Chapter 107 FOR ALL I CARE.
Asher
A knock came on the door, and I snapped my head towards it.
“Who?” I asked, a brow slightly raised but I didn't get an answer but rather, the door was pushed open and Irina walked in.
Irina's eyes widened as soon as she saw me by the window, she dropped the things in her hands on the desk by the bed before rushing to my side.
“You just recovered, you shouldn't expose yourself to cold.” She said, guiding me back to my bed.
I sat on the bed, and took a look at the things she had brought with her. “What's this?” I asked.
Irina rushed to the desk side, and picked up one of the bags. “This contains fruits, you can eat it later in the evening.” She paused, bringing out the other bag, “And this has some food that your mother prepared for you.” She said, pulling the flask out of the bag, she turned to me.
“Are you ready to eat?” I shook my head negatively and she sighed, returning the flask into the bag and dropping it on the desk.
“She has been visiting since she heard what happened to you. An emergency came up so she couldn't come, so she sent me to come here instead.” Irina said, taking a seat.
“How did she know that I've woken up?” I asked, raising a brow. Did Nathaniel contact her?
“The hospital told her. They also said you could be discharged tomorrow.” Irina replied and my gaze dropped.
“She asked me to pass a message.” She paused, and I raised my head to catch her eyes. “She's worried about your well-being and says she doesn't want to lose you as soon as she finds you. She asked if you could step down?”
At first, when she had asked that question, I found it surprising, and I didn't see any reason to step down. But now, I could see her reasoning.
I smiled. “I'll be careful. There's no need to step down.” I said, my smile growing larger when I remembered that the Syndicate was already taken down. “Moreover, there's nothing threatening me anymore.” I said and she nodded.
“The Syndicate has been cleared out entirely?” She asked and I nodded.
“Yes.” I replied. “There will be no murder of heirs and sons again.” I declared and she nodded.
“That's great. I'll tell her about it.” Irina got up to her feet. “Make sure to take the food, and the fruits too. I'll come to pick you up tomorrow.” She said, walking towards the door but I stopped her.
“I can return by myself.” I said but she didn't seem convinced.
“Your mother wouldn't allow that. Just relax and wait till I come.” She said before stepping out.
I heaved, sinking into my bed. Now that he has achieved his goal, he has no reason to stay here anymore. I wondered when I would get to see him again.
Early the next morning, Irina arrived in the hospital with a new set of clothes.
“She asked me to deliver this.” She dropped the clothes on the bed. “Change into them and we can get going.” She said,
I changed into new clothes and returned home. A whole feast was readied at home, and my mother leapt out of her seat when she saw me come in.
“You are finally back.” She hugged me without a second thought.
I stood frozen, her sudden hug leaving me without a chance to react. My hands stayed frozen, unsure of what to do.
She retracted, holding me by the shoulders as she scanned my body. “You've grown thinner.” She concluded, dragging me towards the table.
“I personally made a full course meal for you. Wash your hands and dig in.” She said, and I nodded.
The feast was soon over and Irina waved us goodbye before leaving.
My mother smiled at her retreating figure and it seemed to hold something underneath. She turned towards me. “What do you think of her?”
Still absorbed in my thoughts about Nathaniel, I nodded. “She's fine.” I replied and my mother nodded, a sheepish smile growing on her face. I soon realized what she implied but I couldn't be bothered to explain. I couldn't explain my relationship with Nathaniel and she would probably set me up with someone else if I rejected Irina. I would rather leave her believing there was something between us.
I returned to my room, and stood by the window, watching the door, like I expected him to come and bid me farewell.
I scoffed. He already asked me to not interfere in his matters. There was no way he would come to see me.
The door creaked open and I turned, snapping out of my thoughts. Dima walked in, taking an extra glance at me before he spoke.
“We've checked the surroundings, and investigated mysterious persons leaving there. There were no Syndicate members found.” He said, and I nodded.
“I think you've truly eliminated this threat to society.” Dima said and I smiled.
Nathaniel had finally gotten his revenge but he didn't even want me by his side to help celebrate it.
“Great.” I said, leaving the window side to take my seat.
Dima stayed, his head hung low.
“What's wrong? Is there more?” I asked, noticing that he wasn't ready to leave yet.
“Nathaniel will be leaving the city soon.”
I raised my head to catch his gaze, I wanted to ask more about it but I remembered his words and scoffed.
“Okay. It's about time they left.” I said and Dima retreated but I couldn't help but call him back.
“When will they be leaving?” I asked, keeping my head down, trying to avoid showing any hint of concern but Dima's words forced my head up.
“In about twenty more minutes.”
I scoffed. So, he really did not want to have anything to do with me anymore.
“Okay.” I replied and Dima left. I relaxed in my chair, since he didn't care to see me, I wouldn't try to find him.
