Chapter 48

L I N D Y

As soon as I opened my eyes, I found myself inside a room with a bright white ceiling over me. I tried to move on top of my head and felt a little lightheaded as I begin to sit up on the mattress.

“Oh thank goodness you are awake!” I see Doctor Fox approaching me. “You got me all so worried. Are you okay?”

I stare at her, “W-What happened?”

“You passed out yesterday. Are you hurt somewhere?”

I shake my head, “No. I just feel a little light headed. Am I in the hospital?”

She nods, “Yes. They called me up since I am your ob-gyn. I was so worried about you and so is Harry. I called him right away when I found out you fainted.”

I smiled weakly, “Thank you Doctor Fox.”

I look out of the window and it was already morning. The last time I remember I was in the police station and Martha was….

I gasped, “Where’s Martha?”

She looks at me with rueful eyes, “Oh dear, she is still in prison.”

“But she didn’t do it Doctor Fox! I know she didn’t because she couldn’t!”

“Okay, I know you are strongly against the decision but please do take it easy. You are lucky enough you didn’t bleed yesterday.” She sits next to me. “I know it’s hard for you to accept and I know you can’t accept this yet but we can’t do anything about it. She had her fingerprint on the evidence.”

She knows it, the police must have told her about everything. Thinking about how I wasn’t able to do anything to stop the policemen and Detective Martin from taking her away, I felt so useless as a best friend. I wasn’t able to defend her and I feel terribly sad and worse that she got in there because of me.

“It can’t be Martha.” I wept.

I cried and threw myself to her chest as I tug onto her top. She laced her arms around me and tried to hush me, “But Doctor Fox, I know Martha couldn’t do it. I know it can’t be her. Griffin just framed her.”

“But why would her fingerprint be on the evidence?”

I shake my head, “I don’t know. I don’t trust what those police are saying about her. Martha can never hurt me. She’s always defended me since we were kids and it would not make sense if it was her.”

“Lindy, I know you are going through something horrible but please do take care of yourself. You are carrying two lives inside you and getting all stressed and worked up is definitely not good for your body. Think about your kids!”

“I know…” I sobbed. “But I just can’t stop thinking about Martha. She’s inside a prison and… and it must feel so horrible to be in there. She doesn’t deserve to be in there.”

“I know dear. I know, for now, take it easy and relax okay?”

I nod.

“I’m so glad you are fine. Why don’t you eat breakfast?”

I nodded again and smiled.

Later that day, I was finally discharged as soon as they didn’t see any findings that was harmful to me and my pregnancy. I stayed at home and Doctor Fox kept me company because she didn’t want me to be alone after what happened in the station. I told her I wanted to visit Martha but then she advised me that it’s best if I rest in here for a few days because getting all worried might leads me to depression.

I felt really bad that I was not able to help Martha and I was not able to talk to her even after she was placed in prison. No matter how hard I try not to worry about my best friend, I just can’t. I haven’t even accepted the fact that she was behind all this.

It doesn’t make sense at all.

In the back of my head, I know it cannot be her.

My entire body, heart and mind will never accept that it’s her.

“Are you sure you will be okay in here?” Doctor Fox asks me.

I nod with a smile, “Doctor Fox, I owe you a lot for staying with me. I will be fine here. I will make sure I will lock the doors.”

She holds my arms, “I am worried about you.”

“Thank you.” I smiled. “I will be fine. I feel much better now.”

“Are you sure? I can stay here for the night with you.”

I shake my head, “Thank you but you have helped me enough. I owe you for helping me in the hospital and accompanying me here.”

“Well you are my patient and Harry has entrusted you to me no matter what happens.”

I smile at her words.

“He really loves and cares for you.” She adds and smiles at me.

“I feel the same way too and I am beyond thankful to have him in my life.”

“I am sure he feels the same way.” She cups my face. “Well, I have got to go now.”

I nod. “I will walk you out.”

“Oh no need, Lindy. I will be fine.” She tells me while she grabs her bag from the counter, “If you need anything, call me right away okay?”

I nod, “Thank you.”

“Rest well, you need a lot of it.”

I nod again, “Thank you, I will do that.”

I watch her as she finally heads out of the front door and even locked the doorknob for me. I was then alone inside the house and as the silence echoes throughout all corners of the building, I feel my heart feeling sad again as I see images of Martha screaming inside the police station while she was handcuffed behind her and being taken away.

It was too hurtful to see how she was begging those police officers and how she kept saying that she couldn’t do it. I am extremely gutted and I can’t stop feeling all these negative emotions inside me as it comes in waves. I begin to recall everything that happened and it makes me really awfully sad.

My phone was ringing and I know it was Harry calling but then I was too sad to move and too sad to even talk to him. There’s just so much going on in my life and I don’t know how I would be able to survive in this after such emotional trauma.

I laid on the living room floor crying my tears out and crying the pain out from my chest wishing that this would all go away.

The next day, I woke up on my bed.

Bed?

I don’t remember lying to bed last night.

Hell, I don’t even remember heading up to my room.

I slowly pulled myself up from the mattress, I looked around and found myself tucked on my bed. I thought I was hallucinating but I really thought that I had fallen asleep crying on the floor last night.

Wasn’t I?

