Chapter 47

L I N D Y

“What?”

Harry sounded much surprise than me as we talked over the phone. I know he would have a hard time believing this too because he has known Martha. I know that he knows that Martha can never and could never ever do this to me.

“Martha was behind all this?” He adds,

“That’s base from Griffin’s statement.” I answered.

He took a long pause, “But that doesn’t make any sense.”

“I know and I don’t think it’s Martha.”

“It cannot be her.” He agrees with me.

“I have been telling the police that but they don’t trust me! I have known her since I was young. There’s just no way!” I tell him.

“Relax, okay?” Harry reminded me. “I am sure Griffin only said that to point the blame to another person. It cannot be Martha.”

There was another pause.

“But…” I trailed off.

“But?”

I took a second and sighed heavily as my head begins to hurt just thinking about this whole situation that I am in, “I’m just confused why Griffin knows her name.”

“Did she ever mentioned to you that she knew him?”

“No. And I remember when she first saw Griffin in Yale, she didn’t know him. It’s so confusing how he knew her when I have not even told him anything about my life and definitely not even Martha’s name.”

Harry breathes, “What do you feel about this whole thing?”

“There’s just….”I trailed off. “There’s just so much going on and some questions about why he knew her.”

“You doubt your own best friend?” Harry questioned.

“No, no. It isn’t like that.” I answered right away because I don’t feel like that at all.

“Then what is it?” He asks.

“I am just shocked that Griffin knows her full name. I am utterly shocked why he brought her up when he was being questioned.” I breathe out anxiously, “I just wish this would all end soon so that Martha can finally go home and me too.”

“I am sure it’ll be quicker. Just hang in there.”

“Lindy?” I pulled my head up and found a policeman from earlier standing right across me. “The investigation is about to start.” He tells me.

I nod, “Harry, I will call you later. The investigation is about to start. I love you.”

“I love you too. Please be careful.”

“Thank you, you too.”

As soon as the call ended, the policeman began to lead me to a room which was just right where I was sitting down. Inside the investigating room, Martha was sitting right across Detective Martin while I was in another room right behind the mirror glass together with two other policemen and another detective named Detective Johnson.

My heart was just beating like crazy inside my chest. For some reason, I am nervous for her even though I am sure that she is innocent. But then I feel like they are going to pull her down just because Griffin acted as if he was an eye witness for this who charade he is playing off.

“Can you please tell us your location for the past three weeks?” Detective Martin asks.

“I was in Philadelphia.” Martha answers. “Mostly.”

“When did you last visit Lindy? Before this week.”

“It was…about two months ago or more. I am not sure.”

I nod in agreement, “That’s true.” I commented, allowing the police to hear it.

Detective Martin pushes the red box in front of Martha, “Is this familiar to you?”

“Well, yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Lindy told me about these gifts that she has been receiving.” Martha answers calmly.

It can’t be Martha. I know and I am sure about it. I thought to myself.

“Okay.” Detective Martin opens the box and pulls out the baby’s clothes and placed it in front of her. “How about this one? Familiar?”

“No. But Lindy told me she received a baby’s clothes.”

“Miss Stewart.” Detective leans forward and I can see Martha’s teary eyes. “Do you have any form of relationship with Griffin?”

“What?! No!” Martha says firmly.

“Have you talked to him before?”

“No! I never talked to him. I told you, I don’t know that guy and I don’t know why he knew about me!”

Detective Martin sighs heavily, “Where were on the 12th of August?”

That was the same date when the first time I got the gift.

“I can’t remember but I am sure that I was not in Connecticut.” Martha answers. “I think I was sick that time and stayed home.”

Detective Martin nods, “Can anyone attest to your claim?”

“No, because I was alone and my roommate was not around for the whole week.”

“I see.” He answers her. “Then how can you prove your innocence?”

“I didn’t do any of this!” Martha begins to stomp her hands against the table. “I don’t know why you are pointing the blame at me just because Griffin mentioned my name! I can never hurt and harm Lindy! This is so useless! In the first place, I need to have an attorney before I can give you my statement!”

“You’re not innocent not until you are proven not guilty.”

“And you’re going to lock me up here?! I didn’t do anything wrong!”

“We will see once we get a hold of the fingerprint found on one of the item.”

Martha nods, “Fine! Because I am sure it isn’t mine!”

My mind feels too heavy just thinking about this non-sense. Martha can never hurt me and I am sure about that. I need to talk to Griffin and ask him why he knows Martha. I need to know why he brought it up because Martha absolutely has no ulterior motive to do this against me.

She is my best friend. She would never betray me.

After minutes, I was the one interviewed by Detective Martin inside a different room. I was nervous as hell because I don’t know how things are going to go and how things are going to end tonight. I don’t want Martha to be imprisoned because I know she is innocent and she can never betray me.

He offered a cup of hot tea which I accepted, “Thank you.” I say.

“You’re welcome. How do you feel?”

“I don’t think it’s Martha.” I answered differently. “She can never do that to me. She has no motive.”

“Jealousy can be a motive.”

My brows creasing as I watch him sit on his chair, “Martha has never been jealous of me. She has always been so supportive.”

He nods, “How long have you been friends?”

“Since I was five. There’s just no way she would betray me! And if she did, she could have done that a long time ago.”

Detective Martin answers me with another nod, ”I know this is hard for you to accept but we will know as soon as the result is out, okay?”

