Chapter 148 Obviously Guilty
I smirked to myself. Hayden was on his deathbed; who'd bother trying to hurt him?
The doctor chimed in, "We've mentioned before, the patient could pass away at any moment. He's old, his emotions are all over the place, and he can't handle any stress."
Nolan wasn't having it. He stormed out and demanded, "What did my dad say to you before he died?"
"Grandpa Hayden said my parents' car accident wasn't an accident," I noticed Nolan's face change, so I kept going, "He said it was his fault, asked for my forgiveness, and promised me half of his antique collection as compensation."
"Why?" Nolan was taken aback, then quickly got heated.
"Who knows, maybe he didn't even make a will, just said it offhand. Nolan, chill out," I shrugged.
"How can I not worry? Emily, why couldn't you be smarter? If you'd called security right away, maybe Ryan wouldn't be dead, and Preston wouldn't be facing the death penalty!"
"So it was all my fault? As his dad, shouldn't you think about how you raised a son who turned into a murderer?"
"Emily!" Nolan was on the edge, ready to hit me, but Daniel stepped in, giving him a warning look.
"Some things run in the family, Nolan. Could it be you're a murderer too?" I stared into Nolan's eyes and asked again.
"What kind of crap are you spouting!"
"I'm just asking, Nolan. You're so worked up, you seem a bit guilty." I wasn't sure who the killer was, but someone was gunning for the Taylor Group, and even Preston's situation might not be an accident.
So, I suspected Nolan even more.
Nolan shot back, "What am I guilty of! Emily, you just love to overthink!"
"If I didn't overthink, how could I have guessed Grandpa Hayden might be in trouble? Nolan, you're the same. Now that Grandpa Hayden's dead, you want to blame me, saying I caused his death. I've told the truth, but you still won't let it go. How about calling the cops? Let the forensic doctor check how Grandpa Hayden died, see if someone messed with his meds. All this needs to be investigated!" I said this on purpose. Nolan just sneered, but Ella in the ward turned and glared at me.
I lowered my head and sent a message to Samuel. Even though Hayden was dead, Samuel, as the family doctor, still lived in Crystal Haven Estate.
As long as Samuel was still Hayden's family doctor, he should do his job and check Hayden's leftover meds. There shouldn't be any issues.
The Taylor family was already in chaos, so why not stir the pot a bit more?
"What are you doing? Calling the cops? Damn it, I just said a few words to you, and you really want to call the cops?" Nolan was starting to panic.
"Relax, Nolan, I didn't call the cops," I said with a smile. "I'm just really curious why Grandpa Hayden, on his deathbed, would bring up my parents' accident. It's hard to believe."
"His mind was a bit foggy. He started talking nonsense when he was in a coma, you know that. His words can't be trusted, and you don't need to take the verbal inheritance seriously." Nolan said this and went back into the ward.
Not long after, the cops showed up at the hospital with a lawyer. They saw me and nodded.
Logically, the cops should have had at least one or two officers stationed at the hospital. After all, before Preston was caught, he could have shown up to harm Hayden again.
I thought they came a bit late.
Maybe Preston came after Hayden woke up but left before I arrived.
The lawyer seemed familiar with the Taylor family. He greeted everyone and then asked, "Excuse me, has Ms. Johnson arrived?"
"What do you mean? Reading my dad's will, and an outsider has to be present!" Nolan said, clearly annoyed. Mason and Elizabeth exchanged glances and looked at me, puzzled.
"Mr. Hayden Taylor's will includes some property bequeathed to Ms. Johnson, so naturally, Ms. Johnson needs to be present for the reading," the lawyer explained, turning to the two cops.
The two cops nodded, signaling him to go ahead and read the will.
Hayden's will mentioned his collection of antiques, and half of it was left to me.
"Why?" Nolan demanded.
"Mr. Hayden Taylor anticipated that you would ask why. He said this is what the Taylor family owes Ms. Johnson," the lawyer replied.
I sneered, "He's using these antiques to trade for my parents' lives?"
"Don't talk nonsense in front of the cops!" Nolan pointed at me and shouted.
"Mr. Nolan Taylor, calm down and let the lawyer finish reading the will," the cop reminded him.
Elizabeth suspiciously whispered to Mason, "What's going on? Wasn't Emily's parents' death an accident? This has nothing to do with you, right?"
"What does this have to do with me? If I killed them, could I get the technology they had?" Mason quickly denied.