Confused, I decided to drag myself out of my bed and noticed that it was already three in the afternoon. I was thankful that we don’t have classes for this whole week since it is university week and I have more time to stay home. I decided to head out of my room and go to the kitchen to make myself some food.

I stumbled myself down the staircase and halted midway as soon as I heard someone whistling downstairs. Lately I have been getting too edgy and getting a little too nervous when I hear things that frightens me way too easily even if it doesn’t really mean anything at all. I have been a little jumpy too and I get a little bit too emotional with some things.

I rushed downstairs and went to the kitchen and there I found Harry cooking.

I have never felt such comfort in my entire life.

I ran to him and hugged him from behind as tight as I could. I know he was surprised that I came from behind him but then he was quick to acknowledge my presence.

“You’re here.” I say while tears coming out from my eyes.

Harry slowly spins around and faces me before he gives me a long kiss as we kept ourselves in each other’s arms. Finally, we pulled ourselves away as he thumbs my tears over my cheeks.

“I flew here as soon as I heard.” He says.

“Thank you.” I hugged him again. “I have been so lost these past few days and I no longer know what to do.”

“I’m here. Don’t worry, I am here.”

“I thought someone came in.”

“I messaged you last night about my flight. I tried calling you.”

I pull myself away but kept my hands on his waist, “I know. I… had fallen asleep.”

“On the floor?” He arched a brow.

I sigh, “I just… I…” I peeled my hands away from him and covered my eyes with it. I begin to cry a little louder, “Martha doesn’t deserve to be in prison! Harry we have to help her.” I pulled my head up to him as my tears kept falling over my face.

I shake my head vigorously, “I know it can’t be her. Please. Please we have to do something to help her, Harry.”

He cups my face and wipes my tears away, “I know she means a lot to you.”

“She is. She needs an attorney to defend her. Please Harry. We have to help Martha. Please I am begging you.” I cried and pleaded.

“Oh Lindy. It pains me seeing you this way and you don’t have to beg baby. Don’t worry, I already made arrangements and I have called Attorney Browning to help with Martha’s case.”

A smile finally creeps on my face and I can’t stop myself from being happy. I threw myself to Harry and hugged him, “Thank you Harry! Thank you so much!”

He holds me tight and I feel incredibly safe.

Later that day, Harry and I lounged in the living room watching TV. I enjoyed the day with him and he even went with me to the police station to visit Martha. He reassured her that we will never stop fighting this case unless she is proven guilty. The fingerprint on the gift box is a very strong evidence against her and when I think about it, I feel hopeless but then Harry reassures me that we will win this and that we will never let Griffin drag Martha down with him.

“Why do you think Griffin did that?” Harry asks me.

“I have been curious about that too.” I answer. “I don’t know why she was involved.”

There was silence between us.

“Do you think she can do it?” I ask Harry.

“I… I don’t know baby.” He turns to me. “I asked her if she knew that I received the same gifts as well but her expression was natural. She didn’t know about it and I can really tell it from her eyes.”

I sigh heavily, “Harry I don’t want her there.”

“Lindy, Attorney Browning will do the everything she can to help win the case okay?”

I nod.

“But why was Martha’s fingerprint on the box?” He asks me.

I shake my head because I don’t know how in hell her fingerprints were there. “I don’t know… I have this gut feeling that she is being framed.”

“By who?”

“Griffin.”

He pauses, “What if there is someone else?”

My brows creasing, “What do you mean?”

“What if the main suspect isn’t Griffin nor Martha?”

“You mean to say there is someone else out there who is the real accomplice to Griffin’s crime?”

He nods, “What if Griffin is the accomplice and the real suspect is still outside?”

My heart raced in half a second. “Then… That could mean… Someone is still out there? That there’s still another reason to live in fear?”

Harry breathes out heavily and pulls me in close to his chest as he wraps his arms around me securing me, “It’s just a hunch.” He says. “Griffin’s already inside the place where he needs to be and there’s no need to worry now.”

I nod but I can’t help thinking that it could be possible.

Two days passed, Harry finally flew back to London right after we went for my prenatal check up. He came here to visit me before he starts their world tour a day after he arrives back home. That means, Harry will get busier in travelling again.

With all the things that had happened in my life, I already forgot that my stomach is now on its 34th week. I even almost forgot that I had an appointment with Doctor Fox if she didn’t even remind me. The thought of delivering the babies still hasn’t sink in because I was more focused on Martha’s case.

Another day passed, the news broke my peace when Detective Martin called in at around ten in the evening and told me that Griffin escaped prison. I asked him how it happened but all of them didn’t know. I made sure that I locked all the doors in my house in case he would come here and finish his revenge on me.

Out of fear, I wasn’t able to fall asleep. I decided to head down and make myself a glass of milk. The entire house was silent as I was mixing the hot water and the powdered together. But there was something off, I can hear subtle footsteps coming from behind me. I stopped dissolving the milk and I can still hear the footsteps.

I thought I was hallucinating or that I was hearing things but as soon as I saw a reflection on the black glass from my microwave, I knew someone was inside me. I quickly spin myself around, shocked to see…

“Bailey?” I gaped,

“Hello Lindy.” She greeted and slams the plastic chopping board against my cheek.
