Chapter 49 Rival Family
Chapter 49 Rival Family
Rival Family
"The Rossi boy has finally shown us his weakness," Marco Benedetti said, sliding a photograph across the mahogany conference table to the assembled men. "And it's exactly what we've been waiting for."
The photograph showed Sophia and Ethan leaving the mansion together, captured by a long-range camera just hours after their confrontation with Diego. In the image, Ethan's protective posture and the way he held Sophia's hand told a story that every man in the room could read clearly.
"She's pretty," commented Vincent Torrino, leaning back in his leather chair with a predatory smile. "I can see why he'd risk everything for her. But that just makes him stupid."
"Stupid, maybe," Marco agreed, retrieving the photograph and studying it with calculating eyes. "But useful to us. For months, we've been looking for a way to get to Ethan Rossi, to find some leverage that would force him to make mistakes. And now he's handed us exactly what we need."
The conference room in the Benedetti family's downtown headquarters was filled with the leadership of three families that had once competed with each other but were now united by a common goal… the destruction of Rossi power. The alliance had been months in the making, built on shared resentment and mutual benefit.
"Tell me about the girl," said Carmen DeLuca, the only woman in the room and arguably the most dangerous. Her family specialized in information gathering, and her network of contacts extended into every level of society. "What do we know about her background, her vulnerabilities?"
Marco nodded to one of his lieutenants, who opened a thick file and began reading. "Sophia Martin, age twenty-three, former waitress at O'Malley's bar. Parents deceased, one brother with autism who requires specialized medical care. Married Ethan Rossi approximately six months ago under unusual circumstances."
"What kind of unusual circumstances?" Vincent asked.
"According to our sources inside the Rossi organization, she threw dirty water on Ethan during what she thought was an assault. Turned out to be a misunderstanding involving his sister, but it led to her owing the family money she couldn't pay. Marriage was offered as an alternative to... other forms of debt collection."
Carmen laughed, the sound sharp and amused. "So she's not some mafia princess who understands the game. She's a civilian who got caught up in something she doesn't comprehend. That makes her even more perfect for our purposes."
"Exactly," Marco said, his smile widening. "She doesn't know the rules, doesn't understand the larger implications of the war we're fighting. She'll be easy to manipulate, easy to use against her husband."
"What's the current situation?" asked Tommy Benedetti, Marco's younger brother and the family's head of security. "Are they still at the mansion?"
"No," Marco replied, his expression growing more serious. "This is where it gets interesting. Our surveillance indicates they've left the Rossi estate entirely. There was some kind of family confrontation yesterday morning… witnesses say Diego kicked them both out permanently."
The room fell silent as the implications of this information sank in. The men around the table were all veterans of family warfare, and they understood what this development meant better than anyone.
"He chose her over his own blood," Vincent said slowly, his voice filled with admiration and disgust in equal measure. "The idiot actually chose some waitress over his birthright as heir to the Rossi empire."
"Which means he's more attached to her than we initially calculated," Carmen observed. "If he's willing to give up everything for her, imagine what he'd be willing to do to protect her."
"Or what he'd be willing to give us to get her back," Marco added with satisfaction. "Suddenly our little waitress has become the most valuable asset in this war."
Tommy leaned forward, his scarred hands folded on the table. "So what's the play? Do we grab her immediately, or do we wait and see how the situation develops?"
"We grab her," Marco said without hesitation. "But carefully. We need to make it look like random violence, not targeted kidnapping. If Ethan suspects we have her, he'll come at us with everything the Rossi family can muster. But if he thinks she's just... missing... he'll be desperate enough to make mistakes."
"What about the brother?" Carmen asked. "Our intel suggests he's still at the Rossi mansion, under family protection."
"The brother stays where he is for now," Marco decided. "One hostage is manageable. Two hostages, especially one who requires special medical care, becomes a logistics nightmare. Besides, knowing her brother is safe might make the girl more cooperative."
Vincent pulled out his phone and scrolled through several screens. "My people have been tracking their movements since they left the mansion. They're staying in some kind of safe house in the hills, off-grid location, minimal security, probably Ethan's attempt to keep her hidden while he figures out his next move."
"Perfect," Marco said. "Isolated location means no witnesses, no complications. We can make her disappear without anyone knowing what happened to her."
"And then?" Tommy asked.
"And then we use her to destroy Ethan Rossi piece by piece," Marco replied with cold satisfaction. "We use her to force him into impossible choices, to make him compromise everything he believes in. We use her to turn him against his own family, though it sounds like he's already done most of that work for us."
Carmen nodded approvingly. "It's elegant, I'll give you that. Use his love against him, make his strength become his weakness. But what if he doesn't break? What if he finds some way to rescue her?"
"Then we kill her and make sure he knows it was his fault," Marco said with chilling casualness. "Either way, Ethan Rossi ceases to be a threat to our interests. Either he becomes our puppet, dancing to whatever tune we play, or he becomes a broken man consumed by guilt and grief."
The men around the table nodded in agreement, their faces reflecting the cold calculation that had made them successful in their brutal profession. To them, Sophia wasn't a person with hopes and fears and people who loved her, she was simply a tool to be used against their enemy.
"When do we move?" Vincent asked.
"Tomorrow night," Marco decided. "Give them one day to settle in, to let their guard down. Then we take her, and the real war begins."
As the meeting broke up and the various family representatives prepared to leave, none of them seemed troubled by the fact that they were planning to destroy an innocent woman's life to settle a business dispute. In their world, collateral damage was simply the cost of doing business, and love was indeed the ultimate weakness.
What they didn't know was that Ethan Rossi had spent his entire life learning to be ruthless, and that losing everything he cared about might not make him weak, it might make him the most dangerous man any of them had ever faced.
But they would learn that lesson soon enough.
For now, they had their plan, their target, and their opportunity. Sophia Martin Rossi had become the center of a war she didn't even know was being fought, and her peaceful new life with Ethan was about to be shattered by forces she couldn't possibly understand.
The game was about to begin, and she was the prize that would determine who won and who lost everything.
