Chapter 794 Another Surprise
Chapter 794 Another Surprise
William's heart sank. He shook her frantically and called her name over and over.
"Margaret, wake up. Come on, wake up."
No matter how hard he shook her, she just lay there, dead to the world.
William called an ambulance and rushed her to the hospital.
He stood outside the room, pacing anxiously. When he saw Margaret's doctor heading in, he stepped right into his path.
"Doctor, what's wrong with her? She was completely fine last night. This morning I can't wake her up at all."
If this hadn't happened before, William would have been out of his mind with panic.
"Try to relax, sir." The doctor gave him a reassuring look, then turned and walked into the room.
William stood alone outside, watching the minutes tick by with no sign of Margaret coming out.
Dark thoughts started creeping in — he was terrified that everything was starting all over again.
An hour later, Margaret was wheeled out. The doctor came out smiling and pulled William aside.
"Surely you know how fragile your wife's health is?" William stumbled over his words under the doctor's pointed gaze.
He did know Margaret wasn't well — but she'd seemed to be getting better lately. She'd even been busy helping Kevin with all sorts of plans, so he thought things were slowly turning around.
"So what's actually wrong with her?"
The doctor smiled and studied him for a moment. "Your wife is pregnant."
William's knees nearly gave out. He grabbed the wall to steady himself.
"You're... sure?" He was so worked up he could barely get the words out.
"About two months along. Her body is very weak though — she needs complete rest." William nodded again and again.
For both of them, this was the best news in the world.
When he got back to the room, Margaret was already awake.
"I fainted again?" Her voice was hoarse, and she looked up at him with tired eyes.
"I've got good news and bad news. Which do you want first?" William held her hand, his voice soft and gentle.
"Bad news." Margaret gave a weak smile. She'd always felt like good news never really came for her.
"Your body is worn out. You need to rest. Put work aside for now and focus on taking care of yourself."
"And the good news?" Margaret pressed.
"We're having a baby." William could barely hold back his smile as he said it.
Margaret froze. Her eyes filled with tears almost instantly, and she looked at him in disbelief. "Really? I'm... actually pregnant?"
After losing their first child, she had grieved for a long time. She'd quietly accepted that she might never have a child of her own.
And yet here it was — the thing she'd wished for had actually come true.
Margaret slowly raised her hand and rested it gently on her flat stomach, as if trying to feel the tiny life inside.
"We're really having a baby?" she asked again, afraid it might all be a dream.
William nodded firmly. That was when it finally sank in for her.
Against all odds, she was going to be a mother. This time, she would do everything in her power to protect this child.
"We already lost one... This baby is so precious. Until things are stable, we can't tell anyone." The fear of going through that pain again made her careful.
William felt the same way.
They let themselves sit in the quiet joy of it — two people who were going to be parents.
After a few days in the hospital, they went home. William took over every household task and hired three live-in helpers to look after Margaret. He moved most of his work home too, making sure she was completely taken care of.
"Where are you going?" William watched with concern as Margaret went through her closet, trying on one outfit after another.
"I haven't been to the office in ages," she said. "I need to go sort a few things out."
William grabbed his coat to go with her without hesitation.
"I'm fine, really. You don't have to hover — I know my limits."
No matter what she said, William wouldn't hear it. He insisted on driving her himself.
Even after half a month away, the company was running smoothly. Margaret called the department heads into her office for a meeting.
"What's going on with Ms. Scott? Is she going on a trip or something?" A few of them whispered among themselves.
"She's been gone forever — why'd she suddenly show up today?"
They were still chatting away when they noticed Margaret standing in the doorway.
"Sorry to pull everyone away from work for a bit." Margaret had always been easy-going with her team, and the company had a warm atmosphere because of it.
"Not at all, Ms. Scott."
"Please, don't mention it."
A ripple of polite responses went around the room.
"Alright, let's skip the pleasantries. I called you all in because there are a few things I need to hand off."
Under the table, Margaret's hand drifted quietly to her stomach now and then, as if checking in with the small life growing there.
"I have some personal matters to deal with, so I'll be stepping back for a while. Day-to-day operations will be in each of your hands. Send me a monthly summary by email."
"If anything urgent comes up, call me directly."
Normally, Margaret would have handled everything herself. But starting today, she had someone else to put first.
She was not going to lose this baby the way she'd lost the last one.
The managers exchanged glances. This didn't sound like the Margaret they knew.
"Boss, is everything okay?" someone finally asked.
Margaret smiled and waved it off. "I'm fine. You've all been here long enough — it's time to give you the chance to really run things."
The meeting was short and to the point, wrapping up in under ten minutes.
She knew that once they left the room, the whole office would be talking about how unlike herself she'd seemed today. But Margaret found she didn't care anymore.
She went back to her office and noticed William was gone.
"Where's William?" she asked her assistant in passing.
"He left after you went in. Didn't say where."
Margaret nodded and let it go — his company had been busy lately.
With everything wrapped up, she headed home. Just as she stepped out of the building, she spotted Danielle's car parked out front.
"What are you doing here? It's been forever!" Margaret walked over with a smile.
Danielle got out and went around to the passenger side, pulling the door open for her.
"Where are you taking me?" Margaret laughed at Danielle's expression — she clearly had something up her sleeve.
"Just get in. You'll see when we get there."
Before Margaret could say another word, Danielle was already steering her into the seat with a grin.
Danielle stayed quiet the whole ride, just sitting there with a little smile on her lips. Margaret kept glancing over, trying to figure out what she was up to — but couldn't get a read on her at all.