I scoff, “Are you really saying that Martha really did those things to me!?”

“Lindy.” He hollers with a serious tone in his voice. “I know you are having a hard time but please do try to understand that unless she is proven not guilty then we cannot release her. She is still considered as one of the suspects knowing Griffin had mentioned her from his statement.”

“Griffin is lying!” I exclaimed. “He could be framing Martha!”

“Why would he do that?” He asks me. “Of all people, why would he frame your best friend?”

“I honestly don’t know why.” I shake my head, “But that guy’s a psycho! Also, Harry doesn’t even think that Martha can do this.”

“I know because she is close to you.”

“Please stop talking like you are sure she is the suspect when there is no proof to prove that she’s really done something to me.”

“I’m sorry.” He says right away. “I didn’t mean it that way.”

I breathe heavily, “Can she be released and stay in my house while waiting for the fingerprint result? She’s harmless and--”

He shakes his head, “I’m sorry. We cannot do that. It’s for your safety as well Lindy.”

“But…”

“Don’t worry, as soon as the fingerprint results are done then we can release her if she isn’t a part of this.”

“She isn’t. I want to talk to her.” I say.

He nods, “Please assist her.” He gestures his hand to the policeman who was standing in the corner of the room.

“Thank you.” I answered.

The policeman walks with me as he leads me to another room where Martha was being held. I have never been able to talk to her since we got here since the police and investigators kept asking her all these nonsensical questions. As soon as I entered the room and Martha saw me, she cried and stood on her seat and rushes to my side.

I embraced her as tight as I could, “Martha.”

She weeps, “Oh my God Lindy. I’m so glad to see you. I feel like I am going to lose my mind being here.”

I rub her spine, “It was so hard for me to talk to you. How are you?” I pull myself away from her. “Are you okay?”

“I’m not.” She wipes. “Everything is so crazy and I can’t believe that these people actually believe Griffin’s lies!”

“I know. Don’t worry, as soon as the fingerprint is released and you will be proven not guilty.” I smile at her.

“When are they going to release me?” Martha panics and I can see how scared she is being here. If I was here I would lose my insanity too knowing that I am innocent.

“We still need the fingerprint first.”

She sighs, “I don’t know why they cannot trust me!”

“Don’t worry. I trust you.” I smile at her.

I decided to stay behind and spend time talking with her until I requested to talk with Griffin. I feel like if I talk to him maybe I can get something from him. The policeman showed me again where Griffin was placed and I see him inside his own cell where he was sitting on the ground. His face lit up as soon as he saw me and flashes me a smile that made him look like a creep.

“Well if it isn’t my favorite human.” He commented.

I finally stood right in front of the bars and watch him stand on his feet still with that stupidly evil grin. He asked, “Missed me?”

“Why are you dragging my best friend with you?!”

He laughs, “Ah so she is finally caught. Good.”

“Why are you doing this?!” I cried. “I have never done anything to you! Why?! What do you need?!”

“Lindy, please relax.” The policeman reminded me.

I didn’t listen to him. “What do you want from me?! Why are you trying to get fun from ruining my life?!”

He smiles as if he is satisfied. “Such an innocent woman.”

“Why do you know Jolene?” I ask as I clenched my fist.

He keeps his smile and didn’t answer.

“Why do you fucking know her?!” I screamed and grabbed the bars while jostling it back and forth forcefully. “Why you asshole?!”

“We want what we want.”

“We?” I parroted.

He begins to walk away from me and sits back down on the floor. He looks back at me annoyingly still smiling at me. “Who’s we?!” I call out.

He didn’t answer and just stared at me.

“Who is we?!” I screamed again. “I know it isn’t Martha so who is it?!”

Griffin shrugs his shoulders and didn’t even answer anything.

“You are going to fucking rot in jail.” I spat as I point my finger at him.

He raises his hands over his shoulders and makes that annoying face. “She’s already here with me.” He answers.

“Fuck you.” I cursed angrily as I marched my way out of that hell while wiping my tears off my cheeks.

“Good! You’re here.” Detective Martin calls out to me as he marches my way. “The results are out.”

“Really?” I say breathless. “It doesn’t match right?”

He hands me a paper and says, “It’s a 100% match.”

“What?!” I gaped.

Out in a spur of moment, I hear Martha screaming while she was being held by two policemen on her arms. She keeps wiggling away but she had her hands tied behind her and she is finally handcuffed. She cries and cries and I was beginning to cry again while my feet slowly drags me towards where she was being taken to.

“Somebody framed me!!” She screamed. “I cannot do that to my own best friend!! Someone is framing me! It isn’t me!!”

“Martha…” I sobbed. “No… There’s gotta be a mistake.”

My heart is hurting so much that I can feel my stomach beginning to hurt a lot too. This is a mistake. This is a freaking mistake. Those words kept repeating inside my head because I cannot accept this. Martha stares at me while my visions were getting blurrier with my tears. I reach out to her because I cannot accept all this.

“Martha… No… She cannot do this to me.” I cried.

“Lindy… I didn’t do it. Please. Believe me! I don’t know why my fingerprint was there.” She cries. “You have to trust me. You have to believe me!”

“Martha… Mar--” I cut myself off and I feel my heart beginning to tightening.

I can’t breathe and I feel myself hyperventilating and my heart is hurting a lot.

“Lindy? Are you okay?” Detective Martin asks me.

My vision begins to blurry and my stomach is hurting too.

Then everything went blank.
