise I made.
